Winamp 5.6 gets official, improves Android support and adds wireless music synchronization

Software

Today, Winamp announced a new, desktop version of its popular music management software, Winamp 5.6. When paired with Winamp for Android, the company boasts that its software is a “complete end-to-end music management solution for your desktop and Android device.” As the press release explains:

Winamp 5.6 features a new device management interface that supports wireless syncing of media, simple management of multiple connected devices and faster encoding and transferring of media to your devices over USB or WiFi. Stream media from a connected device without the need of transferring media to the local library. Wireless device syncing and streaming only available with Winamp for Android installed.

If you have an Android device, a Windows-based PC, and no particular allegiance to a media player, give the Winamp system a shot. After all, it really whips the llamas ass.

Why doesn’t Google just buy Doubletwist already? Surely Jon can be had for a few Billion. As bright as that bunch is you would think that they would have their iTunes clone out the door already. Apple already has 200 of it’s 500 million iTunes users account vetted. Google keeps waiting and they will have another 100 million buying from iTunes.

Just like businesses aren’t ready to spend billions retooling the Windows networks to OS X. Consumers are not going to give up their already purchased media library for another media repository service. Not going to happen.

I have winamp on my Droid X and I’m a big fan. I got it for nostalgia reasons but turns out, it’s a legit music player. Good thing too, the llama had it coming.

Anyone know of a better sync with apple to android. Double twist is pretty good.

is there any way to seamlessly import my itunes metadata, and playlists into winamp? that is by far the biggest impediment to my using it.

Hmm, that’s nice. Too bad Winamp hasnt had a major version upgrade, or an interface ovdrhaul, in at least 6 years. The Winamp app for Android, on the other hand is very nice, as far free players go. But it just can’t hold a candle to PowerAMP. Doubletwist on my PC handles syncing iTunes playlists, and PowerAMP takes it from there for me. It’s gonna take something spectacular to make me switch to anything else at this point.

I’ve had some major battery drainage issues with the Winamp app on my Galaxy S.
Has the app been updated along with the desktop program?
If not I’d advise against it.

Only me that can’t search for tracks in this version? Pressing “J” which always have worked to search doesn’t seem to work now. Great!
