DigiTimes: iPad shipments to reach 65 million units in 2011

Tablets

According to hit or miss industry watcher DigiTimes, Apple is betting big on the iPad in 2011. The site estimates that iPad manufacturers will ship 65 million units for Apple in 2011, a figure that is almost double the market consensus. According to the report, which is based on checks within various display manufacturers, iPad panel builders will be quite busy next year. LG Display will reportedly receive orders for 35 million iPad displays over the course of 2011, while Samsung Electronics and Chimei Innolux will each build 15 million panels. While DigiTimes has a number of accurate forecasts to its credit over the years, we definitely don’t see this report ending up in its win column.

I was wrong, i can admit that. What was I wrong about? Well I suggested that out of the 45-60 million tablets to ship in 2011 the iPad would account for 35-50 million. Clearly Apple believes that every tablet sold next year will be an iPad.

Or conversely, the market may be over 500,000,000 and Apple get 10% of the market and google get 90%! And google may be 100% of tablets and phones in 2012 which would be awesome!

I wouldn’t be surprised if 95% of tablets sold in 2011 are by Apple.

I still can’t see the value proposition of a tablet. I have a laptop and smartphone. Considering most prospects for a tablet own a laptop and/or smartphone as well it baffles me why the expected allotment of ipads in 2011 is 65M.

If that is true, Apple is betting that everyone who bought the 10″ iPod Touch (aka iPad v1) will buy iPad v2. That is what they get a large percentage of iPhone customers to do every year. I think Apple is going to find that the iPad customer base isn’t going to be as gullable.

In order to come close to those numbers, Apple is going to need to build an iPad that works on carriers other then AT&T (i.e. Sprint, Verizon, TMO, etc) and v2 better have at least some of the things that v1 was lacking (front/rear camera, USB, HDMI out, etc).

They make a wifi version that works on every carrier via their iteration of a mifi. The mindset of people like you that it needs to be locked to a carrier is perhaps the biggest inhibition.

The Apple Customer Base is As gullable As it gets, no offense. I myself have an ipad for lack of a mightier alternative. Now with the htc/google tablet coming, i will not buy another iPad. As long as there will be a pure google tablet with no shitty mods from htc etc, this is the one i will get. So im thinking of course almost every apple customer who owns an iPad and likes it, will buy the iPad 2. Sounds crazy, but hey, it’s apple. Its working so far.

This is possible if they have found a way to greatly reduce the price. Otherwise this is a stretch.

Wow, 65 million is 1 in 100 people planet-wide! And if you figure only half are First World’ers then that means 1 in 50 of us will have one. That’s pretty amazing for a device intentionally hobbled Apple-style.
