Microsoft employees begin receiving free Windows Phones

mobile

Back in October, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed that the company would be handing out free Windows Phones to each of its 89,000 employees. The generous and expensive gesture from Microsoft was seen as a great publicity move, of course, but now it’s time to pay the piper. Microsoft employees in some regions have begun receiving their free devices and, as expected, they’re being quite vocal with their excitement. Among the first to receive their free phones, each of Microsoft’s 1,200 employees in the Netherlands have been given a Samsung Omnia 7. Employees seem quite pleased with the device so far, which features a 4-inch Super-AMOLED display, a 5-megapixel camera with HD video capture support and a 1GHz processor. 1,200 down, 87,800 to go.

Good for them, it’s the best way to get the WP Market Place rolling.

MS isn’t alone; AT&T and Amazon are also giving away WP7 phones.

      On contract.

Was it not said when this was announced that a contract would be required and these were not exactly “free phones”?

I just got the LG quantum for my wife.
I’m really impressed with the phone.
It may not have quite the polish iOS or android has but for a New OS it’s really good.
People should give it a chance. Just because it’s Microsoft doesn’t mean it’s bad.
At least when an update is available she wont have to wait for LG to fix it for some stupid UI overlay. Phone makers can’t mess jack the UI up on windows phones.

This is great. Good for Microsoft. I’m glad they realize that this is a really good idea for pushing WP7. And aside from that, isn’t their pie share like 500 mil for WP7 advertising and promotion? If you value every device they give out at $150 (higher than cost, I’m sure), they are giving away $13,350,000 worth of hardware here. That’s a REALLY small share of their total capital they originally dedicated to marketing. Not a bad decision for MS here, and who wouldn’t want some free goodies from the company they work for? I’d be a happy camper if I worked for Microsoft right now.

I have yet to hear from BGR if the HTC WP7 has the death grip issue. I’ve read elsewhere it does.

Giving them away for free is one way to get people to use them.

Nice to see that MS is trying to push up the number ratings by giving away 89,000 phones to employees. They should have sent one to me and the wife to use. That would be viewed as a nice gesture huh MS?

Considering so many people got burned with M$’s crappy millennium and vista OS’s Ballmer should be giving away millions of free phones. Maybe then people will stop calling him monkey boy.
