Android Market now home to over 200,000 apps according to report

mobile

According to independent Android app tracker AndroLib.com, Google’s Android Market is now home to over 200,000 apps. The site also reports that the Market’s apps have been collectively downloaded over 2.5 billion times. The news should hardly come as a surprise, of course, as developers are becoming increasingly focused on Android, which is poised to become the most popular smartphone platform in the U.S. early next year. Android’s global market share is skyrocketing as well, having gained a whopping 22% of the world’s smartphone market between the third quarters of 2009 and 2010 alone.

This is bogus considering we just went over 100K a few months ago.

    • Norm

It’s not bogus. DROID DOES apps. For example, I just did a quick search for “Lil Wayne” in the App store and got 38 results for ringtones….ERRRR I mean Apps. You see, we DROID users are a highly educated group that loves the cultural and intellectual prowess of artists like Lil Wayne so make plenty of these great ringto….I mean apps. DROID is open and DOES!

      • Norm

I should note that I did that search in via the DROID market running 2.2. If you are running one of the many other great versions of DROID OS like 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, or 2.1 you might not see all 38. But who cares, its all about choice! DROID DOES!

      • Don

Omg, this annoys me sooo much. IT ISN’T DROID OS. IT’S ANDROID. A-N-D-R-O-I-D.

      • kyle

@Don don’t feed this troll, he’s obviously the owner of a magical iOS device.

Cry fragmentation all you want. Whine about having 38 choices for a single search. Pout about openness, and the ability to use the phone as a tool that directly fits your OWN agenda (and not steve jobs’ ). Bitch about the fact that nobody holds your hand while selecting apps, and slaps it for creating one that they don’t like.

All I’m wondering is this: When the day comes that android casts such an enormous shadow over iOS that developers stop caring about the platform, will you still STILL sit there and sip that Kool Aid? Or will you grow a pair and realize that Android’s unmatched growth in the past year alone might be a bit more than coincidence?

      • Norm

        Kyle,

I have a DROID X. Search for yourself. How could I make up the fact that 38 pointless apps come up from just searching ‘Lil Wayne’. Don’t be a fucking retard fanboy. I am clearly mocking people like YOU with my pro DROID talk. However being an owner of an Android device I actually know what I am talking about unlike your ‘never reached puberty” 17 year old dumbass.

      • Hate, Y U No Love?

Norm… no need to explain… let them be trolled.

  • Scott

Their numbers are known to be a little off (as in when they said Android has 100,000 when it really had 70k), but any who, this does show that they’re at least close to 200k. And what does that mean? Well, It means when I get my Olympus next month, it will be that much easier to switch from iPhone!

  • mike the tiger

Android is doing whatever they can to stay up with apple, android users think there so much more superior than iphone users, half of androids apps are garbage, plus apple is making so much more money off of the iphone when theres only 3 models and on one carrier while android operating systems are being ran on at least a gazillion different phones and there still getting left when it comes to profit…. android fanboys, go ahead and defend your ugly phone with cheap software

    • http://twitter.com/ChazClout ChazClout

One carrier? What about the rest of the world?

    • Mike

um…last i checked half (probably more) of the Apple App Store is garbage as well… Just curious, if I’m wrong, I’m guessing you’re just livid that you can’t install those 150,000 gems on your iPhone aren’t you?

It’s not about total numbers, it’s about the core apps. On that front, the two platforms are equal. Android may lack some of iOS’s polish, but it has, after all, only been on the mainstream market for only about two years. Besides, what it lacks in polish, it makes up for in choice, innovation, and power.

      • Yeah Right

Excuse me if I am wrong but I thought our beloved Android Market was out 3-4 months after the app store back in 2008. Do your research! We always are talking about Apple has 200K plus more apps than Android because it has been out so much longer but come on…..3-4 months! Apple really was given a big head start from the open market.

Also it is pretty known that the jerks that carries iPhones get the core/better apps way before Android. Let’s face it the OS battle is a personal choice but iOS has a way better app selection, experience, total and whatever else you want to call it.

You idiots on the home team make me want to leave Android and go over to iOS because your facts are constantly wrong to make Android sound better.

If you want to argue that in Fall of 2008 when the G1 came out it was the only one to represent for the marketplace, well welcome to Apple’s world.

Android at most has 150K apps in my opinion and by us continuing to tell lies we are degrading Android.

    • GinaDee

There are many garbage apps for iOS. How many fart apps do you really need seriously to pump up the amount of applications your OS can brag about?

Yes Android has their share of junk apps too

My Android is neither cheap nor ugly. How did you come to your conclusion with so many Android phones out there? I bet you are just speaking out of your @ss and don’t even use a current Android device?

      Nice try. Seriously Mike.

  • Anonymous

what is android killer apps. if its this many why dont they advertise this stuff on tv instead of there google apps. is it quantity over quality

    • Norm

you successfully made absolutely no sense. go back to school now.

      • Mgl323

You forgot DROID DOES in your comment.

  • Anonymous

Honest question. Do they count the “Lite” version and the full version as two apps? Wouldn’t that skew the numbers a little bit. (Same applies to iOS.) Also there are all kinds of apps that are infringing on existing copyrights. All those Simpson or Family Guy Findit.. all those wallpaper and ringtone apps (Example, there are like 10+ Lady Gaga ringtone apps alone) plenty of Movie Soundboard apps. It’s like the early days of music downloading. It’s fun while it lasts. :)

    • Anonymous

      i was just think that.

