Pandora has a change of heart; no Windows Phone 7 app planned [Updated]

mobile

Back in March of this year, Microsoft proudly announced that Pandora would be one of its big-name Windows Phone 7 launch partners. In an interesting turn of events last week, however, the popular Internet radio provider said on its Twitter account that it has no plans to develop an app for Microsoft’s new platform. Following reports of Pandora’s statement, the company reiterated its position:

I’m not sure if/when we will be available on [Windows Phone 7]. Appreciate everyone’s enthusiastic suggestions. I’m passing the feedback on.

We can’t imagine that Microsoft was lying when it boasted of Pandora’s imminent arrival on the Windows Phone 7 platform, but now Pandora is saying its future on the OS is uncertain. Pandora’s change of heart is yet another blow to Microsoft’s mobile platform as the company struggles to get popular apps on its new OS. Pandora Radio is one of several widely popular apps that would help ease customers’ transitions to WP7, though two of Pandora’s biggest competitors — Slacker and Last.fm — have developed and deployed Windows Phone 7 apps.

UPDATE: A Pandora spokesperson gave BGR the following statement with regard to the company’s plans for Windows Phone 7:

While we’re excited to see companies innovating and while we’re not ready to make an announcement specifically related to the Win 7 phone, we generally want to be everywhere our listeners want us to be.

If I were in Pandora’s position, I’d use the promise of WP7 support as a bargaining chip for getting a Pandora app on the 360.

Or maybe that’s just because I really wish Pandora were on the 360. :(

Now that’s what I want. Bring on a Pandora 360 app and a Pandora Media Center app while they are at it.

Still have yet to see anyone with a WP7.

    • Chris

Same here. I’ve been looking forward to asking someone who is a real world everyday user of the device what they thought of the OS, but have yet to have that opportunity.

Here here. That is my biggest disappointment so far. The Zune functionality is greatly limited on my HD7.

“Pandora’s change of heart is yet another blow to Microsoft’s mobile platform as the company struggles to get popular apps on its new OS”This statement + the linked opinion article = the equivalent of smelling your own farts all day and telling everyone it’s wonderful.

To work at BGR, you must prove you are double jointed. Easier to pat yourself on the back.

  • Stephen

Of course Microsoft was lying as they announced Angry Birds without the developer support also!

    • Frank Castle

I tried Angry Birds on the Samsung Galaxy tab. I’d have to say…. it’s pretty f’n gay.

    • Anonymous

Angry Birds was fun for a week, then I moved on.

I’m sure Pandora will be necessarily non-committal right up to the point that Microsoft cuts them a huge check and they announce their WP7 version, complete with rainbows and ponies.

I agree – they need the cash – who really subscribes to Pandora?

If I was Microsoft, I’d tell them to take a hike. When they do finally want to be on WP7, I’d still tell them to take a hike. You didn’t support us when we launched, you sure as hell aren’t going to be allowed to now. Their excuse is BS, especially since they have apps for RIM and WebOS. Slack, LastFM, and Zune Pass are better anyway.

Well…it’s going to be Pandora’s loss. The WP7 ecosystem will threaten iOS and Android going forward. There can’t be only 2 horses running this race and WP7 can get a lot of traction in enterprises too as it works very well with Exchange, Office and Sharepoint. The OS is snappy and the UI is visually refreshing with live tiles as opposed to app icons on the BB, iOS and Android. It’s early days but so far it’s been a breath of fresh air.I have Slacker and last.fm – don’t need no Pandora if they don’t want to be on WP7.

I agree, If Pandora doesn’t come to WP7, it is Pandora’s loss. I can use Last.fm or Slacker. No big loss…

What is going to be even worse for Pandora is when this platform does catch on, guess what happens, people will be using Slacker and last fm more, and Pandora will fade. The only thing Pandora will lose is market share and possible cash flow.

The truth is the iPhone works better with Exchange than WP7 right now. I know this because we have both here and use Exchange.

And Office on WP7 right now is a joke. The many iOS office apps that are compatible with Office are much better there too.

Once again, false advertising from MS. It would be worth it to buy one of these just to sue them.

  • Norm

Pandora is smart. The money is obviously with the DROID OS. WP7 is a joke, at least until it is on the VZW network. Until then it’s is a gimmick like when TEENmobile tried to release a fake DROID OS back with their K-mart special called the G1. Weak. Go DROID or go home!

“we generally want to be everywhere our listeners want us to be.”

conversely they don’t want to be where their listeners aren’t.

  • Gkevtar

Pandora? What are you doing? I want to be on Windows Phone 7 (and I am). Why arent you with me? Please settle your dispute with microsoft and give me this feature again.

  • http://twitter.com/livingbasehead Shelton

    Dear Pandora

    Suck it.

    From Canada

(For three years I havent been able to use this cause pandora is only American Ip’s)

  • Ntc_wright

I have no information regarding this. Just speculating. But what if Pandora heard the Zune was going to bring DJ to the Zune on WP7 with OTA streaming. What would you need Pandora for then? Surely this has to be on Microsoft’s to do list.

    • Tbearski

Had Pandora, rather Slacker! Pandora is like SiriusXm…Same songs over and over….

  • WP7: The Final Episode?

Pandora, get on WP7 so I can start giving away subscriptions for Christmas!

  • Tom

Now that Nokia has adopted Windows Phone who wants to be pandora will come out with app. FU Pandora!
