Google Nexus One to get Gingerbread update soon

mobile

Following a misfire earlier this month, official word has finally come straight from the horse’s mouth. Using its “googlenexus” Twitter account, Google announced Monday that the Nexus One will receive an update to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) “in the coming weeks.”

The Gingerbread OTA for Nexus One will happen in the coming weeks. Just hang tight!

The update will be issued over the air, so users will not have to connect their Nexus One smartphones to PCs in order to apply the update. Once Android 2.3 begins rolling out, users will see an alert on their devices and will be walked through the update process. Google has not stated how long it will take to push Gingerbread out to all Nexus One devices, or which regions will receive the update first.

    Isn’t this phone “raw” android, no overlay?
    Why would it not be able to update day one? Is android so fragmented it can’t even release an update for android without having to make it work for that specific phone?
    I’m not bashing android, I just don’t understand why plain Jane android can’t update first day like iPhone and WP7

    • Anonymous

      In all fairness there is only one iPhone and WP7 has yet to see any updates, so how it will be handled and rolled out is still speculation.

      This is not the technology issue, it is the political issue. Google announced Nexus S as the first phone with Android 2.3 and until Nexus S gets old or whatever the deal they have made with the devil (Samsung) probably they keep OTA updates away from us Nexus One owners!

    • Paeth

      “I’m not bashing android,”

      LOL

      Fucking amateur troll.

      • Donny

        His comment was not nearly as trollish as your 15 year old language and apparent angst.

    It would be so nice to know when “soon” was.

    My Nexus S will be here before my N1 gets updated. Would be a nice to get it before Christmas Google.

  • Bringit

    In other news, Verzion will also get an iPhone. Soon.

      In realted news, Diablo 3 will be out soon.

    • Paeth

      Believe!

      Believe!

      ‘teh Verizon iPhone’ is going to save Apple from getting destroyed in sales by Google’s Android!

      Believe Hipster Douchebags! Believe!

      • Bringit

        What an idiot. Apple is doing just fine. With one phone. On one carrier.

    “The update will be issued over the air, so users will not have to connect their Nexus One smartphones to PCs in order to apply the update.”

    Translation: Since T-Mobile and other Nexus One carriers have decided they’d rather sell Nexus Twos than update Nexus Ones (which is the financially responsible thing to do), the rollout of this update will occur when they permit it. In other words, running “stock” Android doesn’t help you as much as it should when updates can only be sent over the carrier’s network.

    • Xian

      You are so wrong. It has nothing to do with carriers. The rollout of 2.3 for the Nexus One can be done over WiFi – ELIMINATING the need of a carrier.

      Even though Google has released 2.3 to AOSP it doen’t mean it’s stable. They did this so that the community can find issues and open tickets for them to get fixed. After a 2-3 week cycle many issues will be fixed and at that time it will be rolled out.

  • Scotter

    I’m guessing they didn’t want to cannibalize Nexus S sales by giving Nexus One owners a reason to hold on to our current phones that much longer.

    Nexus S (I’m thinking of it as the “Nexus 1.5″) IMHO is built for “now/yesterday” not “tomorrow (see list below)”.

    I’m waiting for the Nexus 2 or I’ll root the next phone that comes out that has (in order of importance):

    * T-mobile network compatible;
    * No physical keyboard (thin form factor);
    * Android 2.3 or 3.0 (vanilla or I will root);
    * 4.3″ to 4.5″ screen w/thin bezzle;
    * dual core cpu;
    * At least 1gig RAM, 8-16 ROM, and sd card slot;
    * 4G (HSPA+) capable;
    * Removable battery;
    * Front-facing camera;
    * Standard headphone jack;
    * HDMI-out;
    * Tiny multi-color LED for notifications (this is less important to me now since I’ve heard of NOLED app);
    * Super AMOLED or equivalent screen; and
    * Speakers on front or sides instead of back (not a deal killer)

    • Nassausky

      You read my mind.. That’s exactly what I’m looking for too.. actually 5 or 5.5″ that can just fit in most of my pockets…I might have a year to wait though for all of these to come together into one fine unit.

  • Mr Tecjunke

    Stop being so freakn anal…ur nexus one gives u the pure vanilla google experience u cry about over all other bloated carrier phones so be easy;ur phone works & u’ll have ginerbread soon enough…it’s not that much noticeable differences anyway.STOP BITCHN…A Tegra 2 processor w/ the pure google experience is what u guys should be praying 4 cuz the nexus dropped the ball in my opinion!!!!!!!!

