Sony on pace to sell 15 million PS3 consoles this year

Gaming

Microsoft’s Kinect sensor may have stolen the show this holiday season, but it looks like Sony might have the last laugh. Kazuo Hirai, head of Sony’s games division, sat down with reporters on Wednesday to talk PlayStation. Hirai confirmed that Sony’s PlayStation 3 console sales are currently in line with the company’s expectations. In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011, Sony is on track to sell 15 million PS3 game consoles — up over 15% from last year’s 13 million consoles. Sony also announced last month that it had sold 4.1 million PlayStation Move controllers in two months. Independent gaming industry monitor VGChartz indicates that Sony has sold 12.4 million PlayStation 3 consoles so far this calendar year, landing it ahead of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 (11.3 million) and behind the Nintendo Wii (15.7 million) and DS (19.2 million).

Nice, so there is a true three horse race in the gaming market now unlike years past where the playstation blew everyone away. Now if only they can get the prices lower…..

      LOL…no.

The Xbox 360 is dead everywhere but the US. Just like last gen. The only thing that has changed this gen is the millions and millions of duplicate Xbox 360s Microsoft sold due the RRoD and other hardware failure that plague the piece of crap console.

what?? wasnt the Xbox the best selling console for the last 6 months? how come it’s now the lowest seller?

I believe these are Worldwide Sales numbers, Xbox outsells the PS3 in the US but not overseas.

    Amazing sales.

Even more amazing when you consider the PS3 is the most expensive console in history and yet is the third fastest selling console in history.

The sales are going to be absolutely insane when the PS3 drops to 200 dollars next year.

And LOL BoyGenius quoting the fake fanboy sales number site vgchartz. Way to make yourselves look like fools.

If that target achieved then it’s very used full for Sony Company. If not (not good sign for consoles users)

now question for the Japanese lady, why are you not in the kitchen wearing nothing but a cooks apron and making me a sammich?

    • David

World Wide number of systems sold as of today since the systems been on sale.. KEEPING THEM HONEST..

    Wii: 46. Million

360: 43.5 Million (Kinect SOLD over 4 Million World Wide)

PS3: 37.9 Million (PS3 Move SHIPPED 4.1 Million World Wide) Shipped…. not sold. Sony put out Misleading numbers to try to one up on Microsoft on Kinect. Some websites put sold, but move of them corrected the information after contacting Sony. Sony rep stated that the number was not units sold, but in fact was units shipped.

Lets be clear. PS3 has not sold more units world wide then Xbox 360 and Wii.. PS3 MOVE is not a big money maker for Sony.

The record was set only a year ago by Apple’s iPad, but now Microsoft have stolen back the crown as their new Kinect motion controller for the Xbox 360 has become the fastest-selling device in gadget history.

Apple managed to sell 2 million iPads on the first two months after it went on sale. The Kinect figures are several leagues ahead of this with 2.5 million selling in just 25 days, an average of 100,000 units a day according to ReadWriteWeb. Indeed it makes you wonder how Microsoft can produce the device in such huge quantities to keep up with demand.

hmmm do i smell jealosy of the p3 yea yea smells like heter

    • Nokia N900

XBOX360 came out a year before the PS3 and Wii, so they have to be outselling the 360 to catch up and/or surpass it.

  • Paul

It’s all rubish’ Sony are not selling anywhere near what they say, due to the manufacture defects the do not up to, and them making a loss of over £100,000,000 in 2010, and not being able to pay there share holders.

*Sigh* more bad reporting.. these are SHIPPED units NOT sold.

  • Stillirisep

xbox has been the number one selling console here IN AMERICA, not the PS3…they should make that clear in the article.
