RAGE HD first-person shoots its way to top-grossing App Store spot

Gaming

After less than a day of availability, id Software’s RAGE HD shot to the number 1 spot on Apple’s top-grossing App Store chart. The highly-anticipated first-person shooter costs just $1.99 for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad or current-generation iPod touch. RAGE HD is widely heralded, and is said to take iOS gaming to the next level. While mobile games will likely never quite catch up to console games in many respects, id’s first-person shooter is a stunning display of the underutilized gaming capabilities found within iOS devices. As fun as flinging birds at pigs can be, gamers are speaking loud and clear. More importantly for developers, they’re speaking with their wallets. RAGE HD replaced Rovio Mobile’s Angry Birds as the App Store’s top-grossing app in less than a day, and it is already number 2 on the top paid app charts. The instant success of the game will undoubtedly push developers to release a more advanced breed of games, which is good news for gamers and for the iOS platform. RAGE HD is available immediately in Apple’s App Store for $1.99. A standard definition version simply called RAGE is available for just $0.99.

But… but… the Android and Microsoft Fanboys told me that the iPhone was only for fart apps!

Those are the same types of people that suggest Windows isn’t losing share to Apple every single quarter even though sales show otherwise. They will also tell you that all the reports of showing Apple raking in 50% of all available profits in the mobile industry are lies. Apple paid people to say that.

People say all sorts of dumb things. Hell, CEO’s of huge companies say dumb things out of fear in regard to Apple being the T-Rex that is consuming the 800 pound Gorilla for breakfast and snacking on the Gorilla’s partners.

Apple has one competitor, Apple. It has always been that way and will always be that way. They build or re-imagine a product and then every other company possible tries to emulate. One company wants to be the leader and sadly for users of other products it is what makes your favorite companies followers.

        What an idiotic post.

      Really? Where?

There are idiots in all camps. It was never just for fart apps… but you guys certainly have a hell of a lot of them. Games like this, while absolutely impressive (only an idiot would say otherwise), do not represent the typical caliber of what comes out for iOS.

Two dollars. I want my two dollars.

First Person Shooter? Is that a joke?

This is nerfed out rail shooter with some decent graphics lifted from id’s new first person shooter.

When id basically created the fps genre, they evolved from a dumb space marine who couldn’t even look up and down to making player motion into an art in Quake.

This is worse than when they rented out their IP for the Doom movie with the Rock, but I guess you gotta make money.

Still not bad for a rail shooter! Also this could be the direction mobile gaming is heading in… Hell look at their first day sales! I don’t know about you but without a control pad I have a he’ll of a time controlling things with glass, a gyro and accelerometer. Admittedly I’m not a gamer by any definition I mean the last thing I played was CS source on an Athlon desktop 6 years ago! Anyways it seems customers like it, great for the devs too!

People are not buying this because they want to purchase it. They are buying it because Apple (and now Id) are making people buy it. /sarcasm

        Open stores
        Attract new users
        sell more products
        rinse, repeat.

Get on board now folks. Enough of us can remember back to when we used a popular enough product that almost became extinct. Thank God that company got their visioned leader back.

That was a once in a life time event. No one is coming back to save Microsoft and Google will never be Microsoft. Nokia is collapsing and RIM will be the only true #2. Don’t end up like the Amiga users.

I agree with everything that you said. This is the way that “mobile gaming” is going.

An all inclusive group hug where people can farm their crops or shoot their aliens without trying to hard or having to get good at anything in order to succeed.

I have no doubt in my mind that dynamic appeals to more people than anything “hard”.

The really funny thing is that even though you haven’t played CS in 6 years, if you were allowed into a “modern” console FPS with a mouse and keyboard, you would likely dominate because everyone else is handicapped by their controller interface and the games have been made much easier because of it.

Fast forward 20 years and we’ll have televised tournaments of people pressing a 3″ circle on a 4″ touchscreen for 15 minutes between intermissions.

But at least everyone will be equally good at it.

“not bad for a rail shooter” is like saying a kid with down syndrome who recited his ABC’s perfectly is “not bad for a mentally handicap kid”.

We all get it. Woz doesn’t know anything about mobile technology and Carmack doesn’t know anything about gaming. When Carmack complained about how lousy the old Mac OS was for gaming he was right but when he suggest that nothing comes close to iOS for mobile gaming he is wrong?

People, you are talented in your own fields and no one is trying to take that away from you. Carmack and Woz are never going to come to your drive up window and tell you that you don’t know anything about your job. These two men are genius’ at what they do, let them give guidance. If you will give them that much respect I promise to never come into you establishment and complain that you screwed up my order again.

Anyone know if the HD version will run fine on a 3GS?

    • mentat

According to TUAW it will run but it will lag and show a low memory warning

  • elijahblake

so they release the game on the iphone before the consoles?? Say what??

  • Fdkalfj2kl111

I am afraid this is where android falls and will take very long time to catch up. I am an android user and its gaming are craptacular.

  • wanderer

Whats going on! The iphone is not supposed to do things like that and the fandroids/haters tell me that its only good for fart apps and Angry Birds at best. This game took a freakin’ long time to download and install, but so worth it. Too bad its only a preview of whats to come.

How does an app in 1 day… for $2… become *THE* “top grossing” app ever made?

… grossing more money than apps that have been in the “top position”… and “top 10″… for the past 100 days in a row?

Or does “top grossing” really only mean “top grossing” in the past week?

“Top grossing” should always mean “top grossing”.

“While mobile games will likely never quite catch up to console games in many respects,”

    Likely? Ya think?