    • Scotter

      There is a difference between “being anal” or “crying” AND asking for what you want. You want different things than I do. I’m sure there are many ways you want things to be in your life that I would think of as “no big deal”. So for you to label anyone “anal” for wanting something a certain way… well all “moral judgement” philosophy aside, at the very least you open yourself up to being inaccurate because (a) you don’t know me; and (b) if there is one other person out there who agrees with me then this point (as most) is not a clear “so and so is right” or “so and so is wrong”. So you can yell “stop bitchin” about my choices or you can choose not to let it get to you.

  • Mr Tecjunke

    Correction;the nexus S dropped the ball…no dual proccesor & no penta bands…those 2 features would have made it thee Android King!!!

  • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

    Is there any chance for ANY other OS after ginger comes out??? Are we looking at Google having 100% market share??? That would be the best day in history!!!!

    • Xian

      100% market share is not a good thing. Having competition is what drives innovation.

      • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

        Well get used to it! Because Microsoft/Apple and everyone else will be going under because Google’s taking over buddy! Google will dominate the world. We will be 100% dependent on Google! And I am loving it!

  • Bringit

    Android is fast becoming a huge mess. New phones coming out left and right, no real clue when updates will happen, and which phone will get the update. It should not be this complicated.

    • Paeth

      Awww, poor liddle douchebag.

      The 110 million Android phones a year must be absolutely KILLING losers like you.

      Love it!

      • Bringit

        Um yeah, you seem like a real winner. Intelligent post.

      • Donny

        Android is killing itself really. Once everyone who has an android device currently gets left behind with some ancient OS people will start to get mad. Most people who own an android device currently are likely not even a year into their contract and already have a phone that is probably not going to receive updates in the future. So the next one to two years are going to be very frustrating for most Android users.

      • Bringit

        Exactly.

      • jam

        you ought to have thought to buy good hardware
        i bought a htc desire/bravo.. it has slight more ram than the nexus one but is otherwise the same, except for the sense UI. but that will probably fall away with 2.3

      • MicroNix

        Wow Donny you’ve become quite the Android expert haven’t you? Android isn’t doing anything to kill itself. Some manufacturers are killing themselves. There’s strong support for Android upgrades to all the popular models, esp from HTC and Moto. And those manufacturers who don’t support the upgrades? Well, they’ll just self destruct. This whole updating a phone is new to everyone except Apple. And for Apple it is dead simple. They build it, they program it and they certainly do fully control it (even though its your phone). If Apple were to screw that up (oh wait they did with iOS 4 and their older phones) then they’ve really got a problem.

        You should really troll where you have a little more knowledge on what you are spewing.

      • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

        You tell ‘em Paeth! They don’t understand because they don’t have Goofan (aka Apple Hater) IQ’s like you and I! We are OFF THE CHARTS! As Android becomes 100% of the market it will be a little scary because people like you and I with such amazing intellects won’t be able to explain things to these “little people” called Apple Fanboys! Which by the way, are arguably the dumbest people in the universe.

    • Sean76

      I agree..too much, too soon.

  • Xian

    @Goofan (aka Apple Hater), settle down before you jizz in your pants.

    Having Google take 90-100% of marketshare is not a good thing. When you own that much of the marketplace you become complacent, and stop delivering/creating new innovations.

    I don’t like Apple products myself, I like what Google is doing but at the same time I have enough intelligence to know what you’re saying actually sounds stupid.

    • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

      Not Google. they will NEVER EVER grow complacent. They will always innovate and continue to gather information about us and our habits and keep it safe! They are the only ones we can trust. I HATE Apple’s products and you and I know they are ALL terrible products. I put an iPhone 4 next to my Droid X and the iPhone looks like it’s made out of plastic, really cheap plastic. It’s GROSS!

  • Noel

    Gingerbread was also tested on the N1…so i dont see any reason for all the “coming in a few weeks stuff’”. This is just to give the Nexus S a week or two in the market. I went to Bestbuy..played with the Nexus S…this is just a Galaxy S device twicked a little, slapped on Gingerbread with a Nexus logo. I see no reason why i will trade the Nexus S for my N1. I will wait for the perfect Dual core vanila, 4 inch Android device…be it either from HTC, Samsung, LG, Acer, Huwei, Sony E etc. The nexus S is a cool device but i will w8 for now
