HTC Knight is a 4G QWERTY slider, runs Android 2.2

Exclusive

We just received some more information on the device known as the HTC Knight. In addition to a3.7-inch display, the HTC Knight will, in fact, sport a sliding QWERTY keyboard and 4G connectivity. The phone will also rock an 8-megapixel camera, and most excitingly, will possibly be powered by a dual core processor. Our source saw an early unit that had a 1GHz CPU, but he believes it’s possible there will be a dual core processor at launch. This seems to be Sprint’s version of the HTC Desire Z, as previously reported — and it’s not looking like a flagship phone at this point in time. If not, we have to wonder what else Sprint is cooking up right now.

    Give me Gingerbread?

Sweet!! can’t wait to see it

It’s a not a flagship but it has a dual core processor? LOLNOIt’s the HTC Desire Z reskinned with WiMAX like the Merge. Not much to see here folks

    • Anonymous

Yea the Desire Z is arguably the fastest phone on the market processor wise… Add WiMax to the mix which already has half of So Cal covered and that’s a big deal…

At least Sprint is willing to take longer on each phone and not just fill the shelves with shotty low-end barely entry level phones like other carriers. trying to mix messaging phones loaded with android doesn’t work. they’re slow and unresponsive. I’m glad they’re coming out with a mid-range HTC phone. I mean, they’re still seliing the Hero, and people want a more updated phone for around that same price, not $199(Evo) or $249(Epic) but something that will run well and do everything + awesome pictures. (let’s hope it’s cheaper, no word yet on price)

Also, after the Hero, Sprint realized people want hardware that WILL be updated to 2.0++, thus the push for 2.2 on the Evo, the second after the N1 to get 2.2 froyo. Having a midrange phone that people will want is a smart move. People will want to go to Sprint for their cheap(er) data prices for *unlimited* (to a certain degree) data per month.

    warning!
Although people are waiting for iPhone 4 on VZW, that’s not going to be all that much better because as you may have guessed, VZW now has limited data plans. I gotta say, faster network, but having a cap isn’t fun. Having an iPhone with *unlimited* (until you hit around 5 gb, they may throttle you back depending) would be SO sweet. unfortunately, Apple chose the slowest-to-upgrade carrier, ATT is lagging with their updated network.

also, please do not pay attention to the 4G network slander and cross-advertising. Calling one network faster or with more coverage is not a reliable way to say we’re better. It’s all about prices. ATT charges way too much for only 250 mb? sheesh, if you’re going to use data, you are bound to use more than that. My friend with the iPhone 4 repeats to me that it’s always stuck in his head that he hasto remember not to go over his limit. he tries to use as little as possible. maybe the new system is how ATT is keeping iphone owners from crashing their network. funny seeing as how my Evo gets great coverage/speed and i’ve never had a problem with the network. saying that Android isn’t as good as iOS is bull crap. becuase there are a lot of things you can do with iPhones OVER THE INTERNET. but if you feel you shouldn’t be using so much, then maybe your carrier isn’t for you.

Where are the high end 3G phones?

  • http://twitter.com/408jay Jason Lackey

If a dualcore snapdragon is NOT a flagship phone then the flagship should be interesting indeed.

Meanwhile I eagerly await those clowns getting around to updating my Epic, sure would be nice to be able to use the corporate GAL and have GPS work. Pity Samsung molested the OS. Android tastes best vanilla.

I have to disagree slightly my GPS has been pretty good on the Epic, I’m satisfied. And after using plain 2.1 on a Moment for so long Touch Wiz isn’t as terrible as people say. The widgets suck, but the call history, phone apps, and lock screens are way better than stock. The bright colors are kinda annoying but Sammy just did that to show off what Super Amoled can do.. I hurt a few Evo owners feelings with my screen and my friend is iPhone 4 fanatic and he even gave the Fascinate’s screen a nod. I will prolly stick with it stock for another week before I start flashing other roms and take touchwiz off, but it is no Sense but its useful in basic day to day functions..

