BlackBerry Bold 9780 Pearl White hands-on

mobile

Our No. 1 UK ninja just hooked us up with an unbranded OEM BlackBerry Bold 9780 in Pearl White, and we wanted to give you guys a detailed look at it.

  • For starters, the device is visually identical to the BlackBerry Bold 9700 in white. While the black Bold 9780 traded in the chrome bezel for a glossy black bezel, the white version of the handset still sports the chrome bezel and metallic white paint job (Pearl White, as RIM likes to call it).
  • We would have loved a solid white finish on here, as it would look a bit more high-end as opposed to this glitter-laced white — oh well.
  • As far as the backlight is concerned, you might remember we had serious issues with the BlackBerry Torch 9800 in Pure White — we couldn’t use the device as a daily driver due to the fact that the cutouts for the keyboard backlight made the passing light look “blurry” to us. Thankfully, the 9780 is better. There is still an issue, however, and that’s the fact that there does not seem to be a backing to the keyboard like the black version has. RIM opted to simply leave the cutout letters and symbols bare, and this makes for a really poor and uneven lighting situation. Is it usable? Definitely. It’s just not perfect, and we kind of feel like it should be.
  • The soft-touch mid-plate of the 9780 is a shade of medium gray as opposed to black on theĀ  Pearl White version. You know what’s even better than medium grey on a white handset? White.

Head on over to our Pearl White BlackBerry Bold 9780 hands-on gallery for some more shots.

        This comment…not so much.

Yes, it CAN do all of those things but much more slowly and on a much smaller screen. People have their own issues as to why they do not like Blackberry. Mine is personal having owned 4 of them. In my opinion RIM is saving a TON by “recycling” their hardware and form factor. In turn cutting costs for them and ultimately cheating the customer. Now, how this is even being masqueraded as a story is beyond me. You can find a white Housing unit on Ebay for $15. Why are we writing about this??

      • Oye Consolte!

I found your comment rather amusing.

So, you want a phone that does things which you can’t get anywhere else, right? Yeah makes sense. I bet you would LOVE for it to turn into a girl, too.

Too many haters on berry’s. I tried to switch.. Went to a droid, then a droid pro.. They suck when it comes to messaging. If your a kid get a droid.. if you want a professional phone that just works get a berry.

You know a year ago everyone around our conference table has Blackberry’s. Now theres an iPhone, Androids and Windows Phone, not all professionals are so closed minded fella.

      • RealDeal

It’s hard to argue against the fact the BlackBerry is still the best communications smartphone out there. It may be missing some bells and whistles in the form of apps, browser and hardware specs. But no one does messaging and enterprise sync better.

Can Blackberry focus more so on coming out with a different device than worrying about the color of the same phone just different features and model?? SMH….

When Apple does this you guys all cry out.

  • Which way is Up?

BB’s are great little phones, they allow me to stay connected with my and colleagues and friends and it does this quite well. I can only stand using a few apps, mostly FB and Twitter-those work well on the small screen and that’s it.

RIM has to understand that the majority of their customers which own these phones want more from their BB device. The web browsing sucks (everyone I know wants a better internet experience) and the screen is just too small in today’s day and age-even if it were a touch screen (Palm Treo Pro/850, looking at you kid…)

It is what it is, a phone that handles the basics, calling, texting and email. If you’re looking for anything else, look elsewhere…

    • Blackberry Luver

i agree with you in every aspect…i use my BB for business as well as personal use. My internet browing is horrible but i can say the BB storm 1&2 have made it a little more exiting. I would like to see BB come out with a 4.3 inch screen for their BB along with an awsome wed browser…..

Well, at least one manufacturer can make a device in white…

  • Chellykay

This is a super sexy looking phone. I just wish they would take all the good things about each blackberry model and put them all into one awesome phone!!! The Curve has the best keyboard by far, the Bold has the sexiest look, and the Torch has a bigger screen that is also touch and has the highest resolution camera with flash. They can call it The Blackberry Awesome :)
