Sears announces Alphaline Entertainment online movie streaming service

General

Retail giant Sears isn’t the first company that comes to mind when you think about digital movie downloads, but a newly launched offering aims to change that. The company has announced Alphaline Entertainment, a digital movie rental and download service that runs on the RoxioNow platform. First rumored back in July, Alphaline will offer users 24-hour movie rentals for between $3 and $4 or movie purchases for between $10 and $20. Movies can be viewed on a PC or on any RoxioNow capable device (e.g. Xbox 360). In the future, Sears hopes to support viewing on Macintosh computers, mobile devices, and network connected TVs. What do you think? Does Sears stand a chance against Amazon, Netflix, and the like?

“What do you think? Does Sears stand a chance against Amazon, Netflix, and the like?”

I had to read that a few times to make sure I read that correct. Are we all aware that Apple holds greater than 80% market share on digital media in the US and 65%+ worldwide? We all know this correct because it is indeed fact.

Funny none the less. Good luck sears. Instead of $0.99 rentals you can do “Bluelight” rentals. Since I am going to charge you a buck for each stream it looks like a losing venture from start to finish.

Not at the prices listed. I’m not willing to pay 3 to 4 dollars to rent a movie when I can get it from Netflix or Redbox for much less (and I don’t use Redbox). A digital copy for the price of a physical DVD? Absurd. But I know P.T. Barnum was right. I’ve never heard of Alphaline. I don’t see it.

Does anyone know if there is any reason why this online streaming from sears would or wouldn’t be possible for viewers in Europe? Anything to do with the NTSC or PAL systems or anythink like that?
I appreciate your feedback. Thank you in advance. Peter

Another lost venture by a fading retail giant.

exactly – then why the hell are they doing it in the first place?
unless they are offering something that is extremely different from what is already out there – this will fail

Is this a joke? Sears is for Tires and Tools. Time to short some stock…

Just closed down. The reason nobody noticed was probably because nobody was using it. Just guessing.
