Official PlayStation app coming ‘very soon’ to iPhone, Android devices

Gaming

It’s not exactly the PlayStation Phone we’ve been anxiously awaiting, but Sony has announced the imminent release of its first official PlayStation app for the iOS and Android platforms. Before you get ahead of yourself… no, this is not the mobile gaming platform Sony is reportedly cooking up — but at least its a start. Features of the PlayStation app include:

  • Check out your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends’ games and online status.
  • Discover all the latest games, news and hardware for your PlayStation 3, PSP and PlayStation 2.
  • Read all the announcements on the European PlayStation.Blog.
  • Share your favourite products or news with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or via e-mail.

Sony stated that its free PlayStation app will launch “very soon” for the iPhone, iPod touch and Android devices running version 1.6 or later. The app will initially be available in UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands, with additional markets to follow.

Big deal. Just another marketing technique. Nothing valuable for gamers.

Lame. The functionality of this app is bullshit in disguise. All the activities you do on it are basically doing marketing on behalf of Sony. PASS!

How is looking at trophies, contacting friends, and getting info about games considered marketing?

I hope you were being facetious. As the article states:

        * Check out your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends’ games and online status <— what you referred to

        * Discover all the latest games, news and hardware for your PlayStation 3, PSP and PlayStation 2 <— direct marketing to YOU

        * Read all the announcements on the European PlayStation.Blog <— have you read this blog?

        * Share your favourite products or news with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or via e-mail <— if this isn't marketing (word-of-mouth / social marketing), then I don't know what is
