Gaming

In its first four days of availability, Epic Games’ new title Infinity Blade grossed over $1.6 million according to a report. The highly anticipated game launched on December 9th and based on data from Apple’s Game Center, there were over 271,000 different users who played the game as of Sunday evening. Infinity Blade costs $5.99 on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, which means the title grossed well over $1.6 million in less than four days. Infinity Blade is the first Unreal Engine 3-based iOS game and, along with titles like Rage HD, it is helping to usher in a new generation of iOS games. Hit the break for the Infinity Blade trailer.

Incredible! The iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad are now a definite competitor to Sony and Nintendo.

What a great era to be living in.

    • Troll + Zombie = Trombie

Really? A contextual game on rails, whose sales record [will] beat the previous record set by catapult game, is competition against games like God Of War and Scribblenauts? Come on. That’s like saying a Toyota Yaris is a car and a Rolls Royce is a car so the Yaris is definitely a competitor to the Rolls Royce. NOT EVEN CLOSE. People who sit there and say “games are games” are people who probably don’t play games or spend more time on Solitaire than any other game.

These games are popular and sell because the IPHONE IS POPULAR and HAS A HUGE INSTALL BASE. it does not mean that millions of gamers are going to drop their PSPs for an iPod touch… especially not for crap like Angry Birds. All it speaks to is the popularity of the device and the # of people who own it, and nothing to do w/ the gaming market. The only thing Nintendo and Sony have to fear here are those casual people who *might* own a handheld to play some games, and the percentage of parents of who might think, “well, my son has an iphone, he don’t need no PSP”.

However, I do love Plants Vs Zombies. Totally, I’m addicted to it. I am not going to buy an iPhone or iPod Touch or iPad just to play Plants Vs Zombies. Ever. Hell, my GF found an old gameboy advance SP in a box of her stuff and I about flipped the F out over it. I’m more excited about a 5 year old Gameboy than any game iPhone or Android has to offer. $6 for a game on rails or $8 for Wario Ware off ebay? COME ON.

You know the Wario Wares are coming. When you have popular new titles like ngmoco’s Rolando 2, Square Enix Chaos Rings, or the ground-breaking Aralon: Sword of Shadows. We already have entertaining games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Golden Ax as a port. We’re gotten Space Ace and Dragon’s Lair for iOS. We’ve got native Sim City and Oregon Trail, and we’re getting even more retro-games with the new Amiga emulator giving us Defender of the Crown. I had a blast playing Dungeon Hunter by Gameloft, and I’m looking forward to a new one. I even love Nanosaur 2, Billy Frontier and…

You know… there are WWAAAAAAYYYY more games for iOS than there ever were for Game Boy. Nintendo has said they see Apple as a significant threat. If you don’t think movements like this with Infinity Blade and Rage are significant, you’re really missing the boat. 1.6 million in revenue based on participation in Game Center. Imagine those that aren’t connected to Game Center. That’s an INSANE amount of revenue. This Christmas season has been a new games tsunami. I’m not sure what to buy.

Can’t wait for multiplayer and free roaming!

    Wow, just wow.
In few more days their revenue will surpass that of Angry Birds.
This will surely encourage developers to put on moe serious game titles on the iOS platform.

That’s good. Angry Birds is a stupid game.

There’s not a single inflammatory comment posted yet that would get me in the mood to mess with people. This sucks.

    • numetheus

I know. I’m waiting for the brainless “you have an opinion and like the game while I don’t, so you must all be drinking the coolaid you isheep” comments. This is an awesome game and like it for that reason.

  • Dragon

This looks absolutely stunning. I’m not really a phone gamer, but this may draw me in. The medieval setting and glorious graphics are simply awe inspiring. Wow, the bar has just been set for smart phone game developement. 2011 LTE phones, the gauntlet has been thrown down.

  • will

    That looks awesome!

  • Mark Texas

Having played this the last few days it finally struck me.

This is a modern day Dragon’s Lair

It’s a game on rails and has very limited skill reguirements, it’s a time based for reaction game just like Dragon’s Lair, Space Ace etc. Don’t get me wrong the visuals are very nice but most of the “game” is canned cut scenes. I’d like to see it open up to allow full roaming around the game world.

    Back to Black Ops …

I’m sure its coming. Real Racing 2 is already out using the Unreal 3D engine and it looks gorgeous. You just need someone working on full motion RPG with it, and we’re in business. Yeah, I’m personally love them to just port something like Dark Sector. Full six axis control using the gyroscope and accelerometer isn’t exactly rocket-science these days. I think we’re entering a new era now.

  • Paeth

    LOL, absolute garbage game.

Just imagine how bad the games the Hipster Douchebag iPhone owners passed over for this turd of a game.

    • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

You are right Paeth. Check my post just above yours. You let the iSheep know. We only follow ONE MAN, ONE COMPANY! Eric and Google. We do what they say, because they are NOT EVIL. We hate who they tell us to hate, and we love who they insist we love. ALL FREE!!!!!

You’d be much more interesting if you were more subtle.

  • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

On Android, I have seen this game on 3D where it ACTUALLY comes out of the screen and touches someone! That’s the power of the most advanced OS EVER (and I mean EVER) invented. And, to top it off, there’s new technology (coming in Honeycomb, for the dumbass iSheep, Android 3.0) that the more intense the graphics and performance on an Android phone, the battery charges itself. Meaning, Google has invented the perpetual battery! And it’s ALL FREE. Google doesn’t want our money! Not a penny. Just our entire life’s info, but that’s ok. We don’t mind! Take that CrApple!

Every game developer should adopt unreal engine for android and iphones!!!
    It’s…..EPIC!!

I don’t give a shit whether you’re a fan of iOS or not, you have to give credit where it’s due. That’s gorgeous, and it’s one of the real benefits of knowing exactly what kind of hardware you’re programming for.

I’d certainly love to see it come to Android, but I’m not dumb enough to think it’ll happen.

  • Galahaad

yipee…..$1.6 million in the first 4 days…..WoW Cataclysm grossed APPROXIMATELY $13.4 BILLION in the first 24 HOURS

    • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

Dude, that was YEN. NO ONE. Not even Exxon has that type of revenue. You can’t be a Goofan (aka Apple Hater) otherwise you’d be smart enough to know this. So, you must be an Apple Fanboy. Arguably the dumbest people on the planet.

    • http://www.precursor.org/ CleverBoy

3.3 million copies. $132 million in 24 hours. Isn’t WoW amongst some of the highest selling games of all time? In 2007, Halo 3 generated $170 million in revenue in 24 hours. So… these are PC and dedicated game console titles.

The total of ALL Nintendo DS games sold as of September 30th, 2010 is 773.34 million. New Super Mario Bros. is 24.13 million, followed by Nintendogs at 23.26 million. If iOS has any games selling over 24 million, something tells me they’re doing pretty well. I’m sure Nintendo won’t like it however, as their games cost more for consumers to buy.
