Honeycomb to require dual-core processor?

Rumor

According to a report filed by PCMag today, Google’s soon-to-be-released, tablet-optimized Android iteration –Honeycomb — will require some serious processing power. The blog cites the managing director of Korea’s Enspert consumer electronics firm, Bobby Cha, and writes that, “Google’s new [...] tablet OS will require a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor to run properly.” Mr. Cha went on to note that Honeycomb may also require 1,280 x 720 screen resolution, but should run on tablets with displays measuring at least 7-inches on the diagonal. Presumably, single-core Android tablets already in the market (e.g. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab) would be unable to run the tablet-centric offering. Mr. Cha, who admitted his company is currently working on Froyo, Gingerbread, as well as Honeycomb devices, states that Honeycomb will be shipped to manufacturers “towards the end of January.”

No problem there. ALL Android Tablets (as opposed to the crap from Apple) will have Xeon processors, and from what I have seen 12 cores and yet a battery that will last upwards of 6 months on a single charge all while running upwards of 200,000 applications at the same time! So this shouldn’t be an issue.

        Troll?

I guess this means I’m going to have to get at least 6 new DROID this year if I want 3.0 and thus apps that work. God, this is great news. I love having all of this CHOICE to get a phone every month in order to have timely updates and apps that work. DROID DOES!!!!

  • Mgl323

If this is true, there’s goes every single 2009-2010 Android device in the market that won’t be getting the update.

I guarantee you that Google will get EVERYONE a free upgrade provided of course they are members of the Goofan (aka Apple Hater) movement. Only thing to do is register as a Goofan (aka Apple Hater) on our site, agree to provide Google ALL your personal information and buying/general habits and you’re all set! Go to: thegoofans.org! It may be down due to the tremendous amount of traffic so be patient. Our goal is to sign up 4-5 billion people by June.

        Goofan,

You just need a gmail account for Google to start acquiring all of your personal information and selling its to advertisements agencies. Come on now, you know better!

who’s going to believe that ish? they just released the Nexus S which is supossed to be the Android developers phone and dual core processor is nowhere

  • guest

Honeycomb’s big yeah yeah yeah, it aint small no no no

  • Guest

Maybe not the best idea for the near future.

We look at Android tablet sales/interest and we don’t see much in terms of growth. Making a move like this would definitely require components to become much cheaper, thus allowing manufacturers to sell tablets at a lower price, conclusively creating more sales/bolstering interest in the products.

Right now, 600/500 for the Galaxy Tablet is way too high for most average consumers to consider purchasing for themselves. Tossing in a powerful dual core processor would likely either A) Drive the prices up or B) Keep the prices around the same.

LOL, I guess it’s nothing I should worry about, my Epic will just be getting Froyo by then.

The “shipped to OEM” date for Android builds is basically meaningless. Android shipped 2.2 over the summer and 2.3 last month, yet Samsung continues to ship Galaxy S phones with 2.1, even though the Galaxy was released after 2.2 was shipped.

  • Norm

I really wish Samsung would stop adding to the FRAGMENTATION of the DROID line up. They are giving entirely too much credibility to that argument.

Hm, sounds like honeycomb is going the way of bloat. I thought Google was into optimizing and not bloating. I own no iPad, but when I played w/ it, I was amazed by how fast and lag-free it was. Objectively, the iPad is very impressive. This is from a guy who had no interest in it before.

    • Hipster

      LOL…

      Fucking dumb ass Apple fanboys…

    • KCRic

Lag free? I played that stupid labyrinth game or what ever it’s called and it lagged just loading it. Everything lags a bit because of load times with the read/write cycles so stop with the ‘no lag’ bs.

  • Nerban

Just like you needed a 1ghz processor to run froyo. I’ll believe it when I see it

    • Nerban

      Edit- gingerbread

  • http://twitter.com/D4mi4n1988 Damian Wozniak

So this means no 3.0 for nexus s

  • Bringit

whaaaaa whaaaaa whaaa BGR blow you ONLY post about big bro Apple and the iPhone whaaaaa whaaaaa whaaa I will never post here again you should change the name from BGR to ONLY APPLE whaaaaa whaaaaa whaaa.

    Oh wait.

This is another post about an Android phone.

Whatever. I’ll come back when there is something on Apple to bitch about

I wish they Google would add a minimum specs requirement to its cell phones as well. This would help with the problem of some apps not being to run well on some cell phones. I would also love it if they would make a rule to have manufacturers NOT add their UIs to Android, but i think that would be pushing it a bit.

  • http://twitter.com/wilsont08 WT

As much as Google wants Android to be open, there’s gotta be some sort of restriction in hardware. The lack of GPU acceleration on Andriod’s UI is holding the OS back. I don’t really see how successful low end smartphones are, most phones are sold under contract. I really don’t see anyone whose going to spend more than 2 years with the same phone picking one that’s free vs one that cost $100 under contract.

Just to rephrase it, why do low end/low budget smartphones exist? If someone is willing to pay an extra $20-30 a month for a data plan, I just don’t see that person willing to settle for a low end smartphone. Some of these low end phones cost as much as $300-350, and a mid-range/high end cost just a little bit more full retail. Not sure who they’re trying to get over, you know?

Minimum specs should be mandated, there’s really no reason to produce a low end smarthphone if its just going to cost a wee bit less especially when you’re most likely adding a relatively significant fee to your monthly bill.

  • MH

I don’t buy it. Nexus S just came out. I don’t think google would basically make their flagship phone obsolete in, what, 3/4 months?
    But what do I know..

  • Anonymous

Wheres that Tim guy with the Evo? He’s going to shit an industrial farm when he finds out his non duo core Evo just became OS obsolete. So much for sugaring the Google punch with honey.

  • Stationstops

I’m guessing a sub-1 hr battery life will be among the requirements as well.

  • http://twitter.com/bravadomizzou Raymond Holland

they should make it so that their OS is scalable to work on any screen size, resolution, or processor.

    • Anonymous

Something that scalable causes an awful lot of bloat and hurts performance. I prefer the more tailored approach, it’s one of the main reasons apple software works so efficiently.
