PlayStation phone due in Spring of 2011?

General

A report filed today claims that Sony Ericsson’s PlayStation phone is set to launch in “spring of 2011″ — the article was published in the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun. The publication goes on to state that the device will be “based on the PSPgo” and will “retain the PSP’s familiar gaming controls” — all of the leaked images and videos we’ve seen seem to confirm this as well. Sony has yet to comment on the previously aforementioned images and videos and declined to comment on Asahi Shimbun‘s report. “We do not comment on rumor or speculation,” noted a Sony spokeswoman. The PS phone, which will be powered by Android, is rumored to boast a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, microSD slot, and a special Sony Marketplace portal. Not to rain on Sony Ericsson’s parade, but a 1GHz processor in an Android handset might start to look pretty pedestrian after the Consumer Electronics Show next week and Mobile World Congress in February.

Exactly how many adults will buy this? I mean its one thing to create a dedicated device for the PS, but its another to integrate it into a smartphone with data plans etc. No parent is going to buy this for their child. What is the market for this exactly? Adults? Perhaps the living in the basement anime set, which is small. But mass market or even not quite mass market? This thing is DOA.

There’s a reason the Gaming Demographic most coveted is 18-35 Males. I think this will sell pretty well just because of that. I’m not big on Mobile gaming but a lot of people I know are… #justsaying

I can’t imagine college educated, career minded people would be caught dead with this phone, whether they are 25 or 35. Most people in their 30′s are career minded, ladder climbers that wouldn’t be caught dead bringing this phone out in front of a client. In married households, women typically control the bank account and this phone would not appeal to many women at all. If the holder of the bank account won’t approve, I’m unsure how this phone would gain the scale to be affordable or even profitable.

Women are the holders of the bank account lol? Either you are a woman or you watch too much CNN Specials my friend.

I’ts a perfectly fine phone… Theres no need to whip out the keyboard at all since all it’s used for is gaming. It’s esentially a slate device with the keyboard serving a specific issue. If anyone is worried about how their phone would be perceived by their peers are definitely in the wrong field.

I’m afraid you’re terribly incorrect in your assumptions.

-It was a 10.5 billion dollar industry in the US in 200
-67% of American households partake in video game playing
-The average game player is 34 years old
-The average age of the one making the most frequent purchases is 40
-40% of all gamers are women
-Women over 18 years old represent a greater portion of this overall population than boys under 17
-26% of Americans over 50 play video games
-42% of heads of households play games on a wireless device, such as a cell phone – up from 22% in 2002
-64% of parents believe video games are a positive part in their children’s lives
-While 95% of women are involved in making financial decisions, only 25% act as the primary decision-maker and 60% rely on advice from others

And yes… most people in their 30s, like myself, are career minded… and we all grew up with video games. And as the evidence suggests, a vast majority continued the hobby.

that would be a 10.5 billion dollar industry in the US in 2009.. which is also more than Hollywood made in the US AND Canada.

Tee, if I’m sitting across from you asking about why you operating margins are deteriorating while your net cash after operations improved and you whip out a PS phone, you will have lost all credibility to me. Sorry. In the world of finance where I operate, if you whip one of these out it will make me think you are still a child and can’t be relied upon for answers that require some depth and adult thought.

kentadams – if my employer chooses to provide me with a PlayStation phone for my enterprise device, then perhaps you’re doing business with the wrong company instead of the wrong individual. What I carry for a personal device has no bearing on my business acumen. And a company providing such a phone, which would be counter-productive to completing business tasks… well, that’s just stupid.

Tee, you just made my point.

      • Tee

Not really… it’d likely be taken in, like a BlackBerry, and stripped of all items that would make it a unique device… thus negating the entire point of even getting that phone – which would likely show poor purchasing priorities and a wasteful company. I also work in finance, and while I’m not involved in any IT decisions, I am aware that they are currently researching both iPhone and Android devices to replace BB… and tablet devices as well, with iPad in the forefront for obvious reasons, currently. Both devices can be identified as gaming devices… iPhone moreso than Android due to what’s truly available on the markets… but they are looked at as anything but. Far more functional than a BlackBerry, which is really just an email phone… and both provide a wow factor in presentation that blackberry can only dream of.

