Google extends free calling in Gmail through 2011

Services

Google announced Monday the extension of a free calling initiative for U.S.-based Gmail users that was set to expire this month. ”In the spirit of holiday giving and to help people keep in touch in the new year,” Google has extended free calling in the U.S. and Canada through the end of 2011. The promotion applies to all calls made from within Gmail, and is completely separate from Google Voice, which also affords free calling to the U.S. and Canada. Gmail’s recently added voice calling feature is thought to be a prelude to the eventual addition of VoIP services to Google Voice.

This has actually come in handy for me. No joke. Two weeks ago before my DROID X’s magical update, it was locking up, freezing and not really DOESing like DROID DOES. My DROID was effectively out of commission and I needed to get a hold of my girlfriend and some friends for a Christmas party we were going to so I used my MacBook Pro via my VZW mifi to call them. It was money. I then did a hard reset on my DROID X, which got it functional until my update. I still love DROID though it hasn’t DOES like it should DOES lately.

That’s just awesome. Between gmail calling & google voice for android I barely use any minutes on outgoing calls.

Tin-foil hat wearers everywhere wince in fear of a service they will never use.

People are insane if they think this is any less “private” than on their cell or landlines.

That’s cool, I was hoping they’d extent it!

How can it be completely separate from Google Voice if it uses Google Voice?

If you have Google voice attached to the account, it uses that info (and I would assume will not expire..), but if you do not have Google Voice, or it is not on that account, you still have access to free calls via your gmail account.
