News Corp and Apple to launch iPad-only newspaper

Software

There have been mumblings about this in the past, but The Guardian is now claiming the project is almost ready, and it could even be unveiled later this month. The iPad-only newspaper will be called The Daily and is said to be available exclusively on iPad tablets. It’s price? $0.99/week. There are reportedly over 100 journalists assigned to managing The Daily with them all working out of the 26th floor of the News Corp offices in New York. Rupert Murdoch, CEO of News Corp., has been saying that this is the future of online news content, and that “consumers are willing to pay for high-quality, original content.” On the flip side, Apple engineers have reportedly been working on the launch of The Daily by making sure the technical back end system is in place for a newspaper subscription service. This will be extremely interesting to see play out…

Interesting that liberal Steve Jobs is teaming up with the emperor of conservative media Rupert Murdoch.

It is business, not politics. When you agree financially everything else takes a backseat.

      • TechJunkieforLife

Here states everything that is wrong with the world today, when money removes the need to stand to your personal beliefs.

  • Stop

News Corp: manufactured “news” for the haters.

  • Anonymous

I can see them NOT reporting on a lot of things that are news worthy.

    Another biased electronic printing, yay.

  • Norm

I’m so sick of all of this crApple news. No one cares about them. They are tanking. We need more info on the DROID Knight asap.

    • http://www.facebook.com/peterf Peter Fares

I wonder if Norm is an inside joke by the BGR writers? He is always super quick to post on every article. It would be pretty funny if whenever one of the BGR writers posts a story, they quickly make a comment by “Norm.”

      • sirpaul

He posted 30 minutes after the article was posted. How is that “super quick”? I usually check BGR ever 10-30 minutes – with 1 hour being the bare minimum most of the time. There ARE people addicted to BGR, and I guess Norm is one of them! You can also subscribe to RSS, though I don’t know how that works.

      • Norm

        RSS is correct sir.

      • numetheus

There are numerous RSS clients you can use to read sites like this. I use them on my devices rather than going to the full site most of the time. Lots of clients will even text you or send an email if a new story is posted. He just seems like someone extremely attached to his RSS client whether it be a mobile device or laptop. Either way, he does seem like someone who posts 24/7 like he has nothing else to do. Maybe he is jobless living in his moms basement?

    • sirpaul

If no one cares about them how come they get more comments in a day than every other post all week? This story got 10 comments in 1 hour, and the one before it 26 comments in 2.5 hours.

As comparison: HTC Knight got 28 comments in 23 hours, palm OS got 5 comments in 2 days.

    • Norms Soiled Underpants

Hello owner you there??? WASH ME NOW!!!!!!

    • numetheus

BGR can’t control the news that is out there. No one cares about Apple? Or YOU don’t care about Apple. Because whether you like it or not, the general public as a whole does care about Apple products. Call them victims to awesome advertising, lover of all things form over function, or mindless Apple sheep … it doesn’t change the fact Apple is extremely popular. Saying “nobody cares about them” shows just how naive you really are.

  • Anonymous

That’s actually a pretty reasonable price as long as it has good content and doesn’t feel like a 99 cent-a-week version of a 99 cent-a-day paper.

  • sirpaul

honestly, what is the point of this? Other than different authors, who cares? The best newspapers will always be available to the public in print and online.

  • sirpaul

    It better have cartoons.

  • Buchsman

    Fucking republicans!!

Jobs has finally opened his mind to the truth! Now hopefully Jobs will start using “The Daily” in his products ads instead of occasionally showing that terrorist supporting, America hating, liberal rag the new york times. Of course that won’t matter much longer anywas since the nyt is on the verge of bankruptcy anyway…just like the U.S. thanks to Obummer.

I might now have to get an iPad for my kid this Christmas instead of an Android or W7 tablet.

Go Jobs & Murdoch!!!! The truth to the libs is like the sun to a vampire.

Wow, the most difficult job on the planet and people want to bash the person holding that office no matter who they are. I find the lack of respect for the Office of President of the United States to be a tragedy really. While debating is what brings about growth and change in people and policies, the complete lack of respect for elected officials is just plain ignorant.

Those of you who refer to any of our Presidents as anything other than President ________ should feel ashamed. Your parents should also feel shame for allowing you to grow up under the guidance that this sort of behavior is okay. Disagree with policies, disagree with people but please have respect for the system.

      • Norm

It was okay to bash George Bush and compare him to Hitler, but I agree bashing Obama is just wrong and likely racist. He cares so much about us. For example, look at all of these lavish trips he is going on all throughout the world. It may be costing insane amount of tax payer money, but he is doing all out of his love and respect for each and everyone of us. I personally pray to him every night. YES WE CAN!

      • Anonymous

Bashing any sitting President is disrespectful. Be part of a solution, not part of the problem.

      • Tn7871

The trips aren’t “lavish” as in “vacation” as you would want people to believe. These are State trips to promote the United States, and iron out differences/make new deals. If he wasn’t doing it, I’m sure you’d be saying he hated America. Let me guess.. you believe the completely made up $200 million/day story, right?

      • Norm

He is far from a leader. He can give a better speech than George W. Bush, but that is about all he offers. He is still just as a bad as Bush in all other respects, if not worse.