Tee, yes you did. You made my point which was that you would seem like a joke if you whipped this out in a meeting, regardless of what your company chose to purchase. The question remains, what is the audience that will scale this device? I don’t see it.

Lol- Such an oversimplification, what kind of life do you have? Sad.

This will more than likely be GSM so they can always switch the sim card out to their previous phone or play games with get this no sim card in it. And when its closed it looks like any other Android phone. Ans I doubt people would be embarrassed about playing games on their phone, that’s one of WP7 and iPhone’s main selling points…

    • Dale

      Kent,

I agree with your sentiments heartily ! Just what we need…another toy for the immature 18-35 demographic.

How are calls made on this ???

      A true “dumbphone” !!!

    • Sefiroh

You are quite funny. I see alot of CEO’s and business owners who don’t know shit about how to run a business and they have a BB. Stop living in some ancient time. The gaming industry is huge. Just because YOU judge books by their covers, it does not mean everyone else does. COD: Black Ops just set a new world record for success. I am sure all the people who pushed it over the 1 billion dollar mark in a little more than a month, live in the basement and watch cartoons.

    • xgarryx

with psp2 coming in months, and gamers going to that ,who is this for?

“Exactly how many Adults will buy this?” I dont think this is targeted for just adults.. How many 12 to 18 year olds have PSP’s, DS’s, and a cellphone? Lots… How many Adults have candy bar Android phones and a handheld gaming system? Lots again. In your opinion it’s lame, it’s lame in mine too, but we aren’t in the target demo. This thing will sell huge.. No it’s not going to outsell the iPhone, Galaxy S, or Optimus line but it’s not supposed to

  • Donny

I think everyone by now knows better than to buy Samsung or Sony…unless its a TV.

    • Anonymous

Lol I actually agree with that…. first time i saw a Samsung Laptop… I was like W T F? shit just seemed awkward. But Sammy isn’t too bad with the phones… TouchWiz is “ok” and the phones are decent enough… I just think they care less about the end user and more about Making as much sales as possible… Hence the reason the TAB is out and Galaxy phones can’t seem to get 2.2

Sony…? well shit… they keep shooting themselves in the leg…. Like Launching a phone with 1.6 in 2010

  • ItsMeBeaches

This phone is a gamers dream…now the real question is “how will Sony screw this one up?”

  • Anonymous

Is this the new nokia engage?

  • Silly Rabbit Trix are for Kids

I already have a phone like this………it’s called the EVO and it looks good in a Business meeting too.

    • Norm

If you are on Sprint you are likely not in a business meeting….maybe if you are the owner of a couple Popeyes Chicken stores, but that is about it.

      • Jon

I’ve never been to a business meeting where we showed off our cell phone carriers, nor did we chastise one another for choosing one provider over another.

And owning a couple of Popeyes Chickens would be awesome. Money + Fried Chicken = Win

Get over yourself, Norm. And don’t be a cell carrier snob… it’s fuckin’ goofy.

If sony wants to move this device they better market it to kids, teens and parents I dont picture a 20+ year old getting this phone.

  • http://twitter.com/MikeIsCore Mike Schreiner

I want it simply for the fact that my company requires me to travel to Afghanistan a few times a year, and at least with this phone i’d be able to play some games and watch some movies on the flight over to Afghansitan, and enjoy the same games and movies while i’m there since i wouldnt pay for the overly priced plans. I wouldn’t need to carry additional devices or rely on the shoddy DVD player in my company provided laptop. For me it’s a win win and for Kent’s business acumen I wouldn’t pull out this phone I would pull out the company provided BlackBerry.

I think it needs a faster processor and more RAM to compete though.

There is no way this thing is going to sell, or I should say sell signifcantly. I don’t know what Sony is thinking releasing a Playstation Phone but that is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. They should do what Samsung did and release a regular touch screen phone that has a portal for PS3 gaming where you can play games on it. Something like that. Basically an Android or Windows powered phone where maybe they contract with top of the line game makers for exclusive games that people who play video games would be interested in. No one is going to but a Playstation phone (especially if its called a playstation phone). Sony really screwed up on this one.

maybe the newspaper used the same internet sources as everyone else so there is no reason to make a post about the same fucking thing, NO NEW INFO == NO STORY!!!
