Video game industry takes 4% hit in October; Xbox outsells Wii and PS3 for fifth straight month

Gaming

Ahead of the 2010 holiday season, NPD Group reports that the U.S. gaming industry took a hit in October. While software sales were up 6% and accessory sales were up 18% in the month, console sales tumbled 26% to $280 million. Overall, gaming industry sales were down 4% in October. Despite the industry’s overall hit, however, Microsoft is sitting pretty as its console sales beat Nintendo and Sony for the fifth straight month. In fact, the Xbox 360 was the only console with year-over-year growth in October. Add to that over 1 million Kinect units sold and over 4 million more Kinects expected to move before the end of the year, and you’ve got one happy gaming team over at HQ in Redmond. Hit the jump for NPD’s top-10 game titles by sales volume in the month of October.

1. NBA 2K11 (Xbox, Wii, PS2, PS2, PSP, PC)
2. Fallout: New Vegas (Xbox, PS3, PC)
3. Medal of Honor (Xbox, PS3, PC)
4. Fable III (Xbox)
5. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II (Xbox, PS3, Wii, PC, NDS)
6. Halo: Reach (Xbox)
7. Just Dance 2 (Wii)
8. FIFA Soccer 11 (Xbox, Wii, PS3, PS2, PSP, NDS, PC)
9. Madden NFL 11 (Xbox, Wii, PS3, PS2, PSP)
10. WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2011 (Xbox, Wii, PS3, PS2, PSP)

Call of duty Black Ops would have been number one if it was released in October. Other than that, I’m surprised WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2011 made it to the top 10 list.

People still watch wrestling? It’s terrible, I do have to admit when The Rock was wrestling I did watch quite a bit. MMA is so much better though.

      • Mgl323

Seeing how Monday Night Raw has been the longest running show in history, yeah people still watch wrestling.

      • Anonymous

Are you serious? Raw is not even in the top 100 longest running shows. Meet the Press has been on for 4 decades longer), nor is it even the longest running wrestling show in history. There is this new thing called wikipedia. You should check it out next time before trying to be a smart ass.

Wow. A website comprised of iPhone AND XBox fanboys. Why do I come here again?

    • sirpaul

News is news. And what now, you can’t like a product without being called a fanboy???

    • Anonymous

I guess the same reason you commented.

  • http://twitter.com/hijackerjack Rohil Thopu

not that i dislike ps3 or wii, but am i supposed to be surprised about this news? LOL.

  • Anonymous

Sitting pretty, sure. I guess we’re just gonna ignore the fact that PS3 has outsold 360 this year worldwide, as it has been doing, and the Wii is still miles ahead of either. But good job Microsoft.

    • Beef Twinkie

No one really ignored that fact… its just not part of this particular story. I’m sorry, but every time there’s a reported statistic for a current period, we have to go back and report entire history?

But since you did… then let’s makes the points you ignored as well:
      1. This report states LAST 5 MONTHS… which means PS3′s overall outselling of Xbox 360 accrued in the first half of the year prior to June, which if I remember correctly, coincides w/ PS3′s price drops and prior to the new Xbox Slim. (i didn’t check my fact on this, just going from memory, so if I’m wrong, oh well).

      2. Having been out longer than the PS3, Xbox is hitting the saturation point where most people have one, and a lot of those people are now willing to pick up a 2nd console, such as the PS3

      3. Wii sales all occured in the first few years of Wii’s life… its well known that 2010 has not been kind to the Wii, your point is moot here. ‘Miles ahead’ and losing ground FAST.

Don’t say people ‘fail to see’ something and then fail to see the whole picture yourself. It just makes you a fanboy.

      • Anonymous

I know the whole picture, thats why I said worldwide. Did you miss that? So I’m a fanboy for looking at the bigger picture? Really now. That term gets thrown around way to much these days when you can easily just disagree with someones opinion. And saturation point? Thats not even a serious comment and im sure Microsoft would disagree with you. Again, this is all in the U.S, so my point is why can’t there be stories all around? Why is it always how good Xbox is doing and in the U.S only? So you want to call me out for overlooking some phantom facts, yet by your own admission, if your facts are off, then “oh well.” Right.

The wii is considered a game console still?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2SQQCAN7ZQ4PGUKAY7NIMEWDUU cyberstoic

The Wii plays games? Who’d have thought it. I just thought it was a fancy remote control to watch netflix. Wow.

Love Xbox.. Always had the better console to me, personal opinion.

  • Digitaltouch

I just got myself a new ps3 with call of duty special ops. Went for the ps3 as it’s better then the x360 in a lot of the specs plus the blue ray thing. But I do believe kinect is better the what the playstaion wand thing.

    • Sonya

      Blu-ray, not blue

    • Anonymous

i have both consoles in my house and while i did like the fact that PS3 had free online and blu-ray, the user experience on Xbox is much better. Even Netflix runs smoother and looks better.

      • Fernandez2126

Is this before or after the update? The new interface on the PS3 that doesn’t need a disk is far nicer what the old one was, though I haven’t seen the xbox’s interface.

  • offdayJB

when i finally stop procrastinating, i will be trading my old Xbox360 20gb Pro for the new slim 250gb with the Kinnect. so i’m not surprised M$ Gaming is still hot. i’m not even thinking about a PS3 or Wii anymore!

  • Rhymeswithemo

The only reason xbox 360 is still selling is because it craps out more than any other console on the market, and people have to keep buying new ones.

    • CrackaJack

Considering Microsoft repairs your console for free. Id say that assumption is a load of crap.

      • Anonymous

Xbox 360 reliablility hasn’t been an issue anymore since 3 hardware revisions back (2 years or something), it’s pretty sad people still keep bringing this up.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2SQQCAN7ZQ4PGUKAY7NIMEWDUU cyberstoic

People keep bringing it up because older machines keep getting RROD and dying. And now when they die, they are out of warranty. For those who have send consoles back 5 times to be repaired, and then have them die out of warranty and have to replace them it might still be a bit of a sore subject. Getting it repaired for free was nice, although it meant not having it for a month at a time while they fixed it. Reliability was an issue throughout the lifespan of the original xbox, and was rated with a failure rate of anywhere from 33% to 50% depending on whose numbers you were using. By the time the Jasper series came out, to be fair, the reliability had increased and the failure rates were down to somewhere in the 4 to 10% range. At this point, no one knows what the reliability of the new 360slim is.

      • Beef Twinkie

        @ cyberstoic

You have some good points, but none of them related to why ‘people keep bringing it up’. That part of your comment is purely talking out of your ass.

People keep bringing it up because they are a bunch of trolling fanboys. Its the same in regards to iPhone’s cut and paste and iPhone antennagate or Android OS fragementation, etc etc.

People keep bringing it up simply because they are assholes.

u obviously never owned one… ive had my xbox for 4 years now… my household has had 4 ps3… i think sony is the crappy one

      • lurch

Yeah? Well, you’re a dumbass. The failure rate for an XBox 360 is between 35% and 55%. PS3 is less than 10%. If you “think” Sony is the crappy one, you’re obviously a moron.

2 years with my Xbox and still going strong.

I sold my wii years ago and never looked back. What a terrible system.
