Google taking Gingerbread out of the oven today? Android 2.3 release due?

Software

Why not start off the week with an unconfirmed and tantalizing Android rumor, right? Thanks to one piece of known information, and one slightly more speculative nugget, the latest gossip has Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) due to drop sometime today. A few weeks ago, Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt quipped that his company’s next OS iteration, Gingerbread, would be available in “the next few weeks.” Combine that with an interesting one-liner from a Notion Ink press release:

“6th December is another big day for Android and you will find out how fast Notion Ink can work. (Eden is extremely compatible with 2.3).”

and you have all the ammunition you need for a sizzling internet rumor. If that still isn’t enough for you, Andy Rubin, Google’s VP of mobile platforms, is speaking at AllThingsD‘s D: Dive into Mobile event later this evening ( 6:30PM PT).

If you’re an Android enthusiast, throw salt over your left shoulder, keep your fingers and toes crossed, and charge up that Nexus One. Today could be a big day for you!

They will probably announce something like … coming to DROID ‘late summer’ …

It matters little when Gingerbread debuts. I’m still stuck on Eclair with my Fascinate, and by the time I actually do get Froyo, there will probably be apps out exclusive to Gingerbread. It’s a never-ending vicious cycle. Could somebody please tell the OEMs to hire some competent developers?

      Good luck w/ that, lol

That is just how great DROID is. Samsung has a new DROID coming early Q1 2011, so just get in line for it. I will be. It will come with 2.3 out of the box.

I just want froyo for my Fascinate!

Then another year of wait for the manufacturers to roll out the update to phones.

LOL….I’d be happy with Dell/AT&T releasing 2.2 for my phone.

  • Sergio

That’s awesome! Now instead of being one release behind my Captivate can be two releases behind… super!

Should I charge the Droid X too?

    • Booboolala2000

You won’t need to worry about the Droid X until June or July, if ever.

    • Norm

No, but I highly recommend you start saving up for the DROID X2 4G coming out in April. It will come with 2.3 (+blur) and will be the fastest DROID yet.

      • NewsWorthy

I’ll believe it when I see it but I am cautiously optimistic. That and a matching 10 inch Motorola Pad will make my Droid-Life better.

iphone 3g doesnt have multitasking?!?! fragmentation?!?!?! NO. Outdated hardware does not deserve updated software. same thing happens to iphones/apple products as with android powered phones. Actually this concept happens everywhere. google provides the software, not their problem from there on out.

      • Ericdejuan

its a differece. The iPhone 3G isnt still being SOLD to customers. There are still Android 1.6 phones still being sold and on the shelves as we speak (Xperia). 2.1 phones will still be sold to customers for the next year. Thats like BestBuy still selling computers with XP and Vista on installed.

      • Anonymous

Ummm what the 3g is still being sold to everywhere still even on Apple site..

      • Sergio

Ummm no it isn’t. The 3GS is still being sold… not the 3G.

  • Zmansrc

    Happy birthday to me!