  • Apple sucks

Not surprising, Android is above and beyond Apple’s overpriced and crippled OS.

    • Michael Scrip

      How is iOS overpriced?

If you’re talking about hardware… you can get the LG Vortex for free right now at Verizon. 600 MHz… 320×480 screen… it’s a beast.

And most importantly to you… it runs Android.

      • Anonymous

600 MHz… 320×480 screen are you serious, and on top of that your stuck with it for 2 years.

  • Donny

That is a lot of garbage apps. How many are color themes, soundboards and wallpaper apps?

    • Guest

Ahh, that’s the new angle. Before when iphone held the lead with the most apps, it was an argument of numbers. Now that the gap is closing, apple fans are changing their tune to “well, uh, they are just garbage apps.” Please, go through the iphone store and count the fart apps they have there. I think it’s time to accept reality that the iphone isn’t the hottest gadget anymore.

    • Hate, Y U No Love?

Yeah… b-b-b-ut that’s what makes Android superior… the ability to customize! Right?

Which is really just changing icons, font and a background picture.

      • KCRic

Wait – so you mean the iPhone can do more? It can be overclocked, have a larger VM, run a different os, do more than just act as a level when mounting a tv or show you which way is north when you’re trying to pretend you’re rambo? imTrapt stuff is locked down, even after jail breaking because the two giants want it that way, hell, they even catch on fire and god knows they don’t have the fastest processor out there. If any dev wanted to they could port iOS to an android phone – we already have windows and ubuntu – what about that iPhone?

I don’t hate it, it’s a niche so good for whomever is in it but don’t spout crap about how it superior – especially when it comes to some one who actually knows a thing or two about technology. It’s a kids toy, for technologically ignorant people and middle aged adults trying to be cool, nothing more. Each OS has it’s crutch so it’s pointless to just make shit up in order to seem better.

This is great! I should go download Netflix right now….

    • Norm

Hey ass! Since like most DROID users I get most of my tech knowledge from blogs and message boards I went right to the DROID market to get the NetFlix app and it wasn’t there. WTF IS THIS? DROID DOES. Netflix must be owned by Steve Jobs. I will be canceling my subscription shortly.

      • GinaDee

Netflix is coming to Android Q1 of 2011. Your prayers will be answered.

  • Don

They are forgetting the fact that many apps on the Android Market are completely shit. Even though Apples restrictions on the App Store tick me off sometimes. They have a lot more quality apps.

    • GinaDee

How many apps do you really need on your phone Don? Do you download all 300k apps? Most people just use a handful of apps that work for them. No more no less. The junk apps get deleted or uninstalled.

      • Monique

        exactly

  • Monique

seriously, you guys are debating which apps are better on what platform? geez, you guys need to get a life already. More choices for consumers, the better. Why does everything have to turn in to, ‘Mine is bigger and better than yours’ type thing. 100,000 apps, 200,000 apps, 500,000 apps doesn’t matter. You will most likely only be using 5-10 apps on a regular basis anyway. Just be happy that you have options.

    • Hate, Y U No Love?

Then *ahem* why does BGR make a blog about every ‘milestone’ number hit?

Don’t blame the addicts, blame the dealer.

  • EP_bgr

    200K? pffff… Microsoft Market has 5,000 apps! … oh wait….

    • Bullyboyb

I have owned a WP7 device for over 2 months now after i sold my Iphone (the novelty wore off after 1 month) and i am loving the xboxlive intergration, zune subscription service, office hub, facebook intergration e.t.c .Apps are few but I am struggling to find any other app i would need. Not the best OS i know but hey……. it works brilliantly for me, never going back to IOS. Just waiting for the BB playbook to pair with my second phone which is a BB bold. Personally ios, android, bb and wp7 are all great operating systems depending on your needs.

Moral of the story is what works for you doesn’t work for everyone …concentrate on you own choices and let others make their own choices.
My android device is sitting somwhere on my desk.

    • Hate, Y U No Love?

      Let’s see…

      200,000 apps, no Netflix.

      WP7… Netflix from day one.

Like the previous posts… its about WHAT is available, not how many.

  • Anonymous

I wonder if its true that 80% are just plain Spam Lmao. My recent experience with the find my Droid app yielded, no remote wipe, no remote lock or lock change, no remote alerts. Not to mention in order for the app to work you must leave GPS on, what kind of shit is that. Where are the killer apps at? Cause they’re no where to be found on the Android maket lol.

  • http://twitter.com/j_nathaniel Jason

Ok, 200,000+ applications…only 1,000 of which are useful. Impressive?

    • Guest

Sounds like the iphone, what’s your point?

    • Anonymous

There’s got to be about 30 thousand that are just wallpapers, lil Wayne has about 50 and ringtones are endless.

  • CpAnders

60% of the 200000 apps are shit like “Borat soundboards” or some crappy live wallpaper that someone did in two hours, making no effort in doing something substantial, just producing crap. I’m an android user so don’t pull that fanboy crap.

  • Michael Scrip

That’s true. But Apple has since moved on to 960×640 screens… and only kept the last year’s 3GS to be their budget model. Apple’s never gonna go back to using the lower screen resolution.

However, LG created the Vortex this year as a brand new phone for 2010.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Johan-Ekblom/100000533781474 Johan Ekblom

Windows Phone KIN and Wp7 is the year’s flops. They sell so bad that Microsoft refuses to show sales figures …

    Microsoft is desperate!!!

Show us the real numbers MS

    R.I.P == Wp7