    GIGGITY!

Seriously tho, like they said….if this wont be the new Flagship then what ever Hesse has in Store for June must be from another planet.

    Front facing cam?

  • Anonymous

So, this is just an updated “Touch Pro 2″ chassis – with a 4G radio, capacitive screen, a updated decent 8MP camera, and will ‘possibly be powered by a dual core processor’?

Seriously, what processor are the rumormills leaking now? You would assume that if the original test models were right, and they were running the standard 1Ghz Snapdragon, then the obvious choice would be the 1.2Ghz Snapdragon MSM8X60 series. These are supposed to hit devices 1H 2011, so this would line up well with the roadmap so far on the Knight.

Good luck on finding out what this thing will have under the hood – and maybe next time you should just start off with a lead of, “We have no idea what the Knight is, but rumor has it that Sprint has a possible Dual-Core, Touch Pro 2 running Android with an 8MP camera coming to it’s WiMax network.” Might make the article a bit shorter for you.

I seriously love your reporting and reviews, but this story is just full of a bunch of speculation with nothing hard to back it up, especially if the Knight was in fact the phone that just cleared the FCC this week.

      hey make ur own site

    • Anonymous

and take your lazy ass to a tmobile store the only similarities between a G2 and a TP2 are on paper mechanical component wise and software wise they are completely different

    • all for fun

Why not just wait for the product release and then you get see what it really is? Rumor mongering and speculation is why we are here — fact and ‘hard’ is not what these kinds of websites and advanced “peek-behind-the curtain” kinds reports are all about. I really did want to burst your bubble here –but really – I just had to make this remark so you know that “keepin’ it real” is not what these kinds of things are all about.

So it’s a touch pro 2 but with a dual core processor, android, and an 8MP camera. The specs that followed Touch Pro 2 would denote that it’s pretty much..not a touch pro 2…genius.

  • Bringit

I guess there is a market for sliding QWERTY keyboards, Seems totally unnecessary to me, and to just add bulk (and something else that could break).

    • Anonymous

idiots still don’t have anything comparable in size/form to iphone.. they just dont freakin get it

      • Anonymous

Droids Epics and G2′s are selling like hot cakes.. Not many shareholders are surfin the blogs keepin tabs on engaged’s fav form factor because he’s the family tech guy who can who can burn dvds and sync mp3 players.. Companies go with what sells and apple is the only one losing money, with their one form factor (even though they do have significant benefits from using one).

    • Anonymous

That is where you are wrong. Have u ever owned an All touchscreen device for a respectable amount of time? I doubt it. When the screen simply “Goes bad” your shit out of luck. NO WAY TO NAVIGATE/TEXT/CALL etc. With a Slide out keyboard you can still utilize those functions. Having a keyboard means more than just having sumthing to type on.

  • Anonymous

This is more personal preference, but after using some of today’s larger devices anything with less than a 4 inch screen just seems too small. Other than that this sounds pretty sweet.

    • Bringit

Also personal pref – but I think 3.7 is perfect for a smartphone. 4 inch + is too big.

      • Anonymous

maybe so going from a 3.2 moment to a 4.0 epic I can say 3.2 is way too small and 4.0 is right on the limit.. Probably 3.8 is the sweet spot.. But if the Epic was designed with one handed use in mind I could get better mileage out of it.. But I don’t have small hands so its cool tho

  • http://twitter.com/jreuschl Jason Reuschlein

I’m not sure I buy the part about it being a dual core at launch. I could see it being 1.2GHz like the Droid 2 Global received vs. the Droid 2, but I would think a dual core would require a redo of the mainboard and not just a basic chip swap.

Hey, if I’m wrong, sign me up!

  • Dwayneearlwilliams

    Dual core? Exciting.

  • Anonymous

The new name is evo shift 4G. As reported a few days ago, even by this site.

