Facebook for Android updated, chat and push notifications in tow

Software

Late yesterday, Facebook released an update for its Android mobile application, bearing the version number 1.5. The new code adds support for Facebook chat — in both the foreground and background — as well as push notifications. Push notifications will only work on devices running Android 2.2 or higher, and the new build does, as always, include “various bug fixes.” The new hotness is in the Android Market, go get em’!

Is it working properly? Is it true push notifications? How is the chat feature working with this update?

Yea it really is PUSH…. funny thing is I thought it wasn’t in there because in the settings there isn’t anything about “automatic” but notifications just come in…. immediately … Finally, this is what I’ve been waiting for….

I haven’t tried the chat….. I’m one of those “Offline” people that doesn’t go “Online” because as soon as you do 1000 people try to IM you at once lol

Oh OK cool…thx for the feedback…it is greatly appreciated! And yes, I can relate to what you’re saying about the chat feature…it’s like they’re on stand by waiting to see if you’ll come online…LOL

Chat is a nice novelty. Push is way overdue. Was starting to miss the BB FB app.

Nice to start approaching feature parity with the iPhone version. Not going to claim to be overjoyed or satisfied with the app until it’s the same, though.

I know that this info above is incorrect, i have a friend running this update on a Hero using 2.1 and it works just fine. I’m glad this is out but its incorrect information about having to have 2.2.

So the makers of the software are wrong. They say you need 2.2 for push to work. Typical “a friend of mine says” toolbox comment.

Push only on 2.2 or higher? Damn you AT&T!!!

  • Usmeagle

i have a Evo with 2.2 and mine works great, glad its finally been updated with push and being able to IM your friends using your phone.

I’m using DInc with 2.2 and I ahven’t received any push updates. I still open the app to see if anything new… yes I even uninstalled and reinstalled… I see no options for push and i’m 100% not getting them.

My vibrant with an unofficial 2.2 rom works great. Got the FB push notification before the FB email (pushed to gmail) did. Tested chat and it works as well!

      • MushroomStampN

I wonder if there is a setting on FB that I have to set, because I get emails telling me people posted to my wall, but I don’t get any FB indication unless I go into the App.

Not sure Im comfortable with the new permission requirements though. Something about Facebook knowing my GPS location creeps me out. Did not update.

Places? check-in’s? and don’t act like you didn’t just update you status to say your at pizza hut anyways.

I dont understand the Push notification part. If someone hits me up on chat it sends a notification. But if someone reply to my post it still emails me, but no notification.

Maybe you need to change your notification settings in Facebook?
