AT&T is the worst carrier in the U.S. according to Consumer Reports

mobile

Among the top carriers in the U.S., AT&T is the worst by a healthy margin. The news comes from this year’s Consumer Reports reader survey, which ranks Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile along with some regional carriers. Verizon Wireless was ranked as the nation’s top major carrier, though its score of 74 positions it in the No. 2 spot overall behind U.S. Cellular. Readers were asked to grade each carrier on several criteria including value, voice service quality, data service quality and customer support. The ratings were on a scale of “Worse” to “Better,” with three increments in between. AT&T received the lowest possible rating of “Worse” in eight out of nine categories, managing too eke out a next-to-lowest rating for SMS service quality. In response to the survey, AT&T had this to say:

We take this seriously and we continually look for new ways to improve the customer experience. The fact is wireless customers have choices and a record number of them chose AT&T in the third quarter, significantly more than our competitors. Hard data from independent drive tests confirms AT&T has the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network with our nearest competitor 20 percent slower on average nationwide and our largest competitor 60 percent slower on average nationwide.  And, our dropped call rate is within 1/10 of a percent – the equivalent of just one call in a thousand – of the industry leader.

Smartphones were also ranked in the same issue of Consumer Reports, and all but one of the top devices in the country are powered by Android. In fact each of the four variants of Samsung’s Galaxy S smartphone received top honors, either solely (Sprint’s Epic 4G, T-Mobile’s Vibrant) or as part of a tie — the Fascinate tied the Motorola DROID X for the No. 1 spot on Verizon Wireless, and Captivate tied the Apple iPhone 4 on AT&T.

    AT&T STINKS

I think I’m more shocked at the fact that people still pay attention to Consumer Reports than I am at these results. Since when does the “average consumer” (majority of BGR readers excluded) know ANYTHING besides the fact that they want free phones, free service, and cell towers built inside of their house, underneath their house and in their back yard.

Seriously, I relate Consumer Reports with 60 Minutes. Whenever I happen to see either of them in the media I just snicker and think “They’re still around?!?”….

Damn – Sprint FTW (not really). Only 1 point behind Big Red. Good for them. Hesse has done wonders for that company. Hope to see them continue in the right direction.

i think most people are generally ignorant when it comes to their cell phones and how they work and whats being charged on their monthly bill. They have all these high expectations where the cell service is magical and will work anywhere. I have been with all the big 4 cell companies and also worked for all for too! So i can honestly say that this review is 100% correct.

Verizon – Best coverage and decent data speed, but the priciest
Sprint – Has had great plans, data speeds equal to big red with more competitive pricing
Tmobile – Had spotty coverage along with ok data, but their plans and prices were the best
AT&T – coverage is a little better than tmobile with drop calls being my number one complaint, prices were between big red and sprint.

The iphone is a great phone overall, it was the game changer when i came to pda phones…too bad its only on a company that can not support its demand…but not for long!

hmm…The difference is in the middle 3 is 5 points, so I call it even. Clearly there is a wide margin of difference between 1 and 4. The notes says something though. The notes say people are looking are considering a phone for what it is a phone vs. ‘the best network’ or ‘the fastest data’ iphone to blackberry to wm to android device. Says to me ‘HEY this is a phone and i like making calls’ vs. ‘This device does everything and its a phone too’.

Of course is the worst according to half iphone users who left slow-rizon for the AT&T and that’s how this stupid carriers war began from jealousy, fanboys will nevers be happy until the iphone lands on their obsolete CDMA network simple as that and remember before the iphone there wasn’t any who has the best coverage, more speed o dropped calls just make a little research all of you……!!!!

i call BS on this report VZW always has issues with MMS this has been the same with AT&T and T-Mobile not only do there messages come in pieces they fail to recieve or send mms properly to other carriers while i have never had issues with users of other networks, and why is US cellular in this survey im sure all there 50 customers are quite satisfied, i do agree that AT&Ts scores might be low due to the iphone people get there service solely because of the phone and live with terrible service because they want to be part of the crowd. Ive talked to so many people that have the iphone “because its the iPhone” seriously WTF does that mean after having one and replacing it 3 times i must say it was boring and a poor smartphone experience. I say they survey people in the same area with the same device i say people with the galaxy s phone in a large area with hspa+ for AT&T and T-Mo, and 4G for sprint and you will see a more accurate depiction on the network itself im sure many people would rate others higher for voice and data at the same time and faster speeds. it wouldn’t be fair for VZW due to no LTE phones but thats the route they chose to go

    “We take this seriously”

No you don’t. You’ve ranked last in Consumer Report for nearly 10 years now. You ranked last BEFORE the break-up and re-formation, before there was Cingular.

