T-Mobile introducing 21Mbps HSPA+ mobile router in March 2011

General

According to some intel gathered by blog TmoNews, the nation’s fourth largest carrier will introduce a “4G” HSPA+ mobile router in March of 2011. The router, which will be capable of speeds up to 21Mbps, will likely come in the form of a MiFi-like device. That’s about all the information there is to report at this time. We’ll hit up a few of our Magenta ninjas to see if we can scrape up any more information for you.

HOLY. CRAP. I’m sorry but I just left ‘ol Magenta for Sprint and thought I’d never look back but this…… this is WOW.

Let me put it this way, I live in a weird area of Los Angeles. Close to the hills where I get practically no service from any carrier (nothing behind my house but mountains). I’ve come to terms that I will never see 4G up here from Sprint or HSPA+ or LTE. I get it.

But this… this kinda changes everything. If I’m not mistaken, would this device allow me to plug it into my existing modem/router and get not just full coverage but HSPA+ as well??? In my house where no carrier could penetrate these thick walls??? =O

I think I may have made a huge mistake in moving to Sprint……. =/

You still need to be in an area where their 3G exists, which you said you are not so I wouldn’t worry too much.

Oh crap. So wont do anything if I only have 1 bar or less of coverage at my place. =/

I know Sprint has this router (Airave) you can buy that connects through your home internet and gives you FULL bars within 2,500 square feet. Guess I’ll have to go that route =p

Did you try LTE from Verizon? They have the 700 MhZ spectrum witch allows it to penetrate through buildings much better.

Getting a Femtocell for HSPA+ data would be the dumbest thing ever. You have a broadband connection, Use it for WiFi calling, now featured on a good amount of their Android phones and use the WiFi connection for data.

The Sprint Airave, even the new 3G Airave is garbage. Same for Verizon’s network extender. WiFi calling is a much better solution.

Am I the only one seeing the line about “Lil Wayne will enable our customers to connect a variety of Wifi devices…”??? What the hell does that mean? Is “Lil Wayne” their code name for their mifi device?

    Lil Wayne hates Trash-Mobile.

LOL!!!!!! It so funny that they’re naming the router “Lil’ Wayne” Hahahahaha!!! I was dying…

      Doesn’t he have an iPhone?

I see why he’s hating, AT&T is garbage

Lil Wayne is a codename not the actual name of the device. Try again Mike.

That is fast. very very fast. I am looking forward for that launch.

  • …..

Actually they probably sent that to the person who they suspect is leaking information. They change a few words or punctuation here and there and send it out to people they suspect of leaking and when they see their cue such as “Lil Wayne” they know who to send to the unemployment line.

i refuse to believe this is legit with that “lil wayne” line in there. there is NO WAY that can be serious. if it is, Tmobile is on the verge of an epic marketing fail.

If this is real, I could drop my TWC at home and use this.

Except that there’s a (soft) cap and your speeds get throttled down once you hit that cap. However, if you’re a light internet user, it may work for you. It’d probably be wise to see what the pricing is first though.

Not to burst any HSPA+ bubbles here or anything, But 21Mbps is theoretical ( meaning no or little competeing trafic on the network).

You’d also have to be pretty darn close to the cell site.

  • t-mo-hell

This means nothing. First 21mbs claim has to be the WORST case of false advertisment out there today. Second this is a Mi-Fi device…so u all with no service ur still screwed. Third…I think Lil Wayne is gonna b pissed he’s being referred to as someting that allows multiple partners to “connect” to you.

  • OFoSho

What is wrong with people??? So un-informed. U dont need to get a sprint airwave to get coverage. I have a MYTouch 4G and using the wifi Calling feature can make calls out in the middle of no where at my uncles house over his satellite Wifi. NO other phone can make calls up here but mine. Cellular coverage is for when your out and about. Not at your house. Lol

Andrew why do you still have a problem calling T-Mobile’s HSPA + network as 4G? Time to get over it eh?

    • Dman

Not to speak for Andrew but, HSPA+ is not 4G, granted according to the ITU there is no true 4G. Most carriers use 4G as marketing speak for fast. According to the global market the future is LTE. VZW knows this, ATT knows this and T-mo also knows this. HSPA+ is a pitstop for them on the way to LTE, while some arggue that LTE is not 4G it is the first step to LTE Advanced wich does meet the minimum download requirement of 100Mbps,
