mobile

Ahh, the joy of being an Android fan. With each new announcement comes the knowledge that the latest, greatest Android smartphone will only hold that title for a matter of months, if not weeks. In fact, those who hop aboard the Nexus S train tomorrow can go to sleep tonight already knowing what the next stop looks like… and the station’s name is Optimus 2X. LG’s upcoming Android phone was just formally announced and though it was hardly a surprise, we can now feast our eyes on a press release that lays out what will soon become baseline specs for Android smartphones. The highlight, of course, is that glorious dual-core Tegra 2 processor. The LG Optimus 2X will launch next month in Korea, with releases in Europe and the rest of Asia to follow. No announcement has been made with regard to pricing or North American availability. Hit the jump for the full press release and prepare to be jealous for at least a week or two, when the next jaw-dropping monster of an Android phone is announced.

LG LAUNCHES WORLD’S FIRST AND FASTEST DUAL-CORE SMARTPHONE

LG Optimus 2X with Tegra 2 Offers Top Multimedia Features for a Better User Experience

SEOUL, Dec. 16, 2010 — LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled the LG Optimus 2X, the world’s first smartphone with a dual-core processor. Along with more powerful multimedia features, the LG Optimus 2X’s high-performance Tegra 2 processor makes for faster, smoother web browsing and applications and lets users multitask with virtually no screen lag.

“Dual-core technology is the next leap forward in mobile technology so this is no small achievement to be the first to offer a smartphone utilizing this technology,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, CEO and President of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “With unique features such as HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) mirroring and exceptional graphics performance, the LG Optimus 2X is proof of LG’s commitment to high-end smartphones in 2011.”

Developed by graphics processor powerhouse NVIDIA, the dual-core Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip found in the LG Optimus 2X runs at a clock speed of 1GHz and boasts low power consumption and high performance for playing video and audio. Users will experience faster web browsing and smoother gameplay compared with single-core processors running at the same speed as well as instantaneous touch response and seamless multitasking between applications.

The LG Optimus 2X offers 1080p HD video playback and recording with HDMI mirroring that expands content on external displays to full HD quality. The LG Optimus 2X can connect wirelessly to any DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compatible digital device such as HD TVs for a console-like gaming experience taking full advantage of the phone’s HDMI mirroring, accelerometer and gyro sensor. The smartphone also includes both rear- and front-facing cameras, microSD memory expandability, Micro-USB port and a hefty 1500mAh battery.

The LG Optimus 2X will be available in Korea next month with countries in Europe and Asia to follow. The phone will initially be released with Android 2.2 (Froyo) and will be upgradeable to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). The upgrade schedule will be announced in local markets in due course.

Key specifications:

  • 1Ghz Dual-core Processor (NVIDIA Tegra 2)
  • 4-inch WVGA screen
  • 8GB memory (up to 32GB via microSD)
  • 1,500 mAh battery
  • 8 megapixel rear camera and 1.3 megapixel front camera

They are going to need a bigger battery.

Right now NOBODY knows but from the research white papers by TI on their OMAP4440 – which also is a Cortex A9 Dual-Core CPU … same as Tegra 2 (which is scalable to 8-cores; and used in 2012 Audi cars as the MMI system) – it SHOULD be more efficient with energy consumption than the current Cortex A8 or ARMv8 based smartphones.

nice job reposting stats and specs you learned using google. no one is impressed though. this phone does look sick however.

  • Norm

the DROID looks just like the iphone 4

    • http://twitter.com/SParKlngCyaNide SparklingCyanide

yea, too bad it’s not a droid its an Android.

I an drawn to this site like a moth to a lamp simply for your comments.
Have you ever thought about starting up your own iphone fanboy site.
It should be called “I am a miserable little peon” or some variation thereof
It could be filed with your “onionesque” quotes, and could be very cathartic for dissatisfied fanboys the world over.
Why keep making other people money? I’m sure a majority of people, like myself, come here just to see the train wreck that is you.
I wish you luck, send me a link.

        Walter,

I appreciate that you are just about the only one on here that realizes its all satire. And honestly, you aren’t that far off with why I have been as annoying as I am on here. It’s part of a project not all that unlike you just described. However, my opus is not yet complete. Regardless, I really do have on of the DROIDs, and I like it more than the iphone 3G I once owned. Thanks for being a good sport, it’s nothing personal.

I’m just saying both platforms have developed such a die-hard following I think you could garner page hits from 4 classes of fanboys. Iphone and android users that think you are serious and get their feathers ruffled, and those that know you are joking and like to see people get their feathers ruffled.
Like Howard Stern, listeners that hated him used to tune in more than users that liked him.
And I find myself fascinated with how personal people get about these two mobile OSes. I didn’t really get into tech until about 7 years ago, so I have no first hand knowledge of what went on in the 90′s, but this seems unprecedented.
Maybe the fact that it is mobile, in your pocket, that it has become man’s best friend(its like the new dog). I would defend my dog this vehemently.
Let me know if you need help on the site….