As long as their subscription #’s run high, they don’t give 2 craps about any surveys or what Consumer Reports has to say. Which I don’t blame them, but don’t make up smarmy lies like ‘we take this seriously’.

I work all over the US. Not in major cities, but in the middle of no where most of the time. AT&T is the only service provider that works 99% of the time. If it doesn’t work, it’s because there is no cell service in that area. Other people I work with have to drive 20-30 miles from the job site to get phone service with Verizon or Sprint most of the time, or they borrow my phone (Iphone4) and make a call with no problem.

  • Steel

Someone should telly AT&T that people aren’t choosing them, they’re choosing the iPhone and dealing w/ the poor service. That little fact will change as we enter next year.

  • 0zzark Alpha

    This is no surprise.

I love Att tech support and billing. Idk what people complain about. And yes I do have an iPhone and yes I drop calls but same with my vzw friends. And guess what they complain more.

  • VRZNLVR

Because the iphone is not free, I’m voting for Verizon!!!

  • I_h8_att

No wonder AT&T sucks. My iphone 4 fell in a puddle of water and cracked the display so the guys at the warranty at both AT&T and Apple say that’s not covered. Who ever heard of such of thing? You spend $299 and they won’t even replace a defective one. I am a very high end user and the owner of my own business and they do not seem to care. The phone was defective from day one. Can’t wait to leave them coming next year.

The only thing AT&T takes seriously is making money of of you. When will you commit to your dreams and your freedom and better choice in life and not accept the failing status quo??…

This is why ATT ranks so poorly… I have a personal line via a corporate contract with ATT. I also have a personal line via a corporate contract on Sprint. I was looking through my ATT bill and noticed I wasn’t getting the corporate customer discount. I call business customer service and spoke to a rep who advised me they do not apply discounts to unlimited (their very best) plans. WHAT?! I asked him (Josh) if it made any sense to punish a customer for choosing their flagship device (iPhone 4) and most expensive plans? I advised him my premier plan on Sprint was discounted. He said he agreed that it should be, but he could not do anything about the policy. I got his supervisor, Dennis, on the phone and Dennis reiterated the same company line. I asked Dennis if there was anyone else I could talk to since his hands were tied. He told me, “No,” and advised me to fill out a form on the ATT web site. I told him he was an idiot (not in those terms) and he should start looking for a new job, because as soon as ATT loses iPhone exclusivity and Verizon (and any other carrier for that matter) gets the iPhone, subscribers will leave leave ATT in droves because their service is sub-par. When that happens, so will the layoffs. I told him if one of my family members didn’t want the iPhone so badly, I’d terminate the contract immediately. He was content with my dissatisfaction and the call was ended. I’m going to recommend to my corporate purchasing department to get contracts set up with other carriers and possibly drop the one with ATT. I’ll also pay the ETF to get off ATT when Verizon gets the iPhone in 2011.

Companies have their policies in place as well as your company that you WORK for have policies in place, so that should be respected. I am an successful wireless re-seller owner and I can tell you that if someone went over my head because some penny pinching customer whines about pricing and discounts, that person would be fired. Policies are put in place and should not be amended for anyone, that’s how companies stay in business. Does McDonald’s give discounts just because you spent $20 or more on your family twice a week? No. It’s their policy not to give out discounts other than to seniors, and they have been around 60 years. Get my point?

  • Radar

Do people still read Consumer Reports?

  • JT

Now, if at&t could only respond to this with a Better Business Bureau rating to somehow disprove how consumers really feel about their wireless service……Ha!

  • Scottshuff1

Verizon is always rated better than ATT. I don’t understand why ppl even bother staying with them. Look at the 3g map. We have a ton of retards that buy the iPhone with the worst 3g network.

  • Chreeeees

Here’s the deal…At&t is flooded with iPhone users. The majority of the peole they surveyed probably had iPhones…and probably dont have the better service that their Android, RIM, and WP7 users experience. Its no revelation that the iPhone’s have inferior service quality compared to other devices. I personally have seen At&t’s in store experience greatly improved! They have the most devices out of the other providers. I say that Consumer Reports do a survey on Device Manufacturers and then we will see where the real issues are.

  • http://myuserid.myopenid.com/ Your Name

AT&T’s statement is *STILL* trying to claim “we have no problems” and “we are great”.

Everyone in the nationwide survey must just be wrong.l

Wow. Wake up. How many more “worst carrier ever” awards does AT&T have to get… before they get the message????

  • Dex

Guys you need to start posting info that is developed by you and not a reiterations of what one organization reported and then reported by a news paper or posted on other sites two or three days ago.

  • dwinsmith

Surprising considering my experiences with AT&T and T-Mobile have been much better than what I’ve gotten with Verizon or Sprint.

  • Tired of Liars

also the ” Most dishonest Carrier” of them all!
