Verizon announces ‘Smartphones Talk Free’ promotion

General

Today, Verizon Wireless took the wraps off of its “Smartphones Talk Free” promotion that we briefly told you about yesterday. The new promotion aims to save those Family SharePlan customers looking to add an additional smartphone line for a child, spouse, or acquaintance some cold hard cash. As the press release reads:

To take advantage of the Smartphones Talk Free promotion, customers will need a Nationwide Family SharePlan starting at $69.99 monthly access for 700 Anytime Minutes and add a $29.99 data plan for each additional smartphone. Customers currently on a Nationwide Family SharePlan may have a total of up to five lines, and receive the promotional credit on each new line that uses a new smartphone.

The offer credits each new smartphone line — that subscribes to a $29.99 data plan — $9.99 per month; the offer expires on January 7, 2011. Verizon notes that consumers can save nearly $240 per line over the life of a two-year contract. Hit the break for the full PR.

Add A Smartphone On The Nation’s Largest And Most Reliable 3G Network And Save Big

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Black Friday and the holiday shopping rush are right around the corner, and Verizon Wireless is giving customers an early incentive to share the nation’s largest and most reliable wireless voice and 3G data network. Beginning Nov. 19, customers can add a new 3G Smartphone on a secondary line and receive a credit equal to the cost of adding a line to a Nationwide Family SharePlan. The $9.99 monthly credit for the new line can save customers nearly $240 per line over the life of the two-year contract.

“This is an ideal option for customers with a spouse or child wanting to move to a smartphone,” said Marni Walden, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. “The Verizon Wireless portfolio has a host of options from which to choose, including the recently announced Samsung Continuum™, the DROID PRO by Motorola or the BlackBerry Bold – all perfectly suited for work or play.”

The $9.99 credit expires after 24 months. The offer ends Jan. 7, 2011.

First loser to post in this thread. Congrats! I like how the cimments list newest first. That means you “first” losers are actually last!

  • Steel

Can current customers get in on this I wonder?

    • Bringit

      Good question.

    • http://www.bgr.com Andrew Munchbach

Judging by the wording: if you have a family plan, and want to upgrade one of your “dumb-phone” lines to a smartphone, you can take advantage of the promotion. If, for example, you already have a family plan with three smartphone lines on it… they aren’t going to give you any love.

  • BDUS

So in stead of $250 a month for web and unlimited text, it will now be $220. What a deal.

I get that with nav, tv, nights starting at 7 for $129 a month on Sprint. What a joke.

    • SprintSux

exactly with SPRINT. Sprint fuckn sux balls. Verizon isn’t trying to compete with sprint. Their only real competitor is AT&T. You guys are a joke to them.

      • Johnny 16

Which is why VZW is copying Everything Plans and Any mobile anytime in select markets….Sprint must be doing something right….Don’t hate because you’re being raked over the coals every month when that Verizon bill comes in

      • SprintSux

Nope my bill with verizon isn’t too bad. Sprint in my area sucks. and their supposed “4G” is bs. In real life testing it barely did better than tmobile’s “4G”

  • mLive12

Just shows you how much profit is in data. Why isn’t there a family data plan yet?

    • Tedkord

There IS! I signed up yesterday – It’s a test offer, only made to some customers. 1400 minutes, unlimited text/mms, unlimited data – $139.99/month for the first two phones, $19.99/month for each additional (up to 5 phones total).

It’s the exact same plan I had before, except now all three phones have data, instead of just one – and it actually costs a few dollars LESS than before.

I still get 10 Friends and Family, nights/weekends free, etc…I was planning on going to Sprint in February when my contract was up (especially when they had the ridiculous $10/month for “multimedia” phones) after a one month test of the network in my area. Now, I don’t need to.

The wife and daughter are getting Droid2′s within the next week or two. I’m holding onto my Omnia II until after the new year, because it looks like there may be some MONSTER devices coming then.

  • BDUS

    That’s for 3 lines BTW.

  • Chris

Of course, this would happen after I just upgraded my mother-in-law to a data plan.

    • Anonymous

Call them. Verizon has very good customer service. I bet you can get it if you ask.

    • Flippflopp29

      30 day price match

  • Anonymous

This is bogus. You still pay almost $30 for the data for each line. You are just getting the add a line free like Tmobile has been doing for a while now on all add a lines, not just Smartphones.

    Lame.

  • http://twitter.com/chrismanning Chris Manning

Sprint takes the opposite approach. Instead of talking for free, additional lines pay 19.99 and get unlimited data free. I like that approach better.

    • Radar

Obviously you are one of the few who do…How many customers did SPRINT LOSE this year so far??

      • Johnny 16

They actually gain 644K customers, and has an even lower churn than before…

      • SprintSux

their churn rates are still pathetic compared to verizon and those 644k added customers include prepaid customers which is a lot of fake growth

      • Ullyses1

This past quarter marked the first quarter in over 2 YEARS that Sprint didn’t Lose Net Customers. Feel free to brag about that one time they didn’t lose customers.

