T-Mobile’s Galaxy Tab tweaked to make phone calls by XDA

General

The tinkering community that is xda-developers has managed to shoehorn the phone.apk Android module onto T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy Tab. Forum member Jyveafk has figured out how to flash the device, using Odin3, to allow calling over T-Mo’s EDGE network. In it’s current state, XDA cautions that the procedure is “for experienced flashers only.” If you’re the adventurous type, and give this a shot, let us know how you make out.

Very cool, I wonder how long will it be before T-Mobile shuts that down

      I think you’re mistaking T-Mobile for VZW or AT&T.

The OLD T-Mobile would’ve allowed it. The NEW T-Mobile (post 3Q reports and new execs) have gone after everything including tethering, more aggressive throttling, and multiple nonsensical tiered plans.

This is now the Zach Morris cell phone of the touch screen era.

The VZW Tabs are being recalled

The Tab’s lack of voice calling abilities is why I dismissed the thing out of hand. I can’t afford *another* monthly fee. We’re supposed to pay for voice+data on our cell AND pay for data on the Tab when the tab can do voice? I want to ditch my iPhone, not drop hundreds and then keep paying for it! Lame and a shame since this thing plus a bluetooth headset would be quite a cool combo.

Well, you can hold it up to your ear with one hand.

I dismissed this one (couple reasons…I’m at&t) because it didn’t have a phone.
I went with a streak, which was huge the first time I used it, but it isn’t huge anymore.
I use BT, so holding it to my ear isn’t a problem.

The Streak has shrunk since the day you purchased it? Is it shrinking at such a rate that it may disappear? Knowing Dell, they will suggest that this isn’t a feature you can expect with an Apple product.

Does the phone.apk include By functionality? Currently the Tab doesn’t support any BT headset profile.

The Euro flash has full BT functionality.

Is that a galaxy tab in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

Fully functional voice has been flashed onto the AT&T, Rogers, and Bell Galaxy Tabs. Its pretty damned handy to have the option of making calls, and with a wired or Bluetooth headset, you only look marginally goofy. ;)
