Research In Motion renaming WES developer conference

Exclusive

We have just heard from multiple sources that Research In Motion will be renaming its popular annual developer conference, the Wireless Enterprise Symposium. In addition to a name change, we’re told that the company will be changing the direction of the conference to better reflect RIM’s current focus on its QNX operating system as well as other developer content. RIM will also be broadening the general scope of the event beyond just enterprise, hence the name change. What’s the new name? That hasn’t been communicated to us yet, but drop your suggestions in the comments.

P.S. Maybe will.i.am, Futurist, has some suggestions?

The enterprise is supposedly who the PlayBook is targeted to.
The enterprise is where RIM has a dominant market share.
    RIM….what are you doing…

They’re seeing where other platforms are succeeding marketing to consumers. They need to balance out consumers/enterprise. It’s smart. The Playbook is not JUST targeted to enterprise.

They already have a developer conference in September that has dwindled to less than 2,000 attendees (developers). WES attracted enterprise customers who were looking for mobility solutions from other alliance members to extend the BB beyond just email and PIM. RIM dominates in the enterprise space and I am confused as to why they would broaden their focus of the event.

True but they want to appeal to a larger group. They are still in contention with Apple, Google, and even Microsoft now. Also, while Apple and Google are looking to expand where they are lacking (enterprise), CEOs will look at other platforms than BB.

Around the time their Storm 1 was coming out their stock went through the roof. There is a desire for play in the workfield too. I hope RIM succeeds in appealing to both sides of the spectrum.

        Cameron,

Since I can’t see the Reply button on your post, I’ll reply here……

You raise a good point – the line between ‘consumer’ and ‘business’ is blurring. So do you take the route of Apple and build a device to appeal to the consumer first and then add the ‘enterprise’ features/security later? Obviously RIM is doing the opposite – we’ll see how it turns out for them. I’m pulling for RIM as much as anyone else is but I have scratched my head over a number of decisions they have made over the past 6 months.

really? Dwindled less than 2000 attendees?! Did you realize the last conference in September – the debut of the QNX OS on PlayBook was a PACKED house?!

    Rim Job?

  • well actually…

I am so sick of fandroids and apple fan boys bashing blackberrys. I’ve had the iPhone 4 and G2 and went back to my bold 9700 twice. Now i have the 9780 and I am very happy with it. Its productive which i like and Blackberry 6 brings major improvements. When Blackberry 6 reaches a full 4 inch screen it will be amazing. I want a phone that can last on one charge for 2-3 days of heavy use. I want a phone that can FIT in my pocket. I send texts on android and iOS and it is very delayed as so with e-mail. The software has many flaws which i havent seen on Blackberry in the 4 years I’ve been with them. Its all about what phone is best for a user and remeber, most people are still using and upgrading to Blackberrys dispite android and iOS. The browser on Blackberry 6 surpasses android and ranks up with the iPhones. I know Blackberry will improve more and more; softwares up to date, camera is at standard 5 MP, and user experence is better. Now all they need to do is release touchscreen form factors in the 3.7-4 inch range with these improvements. And hey, the playbook’s features and software are killing the galaxy tab and the ipad and its not even out yet.

You make very valid points. My only retort is to your last one. The BlackBerry Playbook feature set and software is indeed impressive, but like you said, it’s not even out yet. By the time this tablet hits the market, you’ll have the iPad 2 on shelves, Windows 7 tablets and hopefully an Android OS designed for the bigger screens as well and I’m not so confident that the Playbook will shine as bright in lieu of all that competition.

      • well actually..

I know what your saying but as RIM stated its still in production and things could change.. The ipads UI is most likely not and android, even on gingerbread is still going to be similar while the playbooks UI looks amazing right now and totally different than prvious blackberry software for being in the works. The Playbooks has both a 3.2 and a 5 MP camera which i doubt ethier android or apple is going to exceed. The playbooks a fast little device and much more portable. RIM is SLOWLY moving into a consumer world and in sometime will be back at the top again. Blackberry still appeals to many age groups becasue of BBM and actual push email

Had an Iphone 3GS for 11 months and switched to a BB Bold 9650. I’ll take my Blackberry any day over the Iphone. I too can make it two days on one charge, gets great reception, and I have a great plan with Sprint. I love Mac Computers, but the Iphone was over-hyped in my opinion. The Blackberry is the most dependable device I’ve ever had.
I’m looking forward to the Playbook when it comes out.
