Gartner names Samsung top Android provider in States, 3M Galaxy S handsets shipped in U.S.

Samsung has just issued a press release pertaining to kudos it recently received from analytics firm Gartner. Gartner has named Samsung the top Android provider in the United States based on “sell through to end users in [...] the third quarter of 2010.” Samsung earned the honors based on its 32.1% share of the U.S. Android market in Q3 and having shipped over 3 million total Galaxy S handsets in the States.

“I want to personally thank everyone who selected a Galaxy S smartphone as their mobile handset of choice,” said Samsung’s president of Mobile, Dale Sohn. ”Neither of these wonderful accomplishments would have been possible without the loyalty and support of our customers.”

A good news day for Samsung it seems! Their multi-carrier approach has obviously worked wonders.

    Kudos to them.

With so many devices out there, then why DON’T you do a BETTER job of UPDATING and SUPPORTING all these customers? Why is the Galaxy S still on 2.1?

    • Supermartin73

      Mine is on Froyo

      • Guyverv

Shouldn’t have to flash to get it…even though I did (cognition rom)

The update is dependent on when the carrier will release it.

      • Donny

That is not entirely true. By each manufacture putting their own spin on Android they must also ensure the OS works with the device as well as the carriers bloatware demands and cripples (read: touchwiz with bing).

That seems to be the case here.. alsoT-Mobile has to modify 2.2 to support WiFi calling. Add in their own stuff.. the Vibrant is customized to T-Mobile’s liking just like the Captivate, Fascinate, and Epic – they ALL have dramatic software differences considering they’re the “same” phone. That said I have a leaked version of 2.2 on my Vibrant and it’s running very good.

If they give you an update you won’t buy a new phone as often. A company survives because you buy their products, not because they provide free services to you after the fact.

This is the problem with the Windows approach to mobile. Manufacturers only make money on hardware so their is little incentive to give you free updates because those updates cost the manufacturers money to design and port. They are going to be struggling on the profit side because they have to deal with other manufacturers also selling Android devices.

  • Guyverv

will this be more or less motivation to push out timely updates?

    • Anonymous

If by update you mean supplying you with a new phone with the latest Android OS then yes. Samsung is a business and needs to sell you hardware. They could careless about your desire to have the latest version of Android ported to your particular device.

The sooner you all realize that Android is not what makes the manufacturer money the better. Your decision to constantly buy the latest and greatest (every couple months) Android device will keep the manufacturers building new phones, not porting new versions of Android for you.

      • Donny

The two year contract model will have to die for Android to continue the way it currently does. Not everyone goes out every two months to buy whatever Verizon releases as the new DROID on the block. Also, hardly anyone roots their phone to get the newest update (obviously not talking about people on here).

Since Android has only been popular since last fall when the first DROID was released by Verizon it will be interesting to see how the general public starts seeing apps no longer working with whatever OS version they have or why they no longer have support for unresolved issues with whatever OS their manufacture and carrier decided to maroon them with….especially only a year into their contract.

Well, if the reports of a Verizon iPhone are true (this time anyway) and in two months that device is released then we will actually see a shlt ton of Android users buying new phones, iPhones. The lines that will appear are going to make every Apple hater on the net sick. Of course, those will just be the same Apple users from At&t buying another Apple product with a new contract.

If you give any credit to people on the internet you know that there are only 230 people that buy Apple products in the entire world and we all show up to every store opening to make it appear that their are more. Not only that but everyday we spend countless hours buying Apple products and hooking them up to the internet to make it appear that Apple is the largest and largest growing tech company on earth.

The Iphone and Android will just co-exist. The world out there is very unique. Each person is very unique. My wife love her Iphone very much just like any Iphone fanboy out there. I love my Nexus One because I use google and love it being native to Android and so with my tethering open without having to root, etc. AT&T is selling Iphone 4′s (the best Iphone) and some crappy to middle-end androids, but not all AT&T customers use the Iphone. My friend had the crappy motorola back flip from AT&T, hated it and exchanged it for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 (still on AT&T) and she loves it to death. I asked her, you are already in AT&T why not the Iphone and she replied “It’s not my thing”.
The Android is a good competition for the Iphone to be great. And the Android community is working hard to compete with the Iphone. In the end, the consumers gets the benefits. So just relax, and let the world unveil itself. The best is yet to come.

Can you imagine the % on Froyo when Samsung rolls it out? Probably will be close to 75%.

