Fantasy Football app for BlackBerry Playbook get demoed

Software

If you have been waiting to see what a 3rd party developer has in store for RIM’s upcoming Playbook tablet launch, this is the first significant video demo we have found — and it looks great. From Universal Mind, they write on their blog about the development experience:

It was entirely built using Adobe Flash Builder and the BlackBerry SDK. The workflow allowed us to deploy a working tablet application in days with full touch and gesture interactions that you would expect in a tablet device.

The framework SDK is integrated into Flash Builder which made for a very familiar dev environment. Compiling the application and deploying it to the PlayBook Simulator is quick and easy with multiple ways to see your application in a working environment. Without a actual device in hand we relied on the Simulator to test all the interactions, so it was a key piece of the workflow.

Kinetic scrolling with rubber-banding effect is built into the SDK, they note, which makes it easy on developers to concentrate on adding greater functionality and features, as opposed to focusing on little transitional/design elements like they have to in the past with RIM’s previous OS development. All in all, it looks good. A little iPad-ish, but we’d take that any day over regular BlackBerry apps. Question for RIM… are 3rd party QNX apps called super, super apps? Video is after the breakage!

    iPad-ish?

Why does BGR has to bring apple all the time when discussing about BlackBerry Playbook? What does it says about BGR then :)

      • MisterWhatItIs

So the next time I say something great about BlackBerry or the next time anything comes out that talks about what makes it great, you can keep you iOS loving ass shut. It’s not only a BlackBerry thing it is every product that comes out. Apple people always have to but in and says something about how there product is somehow better. It gets brought up because people like you come in and have to mention it anyways. BGR is just doing you a favor and giving you a leadway into the convo. You should be thanking them.

I am a Mac user and love my Mac but I will not use that crap of a device they call a phone, nor will I use a tablet that does 30% of the things that are on the web and 70% must be done through a damn app. 1 I would be better off with an iTouch, but my BlackBerry does all that already plus phone calls. 2 I would rather lug around my slim light weith Mac then carry something around that cannot hold its jock.

LOL, Fantasy Football?! Wow….only “iPad” beats the homo-ness of that name…

    • Ssss

are you telling me that you don’t know what Fantasy Football is?

      hahahahha

      • sirpaul

Apparently it’s a game. With a gay name hahaha

I guess Virtual Football is too corny.

      • Ssss

Not really a game. Fantasy sports are based on real life. You draft your team and you get points based on how your players do in real life. that’s why it’s called fantasy.

      • knick4life

Well considering 15 million U.S. adults play fantasy sports, I think its a good market for an app

  • Len

Ipadish? Its a tablet app.you’re just picking things for the sake of arguing. Pretty lame in my opinion on bgr’s part.

Will the Ipad2 be magically magical?

    • Ssss

They can’t post anything RIM related without bringing Apple into the discussion.

I’d like to know how an app built on Flash is even remotely “iPad-ish”?

      • Pas

Flash is a general programming technology. Everything (including iPad-ish user interface) can be built in Flash.

All this amounts to is more free advertising for RIM and means nothing until it get in the hands of a reviewer and on the shelves, less hype please.

  • Wishbones

Loving the look of this..I for one will be getting a playbook!

  • Max

I love watching fantasy football on a 3″ screen. Well done, RIM-job.

    • Booboolala2000

Sorry, you don’t watch fantasy football, you play and hopefully win money. And norm, don’t you have an ill equiped ipad that you sleep with?

    • Ricky

What are you talking about moron? This is an app for the playbook, which is 7″. You sir are a ruh-tard.

    • http://twitter.com/dayneoftexas Dayne Watkins

And I love watching iMAX make an idiot of himself while trying to seem cool and in the know. Surely there’s an app for keeping up with the latest specs of the gadgets right???? Surely….

  • Norm

weak….the DROID Fantasy Football App is a far superior application. It’s optimized for the fleet of DROID tablets that are killing the ipads in sales right now.

shut up! im not an ios fan but i know for sure that those droid tablets arent killing anything….

  • mista

Nice app…For all that don’t have a clue, please know what fantasy football is before you post!

Hasn’t Apple got patents on that rubber-band effect as well as those scroll bars? More suing and counter-suing on the horizon.

So RIM comes out and declares that something called “Playbook” will be great for business. Then some guy at RIM says we don’t need apps, just the internet and yet one of the first things they demo is an APP related to Football, which is clearly something every business needs.

Is this is RIM’s idea of saying on message, then Apple has nothing to worry about!

    • Len

RIM didn’t post this video. Please try again.

    • Whatis

      1. rim didn’t say we don’t need apps

      2. rim didn’t create this app

      3. you’re an idiot

    • MisterWhatItIs

RIM never said we don’t need apps, it was apps are not needed. Meaning you do not need an app to do the things that you love. Of course there will be apps available for the device since everyone thinks you need the “apps” for your device to be successful. RIM has always kept the business person in mind when disinging products, why? That is were they began and not leaving their roots behind. It’s not that BlackBerry devices are not cool it’s that people are lazy, especially Americans. I am an American myself but the fact that people here go, I love T-9 but sure type is difficult and don’t understand are stupid.

Getting back to the topic, apps make devices cool which is important to the consumers, especially in the states. The fact of the matter is RIM keeps the key eliments in mind when desinging product. With tiered data plans coming to all carriers sooner than later with no more of the one price unlimited usage anymore getting people to realize how efficent BlackBerry devices are is the most important thing.

From what I can see… this is basic flash, so, this could be deployed to any device that supports flash. Sure, it’s an app, but, it’s a web app.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CQWL2BHTLVQEB3M3LCTCZFV634 Dereck

that app is not ipad-ish at all nice looking yes! not all blackberry apps look like crap …

  • Steve Jobs

BGR should change its name to “Apple FanBoy Report” since mostly whats review or written in here is BIASED towards apple anyways.

  • GRRyan

OK BGR we get it, you love apple. This wasn’t one of your really bad posts (only 1 Apple reference), but you still sound like some girl that wont stop talking about their boyfriend and try to work them in to every conversation.

  • guest

Nice looking app. For those not familiar with Fantasy Football, it is a $4 Billion dollar a year industry. Not exactly a niche market or something business-types don’t participate in. Is this ESPN, NFL, Yahoo!, CBS Sports? Can’t tell but I’d use it for my league!

    Hey BG,

We’ve just been calling them BlackBerry Tablet OS apps, but I like you’re style. Maybe ‘super duper apps’? =D

Regardless, apps like Fantasy Football on PlayBook are an obvious win, which is not something you can say about the Bengals. Zing!

Hey BGR stop embarrassing yourself. What are you going to do when other products surpass apple?
It’s only a matter of time since apple will not cede control. When programmers have an alternative they are going to love giving Steve Jobs one up the a**.
Will you shut down your website then?
