Sprint launches WiMAX network in six additional cities

General

Early this morning, U.S. Wireless carrier Sprint announced it has blanketed Los Angeles, Miami, Washington D.C., Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio with its WiMAX network. “With the addition of these six markets, Sprint 4G is now available in 68 markets across the country, including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and New York City,” reads the press release. Sprint also announced “that it expects to launch the San Francisco market – home to Silicon Valley and thousands of tech enthusiasts – on Dec. 28.” If you’re located in any of the aforementioned cities, and have a Sprint 4G enabled device, let us know what kind of speeds you’re seeing.

    Hello…How about Denver

  • Donny

Can you get unlimited data with one of their mobile hotspots?

    Sacramento, DO IT!

  • MistyEyes

I visited a friend in Sac two weeks ago and got 4.1Mbps. Then visited my son in Austin last week and got 4.7Mbsp. Not too shabby at all.

Yes, it’s an additional $30 a month for a hotspot.

Just tried out my Evo in the dc suburbs of Maryland and I am getting 5-6 MB’s down!! :-)

Columbus has had coverage for months but spotty…. Coverage has increased over the months but it’s not total coverage. I drop 4g all over three columbus area.
I was downtown columbus and had 4g and drove near the ohio statehouse and lost 4g. I entered the statehouse and still no 4g. Hopefully they keep adding towers to bolster coverage.

Agreed that “blanketed” is hardly an accurate description of Columbus coverage. My office sits one block north of the center of downtown, yet no 4g coverage here. Nor do I have it at my home on the north side of town. That said, last Friday afternoon I had appointments in an area of Columbus where 4G is available, and I was able to watch the Auburn-Alabama game on CBS’s website as if I were watching a miniature TV. Not one hiccup in reception of the live video. Simply amazing!

Sprint must have activated a new tower in downtown Columbus last night, as all of the sudden I can sit in my office a block north of the central part of downtown and realize speeds of 5.49 down and .98 up, eclipsing my desktop DSL speeds!

I drop 4Gs almost every night in Columbus, but that’s what it costs to live like a king.

They have a ways to go but I’m impressed with So Cal. This is the most spread out Metro area and coverage is almost continous from San Bernardino to Santa Monica, That’s about 75 miles on the 10 fwy. Just off the top of my head I’ve got coverage in Santa Ana Anahiem Santa Monica La Hollywood El Monte San Bernardino Ontario Rancho Cucamonga Glendora, I pulled down 9mps in Upland. Haven’t tried too much OC, Pasadena, or San Fernando Valley and Riverside only has tiny areas. Even tho I would say the area is only about a third done I was actually impressed because with what’s done here they could easily cover 2 or 3 other metros. If you have an Evo its great to have but I wouldn’t reccomend a modem yet unless you can confirm solid coverage at home and work.

Anyone who lives in so cal (or anywhere really) and is wondering about coverage download sensorly. They have a pretty good app that has coverage maps.

CLEAR is not very from Irvine Spectrum South and East. HSPA+ from AT&T is live down there with 3-6Mbps actual. T-Mo is also down there and is even faster and $20/mo less, but you have to pay them upfront for their USB dongle and their dongle doesn’t work in places like Mammoth and along the freeway to Vegas and soon AT&T will have it’s backhaul upgraded and squash T-Mo like a bug, so it’s a giant PITA (cue army of disenfranchised cell phone sales people who are alienated from AT&T by the combination of most sales commissions lost to iPhone and iPhone being exclusive to AT&T and their shop not being authorized to sell iPhone). BTW, CLEAR has reportedly just laid off 15% of its workforce, all of Sprint’s people resigned from its board and their one-time backers are all talkin’ about jumping to LTE instead of WiMax or WiMax2. Now, can I please have up to two hundred bucks and two years of your life in exchange for that WiMax service and a cheap Taiwan or South Korean cell phone with software that lets Google profile you? How about just two pennies and two years? lol…

Proof read the first half of your post makes no sense. I’m guessing you were saying that AT&T and Tmobile are better than Sprint.. Who uses AT&T and Tmobile in So Cal?? Coverage is worse than New York, everyone I know with an iPhone is waiting for VZW to pick it up. Mammoth and Vegas your kidding me right good look getting voice coverage in those area…

Are you part of Clear’s workforce? So what does them laying people off have to do with my comment? Really what does any of your comment have to do with mine? The board members left for business reasons try reading articles and not headlines. And Clear is the one interested in LTE not Sprint or anyone else. And who cares if they go LTE? It’s still an OFDM based signal on the same frequency YOU COULDNT EVEN TELL THE DIFFERENCE. And Sprint is way cheaper than Tmo I have unl mins to all cellphones, unl data, text, picturemail, gps, sprint tv and 450 landline mins with nights at 7..

Id rather have my Epic 4G and be profiled than be forced to go thru Apple.. and buddy all cell phones even Apples are made in the area

“Who uses AT&T and Tmobile in So Cal??” Apparently millions of people lol.

I’ve been sporting 4G off and on in Columbus for a few weeks now, I’ll be really happy though if it gets to the point where I can send an MMS while on 4G or when I can stop having to turn the 4G on and off every time I want to use my wireless network at home since it keeps telling me I have to turn off WiFi to use 4G.

    Stock Epic

lol i can see my apartment!

7 mbps down 1 mbps up here in cincinnati, pretty consistent.

  • Jgunter

St. Louis, MO – Evo 4G – 9.2/Mbps down & 1.1/Mbps up. These are average numbers I have recorded when running several speed tests when out and about in St. Louis.
