Sony sells more than 4.1 million PlayStation Move controllers in 2 months

Gaming

Sony announced Tuesday that it sold more than 4.1 million PlayStation Move controllers worldwide in the product’s first 2 months of availability. The news comes just one day after Microsoft announced it had sold over 2.5 million Kinect sensors in less than a month. Sony’s PlayStation Move controller is positioned between Nintendo’s Wii controllers and the Microsoft Kinect sensor bar. Sony’s system uses physical controllers like the Wii, and it allows for very precise game control. Like the Kinect, however, it also uses a camera system to track players’ movements. Many gamers have said that the balance between the two technologies provides a better overall gaming experience, though Sony’s sales pace does fall short of the less precise Kinect. Sony’s figures also include multiple controllers purchased for a single PlayStation 3, while Xbox 360 users only need one Kinect unit per console. Hit the break for Sony’s press release.

Is this sold or shipped? Other reports have this as shipped which would definitely not mean as much.

You sir win the prize! That’s how many they shipped not sold.

Yep these are the shipped figures. The Kinect figures that came out recently are actual Sales figures. So there are 2.5 million Kinects sold and in people homes. We have no idea how many Moves were sold… but Sony made a valiant attempt in spinning this around to trick people.

From what I have read, about 2 million Moves were sold Worldwide.

The chick in that picture is holding that thing like nobody’s business! She has experience holding something like that I see… ;)

    I bet that sucker vibrates!

I was going to say that I have a name for the Move controller that is not appropriate for a public blog like this.

Another fail by BGR, that 4.1 Million is shipped to retailers, not sold to end-users. Better post some more Apple news to keep your legion happy.

Is it just me or do the actions of those two look like they have nothing to do with the actual game on the screen.

It looks like a RTS game or something…

I think they’re just beating the sh!t out of each other, and not paying attention to what’s on the screen…

No reason for despair. I have 1 Move bundle already and I am waiting to get closer to Christmas to get 3-4 additional controllers. If there is a good % of people in the same situation, Sony will have a good holiday season.

Considering ‘sold’ to any manufacturer means ‘shipped to retail’ and that Move controller sales are not a 1:1 unique user relationship as Kinect is…

Move probably has around 1.5m unique user sold attach rate while Kinect (again considering 2.5 was shipped) is about the same, around 1.5m.

Still no where near Wii’s nearly 75m worldwide sales rate or even its 20m plus attach rate for its Motion Plus adapter for the Wiimote.

What are they playing? Command & Conquer?

  • Crowc02

LOL, they r playing StarCraft. i thought it only came out for N64 and PC

I’m impress on how precise the playstations move is. It’s really fun but tiring. Especially the sports champion game, that game can get you tired on the arms and shoulders if you play for a while.

Wow bgr don’t you guys check facts? these are not actual sales to consumers, they are sales to retailers so please let’s get some fact checking before you post and if you do post why not make an update on the article please?

A little press release from none other than Sony informed us this morning that the company has shipped 4.1 million PlayStation Move controllers worldwide. Alas, that number has been widely misreported as the tally of direct end-user sales, which it most definitely is not. What Sony’s letting us know is total wands that have left its warehouses on their way to retailers, a number that’s one step removed from actual sales results. Still, if you simply must have something to compare against Microsoft’s 2.5 million Kinect sales, there you have it.

Update: Our brothers at Joystiq have reached out to Sony and confirmed that these numbers represent shipped units, not consumer sales. Here’s Joystiq’s exact wording on the (seemingly purposefully) confusing situation:
A Sony representative explained that the 4.1 million actually represents Move units shipped to stores, adding “While we don’t disclose our exact sell-through number, the key is that our retailers continue to ask for more Move units and are taking every unit we can supply them with based on their sales.” Which, you know, would have been a cool thing to put in that press release, we think.

Update 2: We’ve also confirmed with Sony that the sales numbers are in reference to retailers, not consumers, and learned that more than 75 percent of the sales in the US are bundles — meaning new console sales or software groupings.
