New Google Maps coming ‘in a matter of days’; adds offline mode, vector-based map drawing

Software

Yesterday, at the AllThingsD conference, Google’s Andy Rubin demoed a new, improved version of Google Maps that is due to hit Android devices “in a matter of days.” Mr. Rubin was careful not to give up too much information, saying he wanted to allow the Maps team to have the honors of detailing the new application, but he did give us several key pieces of information. First, the new version of Maps will be available, for the time being, for Android devices only (phones and tablets) and will be vector based. The vector-based maps allow for smoother scrolling, dynamic content loading, and less data being transferred over the network. Second, the new Maps will store maps that you query ofter for lightning-quick load times. If you always find yourself searching for restaurants or coffee shops in Times Square, that map will cache locally on your phone (it will even be able to used cached maps to navigate when offline).

Although not mentioned during his interview, Engadget is reporting that the new Maps will be supported by the Galaxy S, Nexus S, DROID, DROID x, DROID 2, DROID Incredible, EVO 4G, and G2 smartphones. Mr. Rubin did also say the version works on tablets, so we’re guessing that the Galaxy Tab will have the dubious honor of running these new bits as well.

It is a pretty exciting time to be a member of the Android family!

I sure do wish they’d release an updated version of Google Maps for the iPhone …oh wait, I’m sure Apple won’t let them.

That is a shame. I played with one at Best Buy yesterday and it had potential. However when you have manufactures and the OS writers not on the same page ever you are going to have that.

I like mine, It could be a little faster and there are other little things. All in all a very good device. Crashes a little too often for my liking but seems to be music app related. At least the browser doesn’t crash all the unlike Safari on the iPad did for me – I know others who had no issues.

Your carrier may not provide the upgrade to Gingerbread on the Tab but Samsung have confirmed they will.

will it be on the iPhone??

I think this is the final nail in the coffin for Navigon and Tom Tom.

Dumbphones are still a large portion of the market, these people are happy to pay $80 for a bucket Tom Tom and not pay for large data plans. There is a market, it’s just not what it used to be.

Yes and no. Several car manufacturers are putting Android into their cars. If this idea takes off then wave bye bye to the standard bolt on satnav. Todays satnav makers will be software vendors.

No love for the Dell Streak…so much for the “openness” of android LOL.
I blame at&t…they wouldn’t want this on their device, might chop into their overcharged map.

    • Anonymous

BGR didn’t mention the Streak, doesn’t mean the latest version of maps won’t be on it soon.

You get what you pay for.. Android is not a universal symbol of fairness, it’s an OS that if developed right can be, in many peoples eyes the best OS. I would never use a Dell or Sony Android phone as of today they are ugly, behind the curve, and slow on updates.. That aside they are still excellent phones I would just consider other OSes if left to those

  • AirRuler

So when I get lost with the newest version, will my phone ask, “what’s your vector, Victor?”

  • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

    yay for offline mode!

  • Windontree

Offline maps in “days”, offline navigation in “years”?

    • Anonymous

I suspect that Google will attempt to avoid off-line navigation as much as possible as that doesn’t provide them info about what you do and where you are. Europe is much better for Google than the US because we have better cell coverage. Can’t take a sh*t without them knowing which door you went in can came out if you leave your GPS on as well. Accuracy of about 5 feet.

“so we’re guessing that the Galaxy Tab will have the dubious honor of running these new bits as well.”

    ‘Dubious”… Really?

What need would there be for hesitating or doubting this update for any reason, and what’s not to not to be relied upon; suspect when using Google Maps as it’s been long regarded as some of the finest navigation software available ?

Talk about using a word completely out of context – Geez!

  • Disctosser

No love for the Droid Incredible? Really?