OMG, Norm! You wrote a real comment! Wow what a sight…a took a screenshot so I can remember this moment forever :)

And I’m sure Walter isn’t the only one who figured it out. I got it I think about two weeks ago ;)

PS The only annoying thing about your posts is the idiots commenting “it’s not DROID it’s Android!!!” after every one of your posts. Either they read the comments section once a year, or….well I don’t know, they are dumb-a$$3$….

And yes, “is the idiots” is grammatically correct. I learned that this year :)

      • Norm

        Walter,

I really couldn’t agree more. I became interested in all of this when I got sidekick 2 off of ebay back the fall of 05..(I was stoked by the fact I could be on AIM or check myspace from my phone). Keep in mind this was when the RAZR’s were to “norm” and the first iphone wasn’t even announced yet. Like you I have no clue why there is such animosity, but don’t get me wrong, I find it both interesting and hilarious. It’s like PC vs. Mac in the 90′s except this is a much more even fight.

Today people are really passionate about their phone OS, manufacture or carrier. The crazier part? It’s not just people on tech blogs. These things are such a huge part of everyone’s lives that even my friends and acquaintances who don’t read any of these type of sites get real in life flame wars over iphone vs. droid at the bar. While they aren’t nearly as knowledgeable or passionate as people on here, it’s still nuts.

        @sirpaul
“Is” is correct because the subject is singular “the only thing” not idiots.
        Good grammar

      • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

        You’ve broken my heart!

      • http://www.facebook.com/peterf Peter Fares

So is there just one of you, or is there multiple people trolling under the name Norm?
I remember once I posted under the name Norm but completely opposite of what you usually do.

Most of us get what he is TRYING to do… It’s just a real fail. But hey, if this is his hobby, more power to him.

    • palomosan

Really, you look like you don’t know much, just saying.

      • Anonymous

In case you didn’t know, Norm is a hypertroll. I spread this knowledge in the (futile) hope that people will start ignoring him.

  • http://twitter.com/SParKlngCyaNide SparklingCyanide

    doesn’t mention RAM?

  • Beeker

Phone looks sweet! I hope it comes to Sprint and/or TMobile. I have accounts on both providers.

    • Anonymous

Mostly likely neither. Typical for new Korean tech.

  • Anonymous

What a smartphone actually needs are better battery life and more RAM.

  • http://twitter.com/vashishthajogi Vashishtha Jogi

What about the antenna? CDMA? GSM?

    • Anonymous

It’s starting in Korea, so CDMA is a safe bet (although I’m not sure if the bands will match what we have in the U.S. or other CDMA-using countries).

Considering it’ll be going to Europe afterwards, there’s a safe bet that they’ll tuck a GSM radio in there somewhere.

  • Anonymous

This looks friggin sweet! Hope it comes to The Network.

  • http://schultzter.ca Schultzter

Looks sweet. Except that it’s LG – so I hope this will be available pure and unlocked from 3rd parties but I’m not counting it, probably only locked and crippled by the carriers!

  • Mgl323

Damn that phone looks sexy! To bad it debuts with Android 2.2 and not 2.3. Next generation of smartphones are moving to dual-cores, but what ever happened to 2Ghz “super smartphones” that Motorola and HTC were bringing out in the end of 2010???

    • Bryan

You can bet they are being held back to Feb in order to LiTE things up.

      • Giantgene

I have a samsung intercept still new enough to return within 30 days for a different pohone. it’s 2.1…what about the motorola go for sprint??

  • Prop

Last time I checked, the Nokia N82 was first smartphone with a dual processor.

    • MyPhoneCaptivates

holy crap your right! the N82 did have a dual core processor! Props to you for giving me this information.

  • Attguy963

They Make these devices with better processors all the time, but now I think manufacture need to improve battery life on these phones. I really would love to see the bettery life on this sucker.

  • zps

    needs more storage.

    • http://www.facebook.com/peterf Peter Fares

Has an SD slot. Plenty of storage.

      • zps

tops out at 32gb…not enough for me.

  • Steve jobs

OMG tomorrow I’m selling my iPhone and getting this thing.
HOLY MOTHER OF DUCK, IT HAS DUAL CORE TEGRA CHIP. bye bye apple A4 chip

    Sent from my iPhone.

  • Ignatz Krebz

Who cares about dual core. It’s not magical until Apple does it.

  • Anonymous

Goodbye carrier pigeon, hallo Nexus S!

  • ydnandy

Anyone know if that is an actual weather/time widget that is available or if its just a drawing of something they will be developing?

    thanks

  • IonZen

I don’t know how big of a difference the processor wil make but the rest of the specs are items all EVO owners have been enjoying for a while.

  • Carl

Carl says the next Iphone is going to be quad core and much better than this turd phone.

  • Supermartin73

    goo goo gaa gaa

  • Rick00770

Like thin design, looks like evo and iphone combo, real thing for me will be who,s selling it, at and t and verizon got greedy with their data charges, so if sprint doesnt get it to heck with it,as far as im concerned. Crazy, they come out with faster phones every 2 weeks, it needs bigger screen like droid x,evo ,h2 d2, just dont get these designers, always leave off something it should have, they havnt made a decent smartphone yet, like others say needs good battery life.

  • Jesus91kr

    very nice!~~~ LG

  • Jesus91kr

  • Hardened4otherMen