  • Jeremiah

I was absolutely surprised that HTC didn’t get the most shipped, considering they have the most models of Androids devices out there (seemingly), but then I read “devices shipped in 3Q 2010″ and remembered all the free or cheap deals on the Vibrant, Captivate, and Fascinate.

  • Anonymous

People seem to like cheap, hence Android’s appeal. Samsung has the look, feel and touch of cheap. So of course Samsung (cheap) would be the largest supplier of Android (cheap also) devices.

This is rocket science kids.Funny though, the largest supplier of Android phones is shipping about 20% of what Apple ships iPhones, if that much.

“Android has peaked” Windows Phone 2007 proves that.

25% of Android users say they will buy another Android device. Why else would every Android phone manufacturer be shipping Windows Phone 2007?
Now 75% of Android users are going to buy one of two devices. 66% of those will buy the iPhone as soon as it is available on Verizon or their contracts are up, which ever comes first. The other 33% will buy something else out of hatred for Apple.

    So again, “Android has peaked.”

Lol Apple fans always will look at android this way.
Apple phones will go the way of apple computers… From domination, to around 10 percent of the market.

      Its inevitable

      • Anonymous

Keep telling yourself that, clearly it got you to sleep last night. It won’t be too long before you are using Apple gear. Whether at work, home or on the road.

        It is inevitable

      • Kusgan

Somebody here had nightmare last night of the Green Robot taking over the world…

      • Anonymous

I would rather use an old RAZR than an Iphone… But thanks… :-)

    • LarrytheLOL

Oh wait. You’re serious, let me laugh even harder!

      • Anonymous

Laugh, cry, hop, skip, jump….. whatever it is you need to do. 2011 will see Apple sell $100 Billion plus in gear. Their numbers:

        2009 $46 billion (roughly)
        2010 $65 billion (roughly)
        2011 $100 billion (plus)

There is no company with this sort of growth. Hell, there isn’t any two companies combined (of this size) with this sort of growth.

When you get to the point of it, enjoy using your Apple products. Whether it be work, home or on the road you will be using Apple technology before you know it.

      • Kusgan

TheNewReign, who is asking here of those numbers? Why are you defending the Iphone? Was the article above attacking Steve Jobs?

    • Kusgan

Does the article mentioned anything of the iphone? TheNewReign, you seem like trouble and threatened. Why? Tell me your fears……

  • LarrytheBing

I’m glad for Samsung. The Galaxy S is a great device, but I do hope that out of those 3 Million phones, most were on carriers other than Verizon. The reason, Verizon decided to ruin the Galaxy S by making Bing the default search engine, one you can’t change without rooting your phone, thereby voiding your warranty. Maybe if Sammy sees that its T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint models are far outselling its Verizon model, they will think twice the next time about letting Verizon force customers to use Bing.

    • Anonymous

Samsung doesn’t care why people are buying their phones (or any of their products), what Samsung cares about is that people are buying their products. If they were worried about user experience you would all be using 2.2 right now and 2.3 soon after it becomes available. Your Software experience is in no way Samsung’s main concern.

  • Scott

Well seeing how there are GPS problems, issues in the beginning not booting into recovery, the “lag” fix, and the fact that 2.2 “should” have been out a while ago, I feel that Samsung is going to lose customers if they don’t step their game up. These are reason why I returned my Captivate and am patiently waiting for the Moto Olympus.

  • Anonymous

Samsung? Really? I’m disappointed. Then again, the Motorola Droid seems to have the best track record of phones actually keeping up with the latest updates.

Every phone that isn’t called “Nexus One” should be ashamed of themselves for how long they make us wait for these updates. I sincerely can’t wait for whatever update makes all their skins irrelevant… because they’ll probably never update to it.

  • Junkme Now000

Too bad their support sucks ass. Coming from an iPhone, didn’t realize how spoiled I was with Apple support

  • Dream

Yea u donnot have to root the Fascinate to get google search All you do is DL Lancher Pro Install the Google enhance search Widget and Bam problem solved, How do i know this B/C ive done it on my and it works perfectl Ps it seams to fix alot of lag as a by effect hmmmm

  • Sean76

    yea with no 2.2! Awesome…

  • Anonymous

No surprise at all. Other manufacturers were having production issues due to component shortages. Samsung makes most of its own components thus didn’t experience the same problems HTC and Motorola did. Majority of sales came from Sprint where the HTC EVO was on backorder for a spell.
