MetroPCS 4G LTE network now live in San Francisco

General

Despite being slightly overshadowed by a certain announcement from Verizon Wireless, MetroPCS announced Wednesday the launch of its “4G” LTE network in San Francisco and the surrounding areas. San Francisco joins Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Detroit and Dallas-Forth Worth in the growing list of markets now covered by MetroPCS’ LTE network. MetroPCS plans to expand its 4G services to cover Atlanta, Boston, Jacksonville, Miami, New York, Orlando, Sacramento and Tampa between during the course of December and early 2011. Currently, MetroPCS only has one LTE-compatible cell phone available — the Samsung Craft, which is available for $299 with no contract. The carrier also has two available 4G service plans: a $55 “4G” plan, which includes unlimited nationwide calling, text messaging, picture messaging and 4G data; and a $60 “4G Premium” plan, which adds unlimited on demand video.

      Here’s another wake-up call.

It’s now March 2011. They now have the Samsung Indulge, which is an LTE (4G) phone, 3.5″ display, slider keyboard, for $400. Runs FroYo with Adobe Flash.

Unlimited 4G is $60, fees and taxes included.

I am paying $160, fees and taxes included, unlimited, on T-Mobile. So I am seriously looking at MetroPCS now. Only think stopping me before was they had horrible phones.

This 4G phone with Android makes it far more interesting.

Having never heard of this company I wonder if it is merely piggy backing on Verizon’s network and thus those LTE locations are really just Verizon’s areas that have been fully setup. Meaning that in a few days when VZ launches in all its new areas, MetroPCS will follow suite right after, obviously depending on their agreement.

This is all just my thinking out loud.

they own their LTE signals and piggy back off sprints nationwide in areas where they don’t

Since there isn’t an industry wide standard that defines 4G they could have called it 5g or 6g
simply referring to it as 4G just means 4th iteration of cell service. no min upload or dowmload speed thats acknowledged industry wide.
they can boast all they want but the proof will be it the throughput of data and what actual usage reveals.

Does a t mobile and Metro PCS merger sound possible? everything seems to be lining up for something like that to occur….Metro is build their LTE network. T mobile is expanding their netowrk footprint and backhaul. This seems like a merger that could possibly work well…
