Microsoft sees global Kinect shortages

Gaming

In case you haven’t been paying attention, Microsoft’s Kinect is the premier gift for gamers this holiday season. Microsoft sold over 2.5 million Kinect units in less than a month, and reception has been phenomenal around the world; to the point where several markets are seeing demand that outweighs supply. Preliminary reports suggested that Microsoft might be manufacturing shortages to build hype — an accusation that follows short supply of any popular tech toy — but Microsoft execs in the U.K. were willing to set the record straight. Neil Thompson, Microsoft’s general manager for Xbox U.K. and Ireland, confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that the shortages are “absolutely not” a ploy.

“The choices you always have are: do we launch in November or do we wait until February, March when we could hit some bigger launch numbers but then we miss Christmas. It takes time to scale,” Thompson told GamesIndustry.biz. “It’s absolutely not a strategy, we want to get the product into consumers hands as quickly as we can because we think it’s exciting, it’s innovative. We wanted to do that for Christmas and that’s what we’ve done. We’ve built a really strong supply and resupply chain over the coming weeks.”

Despite shortages, Microsoft expects to sell 5 million Kinect sensors in 2010.

If you live close to a Microsoft store they have 1,000s. I not exaggerating, 1000s.

when did Microsoft get a store?

    • Paeth

      Yes.

Microsoft’s crappy Sony Eye Toy style motion control device is in stores everywhere so it is hilarious to see their marketing types desperately trying the tired old “Order now! Supplies limited!” BS.

Not surprising to see Microsoft trying to pull this tired old marketing spiel – it’s from the same marketing/PR drones who tried to pretend the disastrous failure of the Window Phone 7 was “having shortages” because of the “tremendous demand”.

      LOL

Earth to Microsoft. Blowing 500 million dollars on this 150 dollar piece of crap Eye Toy clone isn’t going to turn the piece of junk Xbox 360 into a Wii type success. The entire gaming world watched you have to resort to faking two straight Kinect E3 demos because the piece of junk doesn’t work like the silly hype you bragged about. No amount of marketing money and having Oprah whoring herself to hock this turd of an add-on is going to get tens of millions of soccer moms to rush out and blow 300 dollars to wave their arms around like idiots for some imitative dance game.

The same idiotic Xbox fans who bought into the dead HD-DVD format are the same idiots dumb enough to buy this latest turd from Microsoft.

dude…grow the f*ing up….selling by hyping supply shortage is not new…started by Apple first…its close to selling 2-3 mill now , mean to say u are better all of them..NOTso take a chill pill adn relax..if u are a ps3 fannie, then enjoy playing with ur glow sticks….btw, you do realise the main reason why bluray won over HD-DVD…supposedly unbreakble DRM equivalent code thereby avoiding piracy….working so far…actually no…just got hacked few months back….all I can say is stupid hollywood studios..suckers got sucked in by Sony hype ( as are xperia owners, not dissing or anything)

You the f*cking idiot. Blu Ray didn’t get hacked – HDMI encryption keys got hacked. Know your facts before posting retarded things like that. There are multiple reasons the blu ray format won over hddvd. Being that the name sounds a lot cooler to consumers is a big reason. You think the hddvd format wouldn’t have been just as easily copied onto another disk? I hope not. Btw, yes the move is better than the hyped up webcam. How are those FPS games working out for it? Oops, sorry. You can still play soccer – assuming you have 6-10 feet of space, only have one friend and enjoy slow response time.

What pisses me off is how their “bundle” seems to be everywhere! Yet, you can’t just buy the Kintec by itself. Aren’t there anti-bundling laws? Any lawyers out there?

Glad that I pre-ordered mine and got a second one for my son.

As Microsoft built the crappiest hardware in console history for the Xbox 360, mine’s GPU died out of warranty so I won’t be contributing to Kinect shortages for the time being.

  • dex

I’ve noticed that the only kinect they still have in bestbuy/futureshop (in canada) is that the 4GB bundle. The 250GB bundle and the standalone sensor are all sold out.

Isn’t Move sales in the millions also?

    • Troll + Zombie = Trombie

I don’t know, did this article about the Microsoft Kinect say otherwise? Hm, perhaps should utilize Search bar for ‘Sony Playstation Move’ to find out.
