Rumor: specifications for HTC’s Thunderbolt 4G emerge

Rumor

We usually aren’t inclined to include the word “rumor” in article titles, but once you read on, we think you’ll understand why it’s there. German blog HTCInside has published a saucy specification list for what is presumed to be HTC’s first LTE device: the Thunderbolt 4G (formerly known as the Incredible HD). The list of specifications reads like a mobile enthusiast’s wish list, and includes: 4.3-inch screen, 1.2GHz Snapdragon dual-core processor, 8 megapixel rear-facing camera with dual-LED flash, 5 megapixel front-facing camera, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth, GPS, aGPS, 16GB of internal storage, micro-SD card slot (compatible up to 128GB), 1800mAh battery, and Android 2.3. The purported innards also include a “quad-band, UMTS, LTE, HSDPA, HSUPA” radio — meaning this is not the CDMA/LTE set that would be heading to Verizon, but rather a European GSM version. Oh, and the 1.2 jiggawatt Snapdragon processor the spec sheet lists, model MSM8960? It was just announced last month. Again, this one is hovering around an 8.0 on the rumor Richter Scale, so please use these specs with caution.

Seeing how the spec lists Android 2.3, this leads even more credit that my source was telling the truth, that HTC did in fact have Gingerbread when it claimed and was ready to have it possibly launch before christmas.

Since pasted links don’t let posts go through, to check it out type www dot techhog dot com and search “Evo Gingerbread” for my story. There is also a follow up as to why the 2.3 update was delayed for the EVO.

I believe my “source (HTC Employee)” was telling the truth.

Dual 1.2GHz Scorpion is likely to be MSM8x60. (8260 for UMTS, 8660 for CDMA)
These chipsets software are planned to be commericial by end of Jan 2011. But to support LTE,
with MSM8x60 + MDM9x00 chpiset combinations, Qualcomm software will be commercial by Apr’11(VZW) and Jun ’11(AT&T) respecively. However, MSM8960 is planned to be commercial by Q4’11.

It is just a placeholder in a warehousing system. Nothing official and the specs are guessed. All ist says is that the Thunderbolt might become available in Germany one day.

Other than the processor, the only thing that’s really unbelievable in that spec list is the front-facing 5mpx camera.

IF this phone is blessed with dual core, the only one that is ready, and has been in HTC’s labs for months is the snapdragon MSM8660 dual core set. Has a maximum clock of 1.2ghz, so if it is used in the thunderbolt, it would prob be clocked at 1ghz for best battery life. I wish!! Supposedly the other three phones from LG, Samsung, and Moto all have dual core on-board, so HTC would be stupid to not include the 8660, when it has been ready for prime time for some time now.