      • Norms Soiled Underpants

HEY OWNER GET OFF BGR AND WASH THAT BROWN STREAK OFF ME. PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE SMELL. EVERY TIME YOU SHOW UP FOR WORK AT THE LOCAL MALL DROID KIOSK YOUR CO WORKERS PLUG THEIR NOSES AND TRY TO STAND AS FAR AWAY FROM YOU AS POSSIBLE. EVEN THE CUSTOMERS ARE STARTING TO AVOID YOU. ITS STARTING TO EFFECT YOUR DROID SALES.

      • Yourmom

Get over yourself. He’s the President of the US for crying out loud. What do you expect? He’s not going to go around writing checks and using personal credit cards to meet with foreign leaders.

I understand that Fox News would have you believe that as a Black President he should be doing these things.

It’s funny. Fox News reported the story that the President’s visit to India cost 200 Million per day. It was later found out to be completely false but Fox hasn’t recanted it yet.

Fox News used their own fake reporters to stage a video to be published online that tried to smear ACORN. Guess what it worked and the company had to close down. Their stunt was shortly thereafter uncovered but Fox News never mentioned it again.

That’s not news reporters doing their job. That’s Murdoch using the airwaves to push his political agenda and you have Middle America soaking it all in as fact.

I flew to Tulsa on business and stopped at a local convenience store. There were people discussing the National Enquirer whose title claimed Obama was a Muslim and they were agreeing with it because Glenn Beck of Fox News confirmed it to be true.

    • TechJunkieforLife

“since the nyt is on the verge of bankruptcy anyway…just like the U.S. thanks to Obummer”

Interesting considering Bush had a Liberal surplus coming into office and blew it all on illegal wars, TARP plans and tax cuts all while spending more than any other president in history. What’s that about truth and vampires again?

  • Xannik

News is not a medium you can put behind a paywall, especially when this massive global network of communication, better known as the Internet, exists. If something is really news worthy I’m very likely to hear about it via Twitter nowadays over any other medium.

News is an always will be primarily financed through advertising. Murdoch has been trying to get people to pay for their news for years, but it is not going to happen. Why would I pay for this when I can visit websites or have RSS news feeds deliver the same information for free?

I’m sure Murdoch will find some iPad users willing to fork over their money for News Corp’s subpar reporting, after all Apple users are known for their wealth and frivolity. Nevertheless, even amongst iPad users I see the market for this as short lived.

  • Tn7871

Great. Now iPad owners can get more misinformation in the disguise of “news”.

  • http://btopro.net/ Bryan Ollendyke

very interesting indeed. I’m surprised to not see other’s go this route already like NYT but if the information is high quality and timely I think 52 bucks/year is reasonably attractive.

  • Mwrg

Left wingers hate Rupert Murdoch. Meanwhile he continues to be the only one in the news business making any money.

And for those spouting off about “misinformation”: Those that live in huge glass houses shouldn’t try throwing the New York Times or Washington Post.

    • HairyBalzz

For a news org that claims to be “Fair and Balanced,” they sure do only portray news that supports the GOP agenda and prey on the unemployed, those with racially prejudice tendencies, socially awkward or those who cannot think for themselves and take every opportunity to slam our President for better or worse.

I took the Fox News challenge for a week. After the trial, I started to hate our President… I started to believe he was Muslim, started to blame minorities for all our countries ills, included G Beck’s health in my prayers (before saying Amen) and started to flirt with the idea of joining the KKK for recreational purposes and campaign donations.

Why pay 99 cents/week for Apple centric news when you can come to BGR for free and get the same biased perspective here?

    • Anonymous

You don’t like it here then GTFO. Nobody makes you come here so just buzz off and go away.

      • Len

Who said I didn’t like it here? I love “impartial” techblogs which praise Apple. I need this cuzit boosts my self-esteem when someone else tells me that the products I buy from Apple are the best.

    • numetheus

So, what you’re saying is that sites like this should ignore Apple news just to make themselves look non biased? Because the general public looks very favorably towards Apple products as do corporations. So it’s no surprise there is a lot of news around Apple. Is this the fault of BGR? No … they just report tech news, and a lot of that news is Apple related. They should not bypass tech news because haters will think of them as biased. If you look, Apple news graces ALL of the tech blogs.

it makes sense. Two heavyweights in their respective industries …. Murdoch’s Fox news and Job’s iWorld. I can almost hear the background music in that Orwellian ad, but you know …. the overwhelming surge of ironic laughter is drowning out everything else.

  • https://me.yahoo.com/a/J7Mg.aBrt_zUZAONR5KHn_om4dCMew--#37f81 destardi

    This is nuts.

A great big bang is going to be heard with the arrogant hipsters collide with the right-based agenda of Murdoch’s lovely little ‘newspaper’.

/I hate everyone equally; both groups (if you associate hipsters with being ‘liberal’, though they don’t really understand the meaning of the word) are fucking our country up.

  • la rider

I would pay for high quality content. I’m tired of amateur driven blogs.

  • http://bit.ly/samirsshah समीर शाह

The Daily is a very very good idea. It is nice to see Rupert Murdoch following the footsteps of Reed Hastings and doing “Creative Destruction”.
