Motorola’s next devices for AT&T and Verizon Wireless

Whisper

Interested in the next generation Motorola Android device to hit AT&T and Verizon? One of our Motorola sources just shot us over some information. The Tegra 2 phone is called (internally) Olympus… and is hitting AT&T in January. It’s “very fast, and the new screen is beautiful.” As far as Verizon’s handset, it is code-named “Etna” and is will be powered by a Tegra 2 as well, but should launch in February or March and be 100% LTE-compatible

Way to be a jackass. This phone will smoke anything apple has to offer.

      • http://twitter.com/mistercarter7 Mike Gonzalez

until iPhone 5 comes and blow this cheap azz competition away and nobody will care about anything but the iPhone once again

      • http://www.searingarrow.com AlienSix

So you mean the iPhone 5 will be more advanced for like what? 1 month? and then the next Kickass Android phone will come out and you will be looking at 2012 for iPhone 6

      • Jasons_waxxx

Yeah right… the iphone 10 will still be sooo locked down, you still wont be able to have or add your own custom sms notification sounds.
Major weak for steve jobs, the control freak.
My Droid X stunts on the iphone4 and its over controlled and locked down OS.
Don’t hate Android just cuz it requires a bit more brain power to utilize.
You can keep all your iphone games and apps.
And be stuck syncing EVERYTHING through iTunes…hahaha
I’ll stick with being able to mount my phone to my computer just like an external hard drive.
        There’s nothing “I” in iphone except I DON’T!
Apple should rename it to the SJ Phone…since all it really is, is what Steve Jobs wants it to be.
Keep believing him and Apple’s marketing.
You are his sheep, and he is your Shepherd.
        Baaaaaaaaaaaah!

      • Gquaglia

The iphone 5 will be like every other iphone release, lots of hype, little of substance.

      • Norm

No way!!!! DROID DOES!! DROID is the best OS out there and most stable. I can run 200 more applications at a given moment compared to the iphone which can only run 1 app at a time. Not to mention my battery life on my DROID INCREDIBLER 2 Prototype gets 3 straight months on one single charge…beat that. DROID DOES!! crApple sucks!

      • MGN87

really dont think the iphone 5 will be doing what the Olympus will/can do…sorry…just can see it happening…people who say it will, are just the die hard apple/job lovers anyway….we all know that…I will go for the phone that can do all I want it to do, and at kneck snapping speeds…I dont and never did like apple….whether it be there pc’s or there handheld devices…they make a good product, but comes with a serious price and commitment…and there phones are not easy to fix when needed…I know that for a fact…jump thru hoops, and friggin obstacle courses to maintain it…sorry…facts are facts….carry on plz..

      • Anonymous

And then another Android phone will come out after the iPhone 5 that’ll blow the iPhone 5 away…

        And the cycle will continue…

Look, its enough pie for everyone. There doesnt need to be any “iPhone killers”. Some ppl will like the iPhone, some will like Android, some will like WP7, etc…

Just get what you like and be happy.

  • Nathan

So…to get this in a few months or the HTC Mecha for Verizon? I’m up in mid-January and I’m going to wait for either.

What do you all think? Sounds like it will be impressive.

    • Anonymous

wait for the HTC. They seem to be more susceptible to being rooted rather than moto’s locked bootloaders, I cant wait to see the ROMs modded for next years phones.

  • Cransr

One droid to rule them all. i think i kno what im getting for my birthday and i’m definitely using my birthday wish on no vzw bing.

  • Anonymous

So the HTC Incredible HD, LG Star and now this? Verizon is going to have some mind blowing devices to show off at CES.

  • grrr

Your sources are weak. That info has been known for months.

    • Durrrr

When they say “our Motorola sources” they really mean they have been reading the Howard Forums.

And reading them pretty late it seems

  • Norm

The iphone sucks. No one wants something easy and efficient. They want DROID! I will take the lag, force closing, and lack of apps over the iphone any time. I like to have to over complicate my life because my phone can DOES! The iphone does not DOES, so it sucks. DROID!! Come one DROID brothers. Press LIKE to back me up that DROID DOES better than iphone DOES.

Tell you what, when you can install a keyboard that helps you improve your grammar cuz your phone is Android based, then you can come back and be a jerk (and I don’t mean an unlocked iphone).

    • Anonymous

Norm you’re crazier then usual tonight.

    • Demofya

Preach it. iPhone is good to the majority of smartphone users…. those who have no clue about technology. (which sadly is 70% of the US). They like new technological advances only because of its society presentation. (hence the reasoning behind people buying netbooks and ipads.

The remaining 30% of Americans actually purchase electronics based on needs and wants that will work into (or with) their current lifestyle (or soon to be). Droid does better than anything out their because Droid allows creativity. iPhone functions as simply a catering device to novice/amatuer smartphone users whom don’t particularly care to tinker and create.

