Amazon slashes $20 from Roku XDS price, 1080p streaming now $80

General

Both Zach and I have bought no fewer than five Roku XDS units as holiday gifts this season. So it comes as no surprise to us that Amazon has slashed $20 off of the device’s price now that our Rokus are all wrapped, mailed, and committed. The online retail giant has quietly reduced the price of the 1080p streaming media player from $99.99 down to $79.99. The Roku XDS offers full Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu Plus compatibility, as well as a host of other streaming options thanks to an online channel-store available to all users. Procrastination literally just paid you $20. The XDS is currently listed as “temporarily out of stock,” but if time is not of the essence, you can still go ahead and order yourself Roku’s high-end offering at the new, low price.

what is this? Advertise for Amazon today? First the kindle and now this? Unless this is turning into a shopping deals website, stick to your roots. Breaking technology news, leaks, something that made us come here in the first place…

Especially amusing now that the Roku is being sold on Amazon for $95, not $80. Just click the Read link for proof.

As nice as the Roku is, after i read Lifehacker’s article about turning Windows Media Center into the ultimate media center, I can save even more just using those programs on my computer

Amazon is showing the XD for 79.99 and in stock. They are showing the XDS for 95.75 and out of stock!

But it doesn’t give you access to media on your home network?

There is a “channel” in beta that provides access to your media server. The people doing it are not part of Roku. Also, I think playon supports the Roku now.

I bought one of these for my parents for Christmas. $20 would have been a nice amount to save. I really liked it when I used it for about a month. Very simple to use but I did have some netflix issues which seem to be fixed now.

I would buy one for myself but I’m not paying for Hulu Plus. Will stick with using my laptop connected to the tv.

I know the AppleTV has sold over a millions units in 3 months. I’m curious what the sales figures will be for the Roku.

Personally, I got the AppleTV because i can stream content from any Mac on my network including audio, video, and photos. It can also be easily modded to stream a multitude of file types among them .mkv at 720p.
I guess for me i wanted the ability to stream content that I owned as much as content from the net. Otherwise, I probably would have bought a Roku.
