Nokia confirms plans to cut 800 jobs

Nokia confirmed Tuesday that it plans to cut approximately 800 jobs in its home country of Finland. The newly confirmed work force reductions are in addition to the 1,800 jobs Nokia announced it would have to cut this past October. Nokia said it has concluded negotiations with employee representatives, and it will give affected workers between five and 15 months salary as severance. Nokia stated that the new round of layoffs will begin in January 2011, and it hopes some of the laid off employees will be relocated elsewhere in the company.

Is anybody really surprised by this? They’ve still got a stranglehold on the low-end market, but they’re losing major mindshare all over the world. The iPhone and Android are driving innovation. WP7 is late to the party, but they’ve finally joined it and it looks like they mean business this time.

And then there’s Nokia, whose claim to fame in this game (rhyme unintentional) is…? Exactly. They used to be the top dogs. Technology doesn’t care about yesterday. Only tomorrow.

I went to visit friends and family in Europe this year and every phone was either a Nokia or an LG. They aren’t dying off anytime soon.

I definitely don’t think they’re going anywhere anytime soon. But I think Nokia, in their current incarnation, is going to have a very hard time being mentioned as one of the leaders in the cell phone industry unless we’re talking about raw numbers of phones out in the world.

Nokia is the number one selling brand around the world outside of the usa you have no idea what you are talking about

I feel like you read what I said but didn’t understand what I meant. I didn’t say (or mean to imply) that Nokia is going to go bankrupt tomorrow.

But I very clearly remember a time that you looked to Nokia when you wanted to know where the industry was going, where the best-designed phones were, etc. If they keep going at this current pace, that’s no longer going to be applicable. Nowadays, Apple is driving most (some would argue all) of the innovation in the industry, and Android is hot on their heels. MS is late to the party, but they’re bringing the big guns to bear and they look like they’re serious about it this time.

Can you say the same about Symbian? Can you say anything about MeeGo other than, “Damn, I wonder when the hell that’s coming out”? I don’t think so, and that’s the point that I was trying to make. If they keep this up, they’re no longer going to be at the forefront of innovation.

Zach’s becoming my favorite blogger. His latest posts always make me smile. So what’s funny about this one?
I’ll give you a tip: Read the original news from Reuters. Then read again Zach’s first two sentences and think hard if you really can deduct what Zach deducted…

Spoiler alert: the announced 800 are NOT in addition to October announcement’s 1800, it is just the first part of it.

Oh man, I’m sad to see Nokia going down like this. I’ve never own anything Nokia in the past but I’m sure they once made great products.