      • Guy

Android was made for the people who know how to work their tech and appreciate an environment that evolves very fast. Apple is perfect for people who only want to run 1 app at a time, and need a phone that just works.
Seeing how fast Android phones are evolving, this generation is behind, next generation (2011) will be just behind or about the same. The generation after that (2012) will most likely be the one where Android takes over, if not sooner.

    Specs Please.

And Sprint’s Motorola device will be called ” Doesn’t Exist. My carrier have me feeling like a hypocrite, more and more. I used to really bash people who would leave their carrier and good plans just for a phone, but in my case, I’m tempting to leave because of our phone selections. Verizon and T-Mobile customers complaining about not having certain phones, and all I could do is laugh hysterically. Can I have your phone problem please?

    • Anonymous

I say dont IF other carriers have worse coverage or you dont like the plan prices of other carriers.

I only chose Verizon cuz I can use my phones in the subway system….the phones that have good reception. Thats also why I’m a Motorola fan. Reception has been good vs. other phones I used over the years….all on Verizon.

      • Guy

Or you could buy an unlocked phone and use any carrier you want.

    • Dwayneearlwilliams

      You have the EVO.

  • Brian

    Remove Moto/Ninja/Shadow blur and Bing….and I’m listening.

  • Booboolala2000

Just so Norm and the other iPhone fantards know. The iPhone 4 was already passed by, by phones that were released months prior to its release. It is a lame duck phone. They better be doing some serious work on iPhone 5. And as far as these new Android devices are concerned, they had better beef up the spec big time if they want to make sure that people buy, because if they don’t people will wait. As many people that have Android have learned in the past year, there is always something better around the corner. And if you buy cheap, you get cheap.

  • Anonymous

Don’t care for the name, but it sounds like Etna will be a winner spec-wise. With Tegra 2 I would think speed-wise you’d not need any more improvements… but of course more robust games will come out and you’ll want/need more power. As much as I like my D1, there are games on the X that play a lot more smoothly, and so on it will go… Looking forward to an upgrade in February so thanks for the good news!

    • saila5

Etna is the internal Motorola name … VzW will decide what the market name will be … same for Olympus and AT&T …

  • Fueledbykryptonite

Just give me the freaking iPhone already! Just read FORTUNE’s issue on “The Dream Phone” Verizons iPhone! I can not wait! I think I’ll $hit a brick when the first pictures are revealed, so many questions need to be answered! Great article in FORTUNE, well worth the read!

A non customizable interface with no widgets. No true multitasking. Every app must go through a vigorous approval first, which seems to eliminate the abily to get gray-area apps such as emulators. Requires bumper so your human skin does not drop the signal. Hardware made exclusively by apple, and locks down the ability for innovations that other hardware manufacturers often make.
One place it shines, however, is its smoothness. The interface slides, scrolls, and transitions seemlessly like butter. The browser is snappy. Things launch quickly. When compared to many android devices, it looks awesome.
Since android has true multitasking, widgets that pull data constantly, and graphic intensive visuals it can get choppy and not so smooth on most devices. But phones like the droid x and evo pack enough punch to run it all seemlessly. Once we get tegra 2, ios can forget it, unless they make some needed changes.

      • ConcernedConsumer

“Hardware made exclusively by apple” is wrong, in fact NONE of the iPhone is made by Apple. Apple pays another company Foxcon to manufacture it in China, where they are not bound by US laws and ethics when making it.

      • Davemanster

The hardware is designed by Apple and Manufactured by Foxconn. In a sense, you both are correct and you both are wrong.

  • Booboolala2000

I really wish I could get the iPhone for, but I’m stuck on verizon with a crappy phone.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1143030578 Curtis Hoffman

the iPhone isn’t worth it. if you have any sense of originality you’ll stop asking for something that’s not only completely uncustomizable but locked into the worst network in the united states

      • Booboolala2000

This was not a post by me. Probably norm. I would never get an iphone four. Norm, learn to spell. If you are going to hijack a comment, learn to profile first.

      • Deez

        you are R E Tarded

      • Cellphoneguy313

ORIGINALITY? iphone is the easiest to use and does the most with no modification. i have all 5 popular os and ios is solid and has more free apps than android offers total and i dont need to worry about my info being stolen like on android. and before too long i will be a wp7 fan boy for the simplicity of it. and as far as worst network you obviously are a moron because att is as good or better than vzw all over, faster web and comprable coverage tmo sprint need to catch up……. vzw needs to keep trying to rule the air because the allover network allows u to rethink possible biotch

      • Deezsuxmydick

I agree, for 95% of smartphone users the iPhone is the best option. Its the most used phone in the world for a reason. Its intuitive, easy to use, and has lots of functions. It has the most apps, and with a jailbreak, which is also incredibly easy to do, even more functionality is added. As far as the worst network goes, I can’t wait until the iphone hits verizon and starts clogging up their network. Especially considering that Verizon still hasn’t capped its data plans, its going to be almost unusable once the iphone launches.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1413454448 Jennifer Trent Lawton

Settle down ATT fanboy. Check out AT&T’s National 3G coverage map. At first glance it looks great. Try zooming in a couple of levels. All of a sudden the truth emerges. HSPA footprint is really limited. Leave major metro markets and your dropping then reconnecting to UMTS, Edge and even GPRS. But your right of course ATT has the speed advantage….at least for another week or so…. till VZW launches LTE. To the joker below who replied to you…… VZW hasn’t capped its data plans because it engineers its network better and doesn’t have to.

