Motorola’s tablet to be named Xoom?

Tablets

Electronics maker Motorola has been quietly filing for patents on the name “Xoom” the world over. The Internet is not-so-quietly speculating that Xoom could be the moniker given to the company’s Android-based tablet that has already made several cameos. Moto has, thus far, filed for protections in the U.S., EU, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Taiwan. If this is in fact the name to be given to the company’s tablet, we at BGR would like to congratulate Motorola for not including the seemingly obligatory suffix “pad” anywhere in the device’s name.

What do you think of the name Xoom?

I assume you mean they are applying for Trademark protection on the name Xoom, not Patent protection, right?

it IS a bad name. I despite made up names like that. must have come from a computer or else a deranged Comcast exec. Either way, I dumped Comcast cable this year FTW!! :)

XOOM is the name of a money transfer company…. Just like moneygram… So I guess that name is already taken.

Wait so VZW is going to call it the DROID XOOM?

  • Goran1459

If they are just applying for a trademark protection this thing is not coming out any time soon. They can’t manufacture it without a name. So it sound like we’re going to hear “This is what’s coming out by the end of 2011″ at CES.

Incorrect Goran, that’s not how TM filing works.

Sounds too much like Voom, the failed HD sat service started by Cablevision.

I can not wait for this thing! Nothing more I like than new hardware with the word “Verizon” embossed on it.

This is terrible idea Motorola. We may be sick of having Pad or Tab in product names but they serve a purpose. They clearly identify the product. Sure anyone here who keeps up with this stuff will know it’s a tablet but what about the casual consumer, the non-techie crowd. We you say iPad or Galaxy Tab you can immediately surmise it is a pad or tablet. Now Xoom, I can imagine most people won’t know what that exactly is.

Motorola was genius in the Droid branding. Most non-techies I know think all Android handsets are “Droids” which means Motorola is the first thing you think about if you want an Android phone (even though the iPhone destroys Android IMHO).

Now with the tablets I don’t see people distinguishing all Android tablets as “Xooms”, do you?

DroidPad or Droid Tab as us techies hate the sound of it would immediately identify as something like a Droid which is oh by the way the BEST selling Android line ever.

Come on Motorola, don’t bite the brand that feeds you.

  • Juancromero86

Actually Droid is a trademark of Lucasfilm, licensed by Verizon Wireless. moro doesn’t have anything to do with it, as there ate Droids not made by motorola like the HTC INCREDIBLE. Get your facts straightened out before you talk nonsense.
