Google’s Andy Rubin shows off Motorola tablet prototype running Android 3.0

Tablets

If you happened to catch Andy Rubin’s talk at the D:Dive Into Mobile event last night, you undoubtedly noticed his demo of an unreleased version of Google Maps, on an unreleased Motorola tablet prototype, running an unreleased version of the Android mobile operating system. Rubin, who was pretty sparse with details, looked to be palming a 10-inch tablet manufactured by Motorola that contained “a dual-core NVIDIA processor.” When asked about a potential price point of the future hardware, Mr. Rubin responded with a TDB; although he did quip that if you wanted to buy the prototype he was holding, it would probably cost around $10,000. The tablet is also, “not due out for a while.” Hit the jump to see the complete 8-minute video and let us know what you think.

10,000 for an android tablet? Ripoff.

That’s what prototypes cost. Just as boxee how much theirs cost.

You’re out of your element, Donny!

Like someone mentioned … That’s the prototype cost. $10000 is most likely very, very low for a prototype. Because with one device you have to figure cost of engineer time dedicated to the project as well as other cost associated with it’s manufacture. The actual parts are probably under $200.

The OS on that thing looks pretty interesting. That would be a HUGE jump from gingerbread. I seriously doubt that is what the honeycomb build will look like, although i like it. Half gingerbread half linux look. Pretty neat, has me excited to see how this will develop!

Think there’ll be synergies between this and ChromeOS? Maybe almost same thing?

That is what I was kind of thinking. He briefly talks about that in the speech but doesn’t give a firm answer. Either way, I am excited. Big day for google, they really unloaded yesterday. I believe there is more coming today.

Those interviewers are pathetic — such pawns of Apple.

Consider me sold — just get the price right people. Can’t wait to try this.

You are right, they really didn’t know what they were talking about. Andy stayed extremely classy the whole time though. Some high class professionalism with some of his compliments toward the different manufactures.

If you are going to sell a product to the general public, you have to sell to the terms of the general public. And for the most part nobody cares about tech talk they just want a device to browse the web, run apps and look nice. Contrary to popular belief of people inhabiting tech blogs, the world is not made of people who want to know how technology works. Just like I really don’t care how my car works as long as it goes when I press the gas.

Big Difference here, the Motorola Tablet has a LTE Built in Phone as well

      Where is YOUR PROOOF!

I just nutted in my pants:)

That tablet is wicked sexy, and if there’s consistency with Moto build quality, consider me on the waiting list. I love that they’ve removed the buttons and made them on-screen, which is fine for a 10″ screen.

I’m curious to see the specs for this when the release date approaches (cameras, if any, screen resolution, etc.).

  • Drea

    not impressed.

That woman couldn’t have been more annoying.

  • SuperChunk

Yep, next year I’ll be snagging a tablet as there will finally be a real laptop replacement out.

if android didn’t run so much like a PC it could be an option for myself…i haven’t felt a real reason to own any tablet rather to just play with…

Anyone notice the talk about the “one button” on the iPad? Rubin’s answer (and the fact that his design team took *all* the buttons off), shows how little he knows about design heuristics.

The concept of the one button that restores the device to it’s default state is very, very important in the design world. It’s also a required feature if they want to get official approval for handicapped users too. I find it absolutely astounding that Rubin actually argues against it. The man simply doesn’t know anything about design.

Who the hell are these hosts? Mildly hostile. Thanks for showing me what show NOT to watch.

How many times did this guy say Apple and IPad. If you are interviewing/reviewing a Google product please focus on the product in front on you. What an idiot.

    • guest

The guy is obviously passive/aggressive. He needs to go back to using Red Hat 6.2 and a Dell Axim 5.

This looks almost the same as the viewsonic g-Tablet, which is also running an nvidia dual core chip- cost around $400 retail.

I own the G-Tablet, I actually got one of the first 1000 that were released- it’s amazingly fast w/ the dual core, still alot of hardware bugs, but even now it’s a game changer- it totally changed where and how i use a computer. remote desktop works really really well on tablets too.

You can already get 7″ android tablets for $150 from china – so i would be this thing would go for around $400-$450 w/ the motorola branding. Under $200 by next christmas once the market starts to get saturated.

This is going to totally change the education system, imagine carrying one tablet – instead of a pile of outdated text books. These are already almost the same cost as some college text books already, it’s just a matter of time before somebody releases digital versions of the books

    • guest

I would wish you were right, but there’s big money in text books. They’ve been scamming us for years making modest changes with each edition and charging kids a fortune, so I can’t see that happening anytime soon.

Another poor copy of an Apple product.
