BlackBerry Playbook pricing to start at $399?

Tablets

A blog by the name of Mobility Insider is claiming to have the inside scoop on the pricing schema for the unreleased BlackBerry Playbook tablet. The site does not cite any sources — anonymous or otherwise — but claims to have first hand knowledge about RIM’s tablet. The report indicates that the Playbook will be available with three different storage capacities. An 8GB model will retail for $399, a 16GB for $499, and a 32GB for $599. The site goes on to note that all models will be Wi-Fi only and will acquire cellular data connectivity through a tethered BlackBerry smartphone. RIM’s highly-anticipated, dual-core tablet is set to launch sometime early next year… what do you think of the purported pricing?

WiFi only and almost the same price as the iPad? I think Apple isn’t concerned at all until someone comes into this market with a significant price reduction to what the iPad costs.

      dumbest post ever.

I’d think Apple’s concern is what happens if Flash / Air works decent. The specs are obviously much higher.

That tethering to a blackberry concept is going to really hurt sales. Bad move.

Not if you have “mywi” on your iPhones :-) best of both world.

Or a Blackberry, only one data plan.

At that price, I am pretty sure I will be getting one.

    not so smart for Blackberry.

people don’t want to carry two devices for data and voice. that’s precisely the pt of making smart phones to marry to 2 together. also, people don’t need to learn yet another OS either, just one that we are already familiar with…such as windows or should i say android?

absolutely no need to reinvent here, make a better tool that people already know would be a better move.

Yes, you know exactly what everyone wants./s
If it means I don’t have to pay carrier a monthly fee for two separate devices, then why not have it tether through your phone? Thats my way of seeing it. You have a different opinion don’t you?

      • http://twitter.com/MikeKillion Mike Killion

Totally agreed. I don’t see a single instance when I won’t have my phone so why should I have to pay two data plans.

Also, it looks like RIM is using the PB to get people acquainted with QNX. Which is great since they’ll be using it in the future for their phones.

I hope that the Playback being WiFi will encourage Android tablet makers to come out with WiFi only devices. Most people that buy tablets already pay for a data package on their phones and can easily tether to their tablet when on the go. The price sounds good considering the better hardware than the iPad. The web browser is the critical part of the Playback, if it is great the need for apps will be reduced.

I was going to wait for the Playbook, but then heard that Archos is coming out with some very well reviewed WiFi-only Android tablets — in 5 different sizes (10″, 7″, 5″ and a couple smaller ones that seem more like in the spirit of iPod Touch). Now I’m conflicted. Anyone else investigated these new Android tablets?

I’ll have to wait and see what the app market for this ends up being like. The prices are essentially the same as an iPad except they offer an 8GB model for $100 less but the real attraction of a tablet isn’t just the web browsing but how extend-able it is using apps. Besides, requiring a Blackberry or MyFi for mobile data is a real downer.

    • http://twitter.com/MikeKillion Mike Killion

But with a full web browsing experience, you don’t need apps.

I’m getting this but I’m going to wait til they come out with the black berry montana ( touch screen bold) hopefully by then the playbooks app market is loaded with great apps and games.

I love when people down the iPhone and the iPad. Just remember who got the ball rolling on these clones people. Grow up.

  • Macboy15

@norm lol ya the droid galaxy tab is the best selling droid tablet. Not the best selling tablet? 600,000 sold since launch is not that great. Compared to apple iPad selling 3 million at launch.

    • Jbutler

Jobs can crap in a box and sell at least a million units at launch. Apple sheeple will buy anything with a lowercase i in front of it regardless of whether or not it has any more functionality than the 3 year old computer currently sitting in their den. I hear the iPad 2 may add a USB Port, and a front facing camera. Truly revolutionary.

Bb will be lucky too sell half a mill
    Of these things.

The pricing guarantees sales in the millions. It will sell ok. Whether it has legs or the price point make’s sense to RIM’s bottom line is another story,

As a small business owner i was looking for a smaller tab, I am also looking at the ipad. But I am looking at each for completely different reasons. The ipad and it’s larger screen will take the place of large binders and product catalogs to share with customers for in-house use at the office. The Playbook I will use to haul around with me on the road and take home with me.
Its not a zero sum game. I think a lot of people will have both.

  • LGR

i would love to have it but i’ll wait for the 10″ to come out :)
