Apple iPad 2 to feature Retina Display, USB port?

Tablets

DigiTimes is hit or miss and while we’re inclined to think there are some misses in its latest report on Apple’s upcoming iPad 2, there are also some hits — or safe bets, at least. Citing an unconfirmed report in a Chinese newspaper, DigiTimes lists five key new features that Apple’s upcoming iPad sequel will supposedly tout:

•Retina Display
•Front-facing camera for FaceTime video chat
•A thinner glass panel for a lighter build
•A USB port
•A 3-axis gyroscope

Aside from the USB port, the paper’s claims sound reasonable. We’re not saying it’s impossible that Apple would add a standard USB port to the iPad, but we definitely give it a likelihood rating of 1 on a scale to 10 for the time being.

And this is why I held off on buying the first iPad. In reality… it really kind of sucks.

I think it’s too soon for retina on the iPad… Not complaints or competition pushing the res game yet… Unlike on the iPhone where 480×320 was quite poor vs the 800×480 of the Androids

Retina displays are those that beam images into the retina and have been suggested for cell phones and are being developed by some Japanese companies. This ‘Retina display’ that Apple has coined is nothing more than a higher resolution screen than before.
I’m severely disappointed that it’s not what science fiction and real science has been pushing and instead some marketing word theft on Apple’s part…

    • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

I love people like you that absolutely hate Apple… We are part of a brothering of Goofans (aka Apple Haters.) Even though every company does the same things we accuse Apple of, just the fact Apple’s so bad as a company (they don’t have a single engineer) we MUST, for our own survival and validation hate them profusely. Love you brother. Long live Goofan (aka Apple Haters); without a doubt the smartest people on the planet.

You read into what I say what your personal bias sees. I never said I hate Apple; I distrust them. I do admire their marketing prowess. It is capable of redefining a term that was already in use for years by the engineering and science community to suit it’s own needs. They are so good at this they have created a Star Wars like cult of followers willing to pay any price and wait for days in line just to get their hands on the sacred Apple products.
That is an amazing ability Apple has and kudos for them.
I do distrust Apple from years of seeing them make certain claims to being first and seeing other smaller companies had actually been there first. It’s nothing new. IBM, ATT Microsoft all guilty of these things. Microsoft stole DOS from a small time programmer.
I am a still a bit ashamed at how Jobs treated Woz. Without his creation of the Apple and Apple ][ there would be no Apple Corp and the microcomputer days would probably been delayed for years longer without that Apple ][.
I've been following Apple since 1977 when Ii was making my first computer purchase and reading Popular Electronics. You can say my relationship with Apple is a complex love-hate one.

Thanks for the name calling. Goofan is a new one for me. Hello Fanboy!

      • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

I distrust them, I HATE THEM. Only Google is good! I am proud to be a Goofan. Apple’s the only company us Goofans (aka Apple Haters) hate with tremendous passion. I know, I know, every other company is like Apple (maybe not as good! Ooops, did I say that?) but our hatred for Apple is FUN. I wouldn’t even TOUCH Safari, because it is an Apple product!

I am NOT AN APPLE FANBOY! Don’t you dare insult me like that. I could say all kinds of things about you just because you are calling me an Apple Fanboy! That would immediately imply, like you just did, that I am an idiot IF I liked their products which I HATE!!!!

        P.S.
I’m using Safari on my Dell laptop to browse these pages because it’s speedy and better for quick surfing and media viewing than PaleMoon or Firefox.

    To correct some earlier comments:

Apple was backing their Firewire standard while USB was being developed by Intel, IBM, NEC, Compaq in 1994 – 1996. The first machines with USB were being shipped in the Winter of 1996. Apple came late but with a loud glamourous entrance to the USB party in 1998 with the iMac.
In 2005 a wireless USB standard was started by Intel Corporation, HP, LSI Logic, Microsoft Corporation, NEC Corporation, NXP Semiconductors, and Samsung Electronics. Again Apple is not in the founding development team and isn’t speaking about using wireless USB.
Will they again jump in a year or more late to the party and then use their supremely sophisticated marketing abilities to make it appear that they were the power behind making wireless USB a reality like they’ve done with wired USB???

You’re WAY out of order, dude … it won’t just be USB … get real … it’ll be iUSB. Now do you see? Huh? Huh?

      • http://twitter.com/stevils steven smith

Your right!!! We’ll be using iUBS… not wireless USB or USB 3. What was I thinking???

  • Anonymous

i would buy that in a heart beat

    Still no support Adobe Flash!!

    • http://twitter.com/stevils steven smith

Apple doesn’t want to send a royalty stream to Adobe without Adobe kicking back some of that cash.
Flash has regular security holes open up and needs constant patching and it is the number one slowdown of browsers and Apple doesn’t want to handle the tech support calls for Adobe’s issues.

Also HTML 5 is supposed to be killing Adobe’s strangle hold on multimedia content… we’ll see.

I still believe that people are real suckers to have bought the first gen iPad. They purposely built the thing lacking so many key features just so they can sell you it again in a year.

    Obvious things they left out:

    - iPad display sucks. When it came out it looked good only compared to the iPhone 3G. My phone is old and the pixel density makes the iPad screen look like crap. No excuse for them to release that crap sceen and then right after go all crazy about retna display.

    - Dual cameras, one front facing. This should have tipped everyone off that buying an original iPad was a sham.

  • Imahottguy

Jibba jabba… Just had to get that out. It’s really hard to say what is going to make the next iPad iteration a sell. Facetime cam for sure, more RAM is highly likely. However, apart from those, it’s anyones guess. Perhaps a capacity bump and/or price drop. The wildest suggestion I’d believe is a seven incher. But that’s just me. I own a 3G 64GB model, and am very satisfied with it. It, and my iPod shuffle are the only Apple products that I own. My computer is a Sony Vaio, and my soon to be built torrent box will be comprised of parts purchased most likely from NewEgg. So haters keep on hatin’. Oh yeah, and WP7 hasn’t been unlocked, it has been rooted. Unlocking is for carriers! Gaw!

Jesus BGR, can you do away with some of your ads before I permanently delete this bookmark? Your pages never stop loading… very annoying. And now your slider/blow-up ads make things even worse.

Get the AdBlock and ClicToFlash extensions for Safari. FlashBlock on Firefox and AdBlock extensions.
My browsing life is sooooo much more enjoyable and speedy with these two add-ons.

        Safari? Is that like Mosaic?
        C’mon, everyone uses Firefox.

      • http://twitter.com/stevils steven smith

Ummm, no. FF is losing market share to Google… They have some technical glitches going unsolved and are slower on the gadgets than Chrome. They are losing ground,,,

  • http://twitter.com/MikeAndersonWA Mike Anderson

honestly, this doesn’t look like a backed up with evidence rumor… it’s more of just a pipe dream.

    •Retina Display

probably not, as it would be really hard to manufacture and cost a lot of money… maybe on iPad 3, but I’m not banking on RD on iPad 2.

•Front-facing camera for FaceTime video chat

This one is pretty much a guarantee, i think a rear-facing camera is a definite possibility too.

•A thinner glass panel for a lighter build

    Fairly likely.

    •A USB port

no… There is no evidence of this one, and adding USB would just add weight/size that isn’t necessary.

    •A 3-axis gyroscope

    also very likely.

  • Emsyste

USB will convert the holdouts… and upset a bunch of early adopters

  • Ipad Interested

Retina Display – Very unlikely as it would require a graphics processor that would burn to much battery
