Acer announces nameless 4.8-inch Android smartphone; April 2011 launch

Breaking

Peculiar, we’d say, that a company would announce a product before it even gives it a name, but who are we to judge? Acer announced Tuesday that it will launch an Android smartphone in the second quarter of 2011. The massive device will feature a 4.8-inch 1024 x 480-pixel touchscreen display, a 1GHz processor, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, HSDPA 14.4, DLNA, Dolby sound and more. According to Acer, the device will be “100% phone and 100% tablet.” No pricing was announced for this tall drink of water but more details should trickle in over the next few months. Hit the break for Acer’s press release.

      @xFenixKnightx

Looks nice… now if it only came with stock Android Gingerbread OS 2.3 …

    • P51d007

      2.3?
Heck, I’d be happy if Dell/At&t would push 2.2 to my streak, without having to resort to
      rooting it first ;)

“Hit the break for Acer’s press release”

You mean brake. .. not break.

    • Anonymous

He dose in act mean “break”. Line-break, to be precise.

I don’t understand some of these screen sizes. 4.3″ is pretty much max screen size for a phone. And anything under 7″ is too small for a tablet. Who wants to carry an oversize phone that is also an undersized tablet? Not me! And probably not many others…

    • Anonymous

How is this too big? You do realize that the width of this screen is the same as the iPhone 4… It’s just longer (about 0.6″ longer).

    • Anonymous

There’s no such thing as it being to big. If you don’t believe me ask any woman out there.

So close to Xmas…So close to releasing newer smartphones with faster processors>>>>dual core….Why? why? would you make such a pretty and high end phone, so close to the new year, with 2010 hardware?? why?

    • EncourageTrolls

Dual core? Seriously? You’re complaining about not getting dual core? When smartphones can barely be considered mobile when you need a charger every 4 hours with moderate use? Especially Android. At 4.8″, the screen will absolutely drain any lith-ion battery used. They better figure out something that mitigates the drain of the battery instead of focusing on pushing spec bullshit. Specs only matter so long as you can enjoy using the device.

You forget, with faster processors, comes better race to idle times. Meaning it does what it needs to quicker, not needing to take as long to process.

  • MGN87

If Acer wanted to take some glory in the mobile device game, they shouldnt have repeated what Dell just did, but to wait until the new year, and blow the doors off the competition with all new 2011 hardware and technology…

1 GHz single core by April? I get the sense that 1GHz is going to be old news by then. I like the screen size a lot but can’t stomach the processor.

    • EncourageTrolls

Why don’t you complain about something meaningful, like the fact that lith-ion batteries can barely keep a charge long enough with 600 MHz CPU run smartphones now. The idea of wireless used to be that you could be unconnected to a charger for two to three days. Now, you have to reconnect every 12 hours at the longest.

Not to hijack or anything, but can someone explain why smartphones with touchscreens no longer have dedicated call and hangup buttons on the phone? Just curious as it really bugs me and keeps me from diving into the smartphone market.

    Thanks!

Not sure if this screen resolution is supported by Google… Also, I’m not a big fan of the 21:9 ratio. LG BL40 was also this ratio, and it was too tall too thin. iPhone’s ratio (3:2) and Android’s ratio (16:9 & 16:10) seem to be best for one handed operation and keyboard size.

With this phone, I think that if the keyboard is the same size as current Android phones the top of the phone will be impossible to reach one-handed. Vice versa, if screen is a manageable size, keyboard will be smaller. It’s probably the former, judging from the 4.8 number.

To big, I hope not every smartphone in 5 years is a standard 5″. I bet Apple would be the only one with the same screen size unchanged.

    • Oye Consolte!

      Too* big.

  • Oye Consolte!

I hate anything Acer. But this looks enticing. I might just try it out. Maybe.

  • Brendan

    I came.

  • EncourageTrolls

Your gonna need a really long cranial structure to support talking on this POS

  • Drew

You sissy’s have nothing else to complain about…?? Somebody screaming for dual core and another whining about the hardware being sooo 2010. Find another device (Even another Android device) with an HSDPA of 14.4 with DLNA support, Flash 10.1, Front-facing Camera, HDMI, Wi-Fi A/B/G/N, BT 3.0 and the list goes on. Not EVO, not Nexus S or the G2, or the iPhone 4, HTC HD7, Dell Streak or Venue Pro, Galaxy S or Vibrant and NONE of the Droid series phones have ALL of what I just mentioned on one device. Only the G2 matches the HSPA+ @14.4 which hopefully puts it right in T-Mobile lap. Really?? What part of these specs make it last years news?? Get over yourselves…

This baby looks sweet! Too bad they aren’t releasing it in time for the holidays cause this would be my next phone. I have big hands so this would not be a problem.

  • Anonymous

Not a huge fan of Acer but the form factor of that handset looks really nice. I wouldn’t mind playing around with it and seeing what it can do.

  • zps

    pretty awesome design.

    • Anonymous

Yeah I agree. I wish all handset manufacturers would try and add a little flare to their products form factor. To much cheap plasticy looking phones out there nowadays.

  • Bhoffman

not much different than the EVO

  • Rick00770

Looks good, i like the big screen, might be just the thing between tablet and phone, now all i gotta do is figure out how to have it when im locked into my sprint contract with my evo.
