Google publishes Android 2.3 SDK for developers, details improvements

Breaking

When it rains it pours in Android-land! Earlier this morning, Google published an Android 2.3 video for developers. While the video focuses mainly on development, the developer website includes new APIs available in the new code, including: SIP-based VoIP support, NFC (Near Field Communication) support, support for gyroscope, rotation vector, linear acceleration, gravity, and barometer, and multiple camera support. Other improvements include UI refinements, faster keyboard input, better power management, and an improved task manager. Hit the jump to see the video and for a link to the official developer post!

I want those Android tee shirts, especially the one that frenchy has.

Better power management? About time. I don’t care what anyone says, the battery sucking ability on android devices is unparalleled.

On some devices, that is true, but my Droid X battery lasts a whole day without charge, and that’s with moderate use, which includes watching the Daily Show using Stock browser during lunch time.

Not sure what you are talking about. I bought a $39 battery and my droid incredible runs 16 hours on heavy use, same weight, same back cover (1750 mAh). I have another battery that will run 48 hours on heavy use, it was $49 (3500 mAh).

While its not as good as my BB on battery (probably because I used the BB less), my Fascinate lasts me a full day. Unplug in morning when I get up and plug in at bedtime.

I hope the gingerbread isn’t stale when/if Droid finally gets it.

Some UI related highlights from the SDK:
    - support for overscroll (will allow that spring effect when you read the end of a list)
    - support for customizing notification appearance
    - better support for large screens (you can create speficific resources for large screens now)

I couldn’t understand a damn thing they were talking about, especially in games. Please help understand because I’m confused

I wish that all the carriers and phone manufacturer’s could produce and sell a version of Nexus. As long as the phone specs are up to speed. And if Google approves it. I know that I would pay full retail for it.

Carriers don’t want to sell non bloated up/locked down handsets, how else are they supposed to screw every dime out of you?

      • Booboolala2000

True. But tmobile has the Nexus S and the G2. Seriously considering dumping Verizon when I move to Portland Oregon.

    Hurray for SIP!

Sounds like a nice improvement. I can’t wait to see what goodies will be in 3.0. I hope this ships on the Moto Olympus so I don’t have to wait for an update. Although, it will still probably come faster than those with Galaxy S.

Near Field Support is kinda cool when coupled with entertainment and dining places. This paves the way to buy anything with just your phone and no need to have cash/card on you.

The only cool thing about this release that isn’t still just catching up with iOS is the NFC…its implications will be profound.

    • Anonymous

NFC is a hardware option, so it’ll depend on which handset vendor chooses to add that hardware. So far I don’t believe anything being sold supports NFC…. yet

You’d think after 7 versions of this OS they’d finally fix GIF viewing in the browser… but NOOOO

    EDIT: I mean GIF animation

    • IamLIGHTspeed

Gif animations were fixed in 2.2, if I remember correctly…. They play fine in my stock browser via stock 2.2 Droid X…

I downloaded the 2.3 SDK, and it’s still broken. Moto may have done their own fix (I don’t have a Droid, so I can’t confirm)

grrrr…. still no mention of CardDAV and CalDAV… C’mon Google, get with the program! Let’s see some productive upgrades, not just some gaming crap.