      • Johnny 16

        @ Ullyses1 – Actually 2nd Quarter marked their 1st Gain with 111K post-paid….

      • SprintSux

and how much money did they still lose while adding 111k post-paid customers?

      • Jaburk

I happen to be one of the ones that likes Sprint’s approach as well. I have great service and I pay alot less each month that I did with AT&T.

      • Cpetal16

Actually, Sprint gained thousands of customers due to their release of the HTC Evo 4G. I went into the Apple store with a friend and a few of the people that worked there were talking about how they were planning on switching to Sprint because the iPhone sucks and the Evo was awesome.

  • WTF

Verizon… If you give us 30$ a month, we will give you 10…

    Very nice verizon… Very nice.

    • Rob

This gives no incentive for someone to sign up for a smartphone if price was an obsiticle before… For a family share plan with 5 people if even the first 2 lines have smart phones, then to add 3 more smart phone its going to be an extra $60 a month or 1440 for 2 years…
This seems good if you have data already and could get a discount…

  • Ellemem

So are they going to give those of us who already have a family plan with smart phones a discount going forward, or are we stuck paying the additional $10 a month?

    • Guest

Your contract works both ways. It protects you from price and fee increases, but it also excludes you from price and fee decreases. That is until you take some action to change your contract.

If there’s one thing VZW is extremely good at, it’s making people feel like idiots for maintaining any sort of loyalty. They’re hardly the only ones, but what about the people (like my family) who have been with the company since 1999 or something preposterous like that?

I think all companies should take note: reward your fucking long-term customers sometimes. We tell people about how good your service is, when we’ve been around this long. Word-of-mouth advertising is the best kind. When I heard about this, I got all excited, thinking I could get some credit on my bill.

I should have known better, honestly. I can only blame myself.

  • Tinky_30

“The offer ends Jan. 7, 2011.”

How much you wanna bet that the iPhone for Verizon debuts on January 9th, lol?

    • VirginMerry

      No way….January 8th….

Everyone is at it again… Verizon this, Sprint that, AT&T something else… You can bash any service you want but in the end each subscriber simply needs to get the BEST PLAN FOR THEM.

Let’s quit making this all about the “Evil other companies that I don’t do business with” and each of us just look at our own needs and get the best plan we can. I can guarantee that the best plan for me will NOT be the best plan for EVERYONE else. Truth is, most of us spend 90%+ of our time in a specific geographic region – get what is best for your location and when you do travel about, this is what roaming is for.

Personally, Sprint has great coverage in my area and their price can’t be beat (5 smartphones, unlimited data, text, Nav, etc. shared 1500 min that we never go over since ALL mobile-mobile is free – $190 month). My brother on the other hand – lives 25 miles away in the bottom of a canyon and FOR HIM paying a bit more for Verizon is best since they have the best signal at that location. Do I care? Why should I? I’ve got what I need and he has what he needs. End of story.

  • Vzw Rep

If you have a smartphone on your main line and you either add a line or upgrade a 2nd or 3rd Line from a “dumbphone” then you can get this promotion. If you already have smartphones on all your lines…. then nope, you don’t get the credit. Also, if you just upgraded the line within last 30 days you can call and get the credit applied. U must be in the WFG and you have to have the 29.99 package.

  • http://twitter.com/KingCrawley Michael Crawley

I wonder how this promotion works with the previous 1400 minutes, unlimited text and data plan family share plan for $139.99 and $20.00 per line. Since this plan already includes unlimited smartphone data you shouldn’t have add the $30 data plan and still get the $10 credit.

  • Jcon08

It is becoming painfully obvious that my 12 year relationship with Verizon is coming to an end. I don’t need 100% coverage from coast to coast, I need a balance of service with cost in the area where I live and work! I’ve been waiting for Verizon’s “BIG” data plans revisions that were scheduled for Q4 and was horrified with their $15/150 Mb data plan and now this? I had 4 “dumb” phones on the amily ultd messaging plan and just upgraded my son’s line to a smartphone plan after his phone died 1 month ago and i have to tell you, Sprint’s family everything data plan is starting to look like the only game in town. Yes, their coverage is not the same as Verizon’s “nationwide” coverage, but they do service my state and the surrounding area pretty damn close. I don’t know how many folks actually know that Sprint does have a roaming agreement with Verizon so it really is not that bad. To the folks knocking Sprint’s network, it has one of the best data networks around with the most consumer friendly plans period. And regarding their next generation network’s bandwith, using my business 4G aircard on my laptop at an airport in the north east, I clocked 4MB download and 1.25MB upload speeds. If you ask me, that’s a hell of alot better than anything I’ved used from Verizon or AT&T. If you don’t care about spending over $250 per month on a family plan for 4 smartphones, and having bragging rights over nationwide coverage is important, that’s fine for you but not for me. Sprint, here I come!

  • Abailey

So does this mean I can make calls to friends without Verizon whenever I want to?