  • evo415

all i would ask for is a EVO 4G World Edition…i think the original evo is almost perfect! If they keep this Knight under .6 inches thick it would definitely sell like hotcakes…

  • Guest323

Any ideas on when this is going to be released? I’m ready to trade my Evo in. I love it, but I miss a physical keyboard. If I didn’t have Sprint, I would have gotten a G2 through T-Mobile.

    • Sburme02

you know sprint has the epic right?

  • http://twitter.com/kstagg Kevin Stagg

Looking forward to hearing more on this, but as others have stated – not interested in DOWN-sizing my screen and am curious if it has a front-facing cam. Not willing to give up front-facing cam (especially since gingerbread is rumored to have totally retooled the video-chat functionality and brought it as an internal function of the phone – no more need of 3rd party app).

  • Creesto

There. Is. No. 4G. Period. No one has it, it is all marketing hype.

    • Anonymous

Oh, STFU. Whether you whining bitches like it or not, its 4G. The itu just made their fake definition up a few weeks ago. You think you’re so smart, do you? According to them, there is no true 3G in the US either. But, haven’t seen people bitch about calling it 3G. Get a life, stop being a troll.

      • http://twitter.com/SParKlngCyaNide SparklingCyanide

Creesto is correct, Sprint’s 4G is NOT 4G.

      • Anonymous

It’s a few whining bitches against the 4 major carriers. You lose.

      • PLEASE

I think tim 242 is highly aware of that. What he is saying is why are you complaining if they call it 5G and every carrier calls it 5G then so what who gives a crap. GET A LIFE!! I remember I used to come look at the blogs for BGR and Engadget for useful information like release dates, hardware, and software scoops. Now its just whining about what the phone doesnt have and wheather or not its true 4G. WHAT HAPPENED?

      • EncourageTrolls

The concern here is false advertising. Preliminary specs of 4G already exceeded WiMax and LTE’s capabilities. Under membership in the UN, of which the ITU is an agency, the US’s FTC has a mandate to execute it’s FTC Act against any form of fraudulent activity, including false advertising where the promoter makes a claim such as 4G without supporting description of what their service offers that makes it 4G. The “trolls” make a valid point (if they’d explain it fully) that the carriers ARE doing a wrong by making baseless claims of 4G capability. All the carriers are doing right now is upgrading their networks and speed, which is what they can legally promote, however, promoting those upgrades as “4G” is criminal once you peel back all the bullshit. Word of advice to the “trolls”: Be clear when you make the comments that those carriers using the term don’t really have 4G. We know they don’t have it according to the ITU-R. The FTC should be enforcing it’s authority here, though. They are MIA. Shocked anyone?

      • Bhoffman

youre such a dumb ass! you dont know wtf youre talking about!!!!!

      • Joe Blow McGyver

It’s a fourth generation network, therefore it is 4G in that sense. If you’re referring to speed, then according to the definition recently released regarding 4G, then it is NOT. However, that definition was also only recently finalized AFTER 4G was deployed by Sprint. I can say this, if talking about 4G as a “Fourth Generation” network, i.e. different technology standard then the previously used standard, the one carrier that is outright lying, above all other carriers is T-Mobile. Their HSPA+ network is a 3G upgrade, and NOT a new technology standard, and therefore, fits neither the generation nor speed definition for the term ’4G’. At least Sprint and Verizon are actually deploying a whole new generation of technology, thereby, in the sense of technology standards, is 4G. As far as speed, well, that’s another story.

      • Jimpjr

AT&T iPhone4 web speeds crush the EVO”4G” speeds Hands Down!!

    • Bhoffman

wtf are you talking about, I get 4G all the time you dumb a s s!

    • Bigdaddygill13

Acording to the new standards set by the ruling people, No there are no up and running 4G services, but Wimax II and LTE Advanced will be , the standard of 100 mbps was just set in the last month where the current 4G services met the prior standards !!!!!
