iPad 2 to ship from Foxconn in February

Tablets

A new report Tuesday morning suggests Apple has notified Foxconn, its next-generation iPad manufacturer, that initial shipments will commence in the next 100 days. The unconfirmed report originates from China’s industry watchdog, DigiTimes, and suggests that initial shipments will be in the 400,000 to 600,000 range. Those numbers seem quite low for the sequel to a device that is selling as well the iPad — Apple sold 300,000 iPads on its first day of availability and it reached the 1 million mark in 28 days. The company is currently selling over 1 million units each month. If DigiTimes’ report is accurate, we could see a large second shipment shortly after the first one, with Foxconn’s new plants in Chengdu possibly ramping up volume following the initial production runs in Shenzhen. Apple’s iPad 2 is expected to feature a thinner case, a Retina Display, a gyroscope and FaceTime support.

These reports could also be faked by competitors hoping that people hold off buying a tablet for christmas. Digitimes has been wrong so many times before.

Its only holding me off from buying a first gen ipad. All of the android tablets currently out will never be upgraded to a new OS and are DoA.

that’s a pretty bold comment, you sure about that?

I’ll be sure about that for him. I bought an Android phone (MyTouch Slide) and it still hasn’t seen 2.2 and 2.3 is already out. A lot of phones are still waiting on 2.2 while Google releases updates that the carriers and phone manufacturers don’t give a damn about. They don’t want to upgrade your phone (or your tablet) because they want you to buy a new one. They are making new software features seem like new hardware features to sell more phones. Tablets won’t be any different. Motoblur will slow down any Honeycomb updates for it’s Tab, the Galaxy tab will prob never see 2.3 (we’ll have Galaxy Tab 2 and that will have Honeycomb). Skinning and customizing is ruining the entire platform. Google releases an update with new features and “beats” Apple to them, but customers don’t see the update, and Apple releases those features and they are truely first to market with them.

I read an article that quoted a Samsung executive that said the Galaxy Tab will likely get 2.3 Gingerbread… but it would not get Honeycomb… the real tablet OS.

Samsung has new different devices planned for Honeycomb.

Basically…. Samsung rushed the Galaxy Tab out the door as fast as they could with whatever OS they could get their hands on… Froyo.

So yes… current Android tablets will probably be stuck with Froyo/Gingerbread… and will never get the real Honeycomb goodness.

It is going to have a “Retina Display”? That would be highly unlikely in my opinion…

A “retina display” that is exactly like the iPhone’s is yes, absurd. However a Display with an increased PPI is likely. Doubling it to 264 would be a 2048×1536 which would at least put it close to the iPhone and let Apple keep the same price point for the device, and being within 62ppi Apple will probably still call it a retina display since the difference will probably be negligble to the human eye

I agree with you on that.

There will be a lot of tax return dollars going to Apple.

The retina display is 326ppi, on a 10″ screen that would work out to a resolution higher then 3100×2400.

It is not going to have a retina display.

Hope the Retina Display becomes a reality- not counting on it. Would make it a vastly improved reading device if it does. Not sure where you got that info from. Too expensive and too hi res is what you hear about why it won’t happen. I’m rooting for it big time thou……

Sorry guys, but haven’t we learned anything from the PlayBook? this MUST be vaporware since it hasn’t been shown yet.

Where you been? The playbook’s been demoed all over the net and is supposed to be released early 2011 once RIM has all the details worked out with it’s partner carriers.

Been waiting for this iPad2, can’t wait.

I broke down and just got the current iPad. I have webcams on both my macbook and pc laptops and never ever use them. I also held out and got a galaxy s phone with a front facing camera, which I also never use. So I applied that logic to my purchase. I think the only real thing I will be missing out on with the new iPad is the lighter weight (if it uses the carbon fiber body) and possibly thinner dimension. I highly doubt they will have a ‘retina display’ for the new iPad.

So I think I’m good for now. I will get my next iPad when it comes with a 3D screen or some crazy crap like that…

Heh – a few more leaks, and some of the Foxconn execs can go jump off the roof, rather than just the workers.