      • Anonymous

An “Originality” post coming from cellphoneguy313.. haha. #FAIL

      • http://twitter.com/derrickisonline Derrick -Lex-

Exactly. They dumbed it down the for the dumb sheep. There is nothing original about going to a meeting and EVERYONE at the table having an iPhone. Not only that, but all your iPhones look exactly alike. How’s that original? I love pulling out my Droid X and before that, a Droid (original). See some of us like choices and options. Keyboard or no keyboard. Slide out keyboard, or slide down keyboard. 1GHz processor, or 800MHz processor. Overclock or no overclock. Custom skin, or no custom skin. Root (using an app from the Google Market), or no root, HDMI, or no HDMI. Front facing camera, or no front facing camera.

That’s the beauty of Android. By the way I owned two iPhones the original and the 3G before converting to Android once it hit 2.0 which in my opinion was the only iteration of Android worthy for public consumption. So I’m able to comment on devices I’ve owned. Whereas you’ve probably never used an Android phone. Do next time put your iPhone up to a Droid X and see who has the better phone, better service, and more features. I will admit Apple set the standard. They raised the bar on full web browsing, properly implemented touch screen (i.e. non-resistive), phone updates over the air adding new functionality, etc. But the time has come, it took a while but the competitors have now surpassed Apple. Just as the tablet market will do the same, and it will be done by giving consumers options. Not telling them you get what we give you. Not by telling consumers “a 7-inch tablet is DOA” instead saying we’ll give you the option of a 10 inch tablet or a 7 a la Google’s Android.

Do all of us Verizon subscribers a favor. Keep your craptasic iPhone on your slow azz AT&T network. The last thing we need is you guys turning our network to shi*.

  • Anonymous

Why does Verizon gets to have one? How bout giving us AT&T users some DROIDS for once instead of these crappy Android Moto been giving to AT&T just glad I didn’t get to upgrade and return my crappy X10.

    • Victor

AT&T has had plenty of sales due to the iPhone. I really don’t care about AT&T too much anyways. If it wasn’t for the iPhone they wouldn’t be more than just another cell phone company trying to keep it’s .01% market share.

    • Demofya

Well for starters, the DROID moniker has been licensed through Lucas Studios and is exclusively for Verizon Wireless (life time exclusitivity from my understanding). Note that out of all the Android based smartphones, only Verizon phones are “DROIDS” which is a translation for high end Android OS smartphones. If the phone is not highend, then you will not see the DROID moniker in the name.

That said, AT&T CAN have DROID’s if AT&T are willing to admit that Verizon Wireless has better service and is an overall better wireless provide, then pay Verizon Wireless (and Lucas Studios) for the license and rights to use the DROID moniker for its high end smartphones using Android software. We all know this will not take place EVER.

That said, if you don’t pay for the rights and licensing to use the name… you can’t use it period. Verizon Wireless was the company that encouraged Lucas to allow usage of these rights and licenses to start. So if you really want a high end DROID (and lets be honest… its only a name buddy), then you have to switch over to Americas Fastest 3G network. (soon to be fastest 4G network).

      • Molly

Really?? Making arrangements to use “Droid” at ATT would be admitting Verizon is better? So along that logic, when Verizon gets the iphone, they are admitting ATT is better. I assume from your post that you either work for Verizon or would like to. F

    • http://twitter.com/derrickisonline Derrick -Lex-

      Ask Apple.

  • motherchucker

Hmm now I wonder how expensive the data plans are going to be…

    • Homer

Well lets put it this way… they are charging people $150+ per month for a Droid that is only 3G LOL!!! Don’t bank on being able to afford Verizon’s “4G” unless you have enough money to fly your private jet to the Verizon store to sign up.

      • Jbutler

$150+ per month for a Verizon droid I’d like to see your math on that one. Even assuming they went unlimeted everything Minutes, Text, and Data, it would only amount to $110+Tax. This sounds like the kind of baseless lies of an uninformed fanboy. Not sure who you’re blindly representing on this one but get your facts straight before posting here.

      • Anonymous

Really…they way he implied it data plans alone were $150…lol

  • Yeaboy!

    Blur will ruin these phones.

  • Arctic Aclhemist

good grief.. Why do iphone fanboys have to be so rabbid? I don’t go out and look for iphone 4 crap to troll.

If you really think that closed source is the way to go, be my guest, we can both think the other person is stupid.

Doesn’t mean we have to take every possible oppertunity to try and literally kill the other person.

    Long, live the green guy!
