State University of New York moves to Microsoft Live

Business

In a short press release yesterday, Microsoft announced a deal with the State University of New York (SUNY) to bring the company’s Live@edu cloud-based collaboration services to all 64 SUNY campuses. “SUNY sought to decrease costs while providing its 465,000 students with up-to-date technology necessary for success in college and in today’s workforce,” reads the press release. “As a result, SUNY students will have access to advanced online software, including hosted e-mail, calendars, online storage, Office Web Apps, instant messaging, document sharing and videoconferencing, among other services.” SUNY estimates that the move to Microsoft’s cloud system will save the state roughly $600,000 over the next five years.

SUNY just signed a deal last year with Google Apps. Many of the SUNY schools transitioned over the summer to Google Apps. Unless MS is paying SUNY, I can’t see them migrating again so soon. I think it’s probably an option, but not a total transition. I’ve taken classes at two SUNY schools in the last year, and both of them transitioned to Google over the summer.

I didn’t go to SUNY, but, after I left my alma mater, they implemented both Google and MS platforms and gave students the option, as far as email goes.

This blog post says NY state will save $600,000 over the next five years. That seems kinda small… considering SUNY has 64 campuses and almost half a million students.

So I clicked on the article… and it says “Monroe Community College (MCC)… one of the largest colleges in the SUNY system… is projecting a savings of $600,000 over the next five years while providing more technology services to students than ever before. The move to the cloud and Live@edu has also contributed to MCC’s sustainability efforts in terms of printing, toner, paper and envelope usage reduction and postage savings.”

It sounds like each of the SUNY campuses will be saving money individually… not just $600,000 for the whole state university system…

CUNY, well at least CUNY Baruch College, already uses Windows live for its email services however, without the @live address.

Wow…this is like saying “The Greendale Community College has just switched over to MS LIVE for all of the campuses” LOL…BFD!!!

As someone who works at a college that utilizes Live@edu, it’s a complete pain in the ass for both the students and the staff. It really, really sucks.
