Skype 3.0 brings video calling over 3G, Wi-Fi to iOS devices

Software

Today, VoIP chat and calling provider Skype announced a new version of its iOS client simply titled Skype 3.0. The new code brings several, small improvements and, most notably, adds the ability to make and receive video-calls from your supported iOS device over both 3G and Wi-Fi networks. As the press release reads:

Skype video calling is supported over WiFi and 3G* data connections. You can enjoy video calls with users on all Skype desktop versions and with other Skype for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users.

You can make video calls in both portrait and landscape mode and use both front and back cameras.

Users on iPhone 4, 3GS and iPod Touch (4th Generation) can enjoy full 2-way video calling. Users with iPod Touch (3rd Generation) and iPads can receive video.

Video calling with Skype requires iOS 4.0 or above to be installed on your device. Skype 3.0 for iPhone will also work on iOs 3.x, but without video support.

The new bits are waiting to be downloaded via iTunes or the App Store on your iOS device. Enjoy!

How much data does it use ? Is there a way to see a MB/minute rate for this on 3G ?

Im pretty sure ATT has that data tracking app last time I heard

uses approximately three megabytes of data a minute and could quite easily destroy your phone bill if you’re not careful.

    LOL at At&t’s 2GB cap.

yup that is pretty shitty… since anyone that uses their smartphone to it’s potential will blow that 2GB out of the water….. I do 2 – 3+GB every month over 3G on my EVO

That is my big problem. For a casual, typical user who checks facebook and listens one hour of pandora a week it works….but if you use it for GPS, your no.1 online music streaming device, surfing the web, and communicating via IM, email or calling then At&t doesn’t cut it. I’m not always by a wifi hotspot and for only 5 dollars less than Verizon a month for data why would I limit myself to 2GB and lackluster coverage?

I’m assuming Skype did the simulated screen artwork and not Apple. They made it look very awkward and uncomfortable to use the product. Definitely not Apple marketing material.

Love the fat bezel of the iphone 4. Android phones are too narrow.

I still don’t get the obsession with video calling. Who even calls people anymore? Most people just text. Maybe video calling will get people back to actually making phone calls, who knows. I can see it working for those in long distance relationships though. But for me, I barely want to hear what people have to say over the phone let alone see them…

Sign language users uses video calling 24/7/365.

American Sign Language is the 4th most taught language in colleges and Universities and its the 3rd most used language in the United States.

Interesting that Apple doesn’t find this a threat to their FaceTime service. Usually anything even borderline is rejected… I wonder how they let this one go.

That being said, it is a nice addition for iPhone users, so that video calling can expand past only other iOS devices.

I am happy Skype is giving us full landscape mode goodness. Well overdue

How is the iPhone 3GS going to be able to have 2 way video calling?

Video calling does NOT mean you have to look at each other, you can be just showing others the location or maybe some products. I used Tango when I went shopping on my iPhone, so I make sure it’s the right color or style. It’s very useful for shopping. I used at Coach store, Wal mart, and Abercrombie & Fitch, it saved me from going back to return and exchange after holiday. :D
