AT&T: Motorola Olympus to launch in December/January? [Updated]

General

According to whomever is operating the AT&T Share Facebook page, the Motorola Olympus — a dual-core, Tegra 2, Android handset — is due to be release in the very near future. One of our faithful readers pinged AT&T on Facebook inquiring as to when the beast of a handset would be released on Ma’ Bell. The company’s response was rather surprising: “The Motorola Olympus should be available in December or January.” That is the first public acknowledgement of the device’s existence by the nation’s second largest wireless carrier.

As we don’t have to explain to any Android fan currently with AT&T, the company has yet to bring a true, flagship, Android handset to market. Hopefully, with the release of the Olympus, Ma’ Bell can eradicate that not-so-stellar factoid. We’ve reached out to AT&T for comment and will update this post with any additional information provided. What do you think?

Thanks, Scott!

UPDATE: We’re not sure what this means, but AT&T has deleted the response from its Facebook page.

UPDATE 2: Here is AT&T’s official statement regarding the posting: “This response was posted erroneously. We don’t have any information to share about upcoming devices.”

Is the Samsung Captivate/Galaxy S not considered a flagship device? And why not?

My opinion would be no based on the way the device performed and was marketed.

Totally agree – there was very little marketing and you can easily find it for less than $199 after rebate now. Last time I checked, a flagship phone (with the exception of the Droid 2 price drop because of the Global version) keeps its price point until it gets replaced/EOL.

Because the iPhone holds that title and AT&T is going to sell as many of those until their exclusivity ends.

Eh! My Galaxy S is pretty damn good…except for the GPS and 2.1. Well, 2.1 isn’t really a problem because of custom roms (Cognition ftw.) But we are never gonna get gingerbread unless the rom can be ported from the Nexus S.

Your not going to get gingbread!!! oh no! did you run as fast as you can?

After the way Motorola handled the 2.2 Droid X issues, I will never buy any of their products every again.

What issues did you have with the DX?

Thanks Andrew for posting my tip. I can not wait for this phone. And yes, it is deleted from facebook.

F THIS!!! DROID is not coming to At&t. It’s just not. At&t pulled it because it was blatantly false. VZW and DROID go together perfectly and it’s gonna stay that way. Sorry guys.

    • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

You do know the “DROID” branding is a marketing campaign deal by Verizon, right? So yes, you’re right, there’s no way a “Droid” will make it to AT&T since it’s a creation of Verizon.

But as for why they pulled it, your guess is as good as mine.

Android phones have been available on AT&T for a while now. They just haven’t been high-end until the Galaxy S Captivate. I’m sure more high-end devices including this one are coming to ATT. “Droid” is just what Verizon calls their high-end Android phones. Android isn’t an exclusive operating system to anyone.

Is Motorola worried about cannibalizing sales on their current AT&T Android lineup?

Because if that’s the case, they have nothing to worry about. When you put out crap Android devices (or crap devices in general of any OS) it tends to not work out too well. Backflip, Charm, is there anything with 1 Ghz from Moto on AT&T?

Just give people who love Android on AT&T something to brag to their friends about. I think most can agree that the best Android devices are between:
    Evo/Epic
    Droid2/DroidX
Maybe G2? I haven’t gotten to play with one… and there’s virtually no T-Mobile presence in my area so I can’t really comment.

But seriously, AWESOME Android phones have been out for-EVER, and you can’t give ONE little clue to satisfy those who actually stayed with AT&T? I say this because I left AT&T for the EVO since I gave up hope that AT&T would embrace Android seriously.

    • Scott

I understand exactly what you’re saying. I almost left AT&T for the EVO, except, I don’t get a corporate discount with them and they STILL don’t have plans for 4G here in Phoenix, which is just unacceptable for the 5th biggest US city. I’ve liked my iPhone, but I’m ready for something different, and the Captivate just wasn’t it. I really hope this phone turns out as good as it’s expected to be.

I’ve got my fingers crossed for ya Scott. I try to let everyone I know on AT&T about upcoming phones that might be awesome.

I’m happy with Sprint though, even though I’m not in a 4G market. Why? Their customer service has been much better overall than AT&T and the prices are lower.

I had a discount with AT&T, but even without one on Sprint, I’m paying less than $10 more for getting more services – unlimited calling to any mobile as an example, as well as free calling after 7 pm instead of 9.
