Hulu drops $2 from Hulu Plus monthly price, now $7.99

TV

Here’s a bit of good news: Hulu has just announced that its Hulu Plus premium subscription service will shed $2 from its monthly price tag. As the press release reads: “The monthly price for Hulu Plus moving forward is just $7.99. Any current subscribers who joined during our preview period will receive a credit for the difference from the $9.99 preview price. This credit will automatically be applied to their next billing cycle.”

But the juice doesn’t stop there.  Hulu has also announced the following promotions:

One free week trials for all new subscribers. In addition, current subscribers who joined during the preview period will receive a credit for one week of Hulu Plus toward their next month’s subscription.
Two free weeks of Hulu Plus for both current subscribers and friends they invite through our referral program. Subscribers can learn more by clicking on the “Referrals” tab on their Hulu profile page.
11 weeks ($20 worth) of free Hulu Plus with the purchase of a Sony BRAVIA connected TV or Blu-ray player through January 31, 2011. (See sony.com/huluplus.)
One free month of Hulu Plus with the purchase of a Roku device through December 15, 2010. (See roku.com/hulu.)

The release also notes that the service is launching on Roku today and will be coming to “Internet-connected Vizio, LG Electronics, and Panasonic Blu-ray players and HDTVs; TiVo Premiere DVRs; the Xbox 360; and Western Digital’s WD TV Live Hub Media Center and WD TV Live Plus Network Media Player,” in the coming months. Updates to the Hulu Plus iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Samsung, and PlayStation 3 players will be made available this week.

Anyone reconsidering Hulu Plus after the price drop?

still free on my laptop, thats connected to my TV.

Price and commercials make it a NO go.

    • KF

And yet you pay more for cable or satellite and both have commercials.

I need to consider how comprehensive the offerings are. I’d love to cut the cable, but Hulu must provide the programming my family likes to watch. Everything from The Walking Dead to Phineas and Ferb.

I cut my cable this month.

My cable was costing my $90/mo.

I purchased an very small outdoor antenna and get all locals on HD = $0/mo
      Netflix streaming only = $7/mo
      playOn* service = ~$2/mo

$90 – $9 = $81/mo savings for essentially same content in most areas and more content in other areas.

playOn gives me a bunch of different networks as well as full Hulu access.

With my PS3 all the content is easy to access and goes from DVD to HD quality depending.

I did the same thing, have now sav ed well over $1k on cable bill.

Luckily, I live in manhattan so I get all local channels, plus several more, in HD even *without* an antenna.

I havent missed cable for 10 seconds.

  • shame on hulu

$2 isn’t quite enough. $4.99 is the sweet spot.

Hulu Plus works great on my Samsung TV. The app is well made and works great, no PC required. My cable bill was set to increase by this amount, so if I can cancel, then this is a no brainer. 7.99 with HD shows and no PC required…heck, that’s about the same as the set-top box charge. The commercials are much shorter than those on the cable channels…

Still not at all worth it. If it’s free on my computer then it should be free everywhere. Or if I pay then remove all the ads!

    No thanks.

I subscribed. I’ve got a Roku, an iPad and an iPhone, so I figure it’s worth it. I got Hulu Plus instead of Netflix (though Netflix is great) because I don’t usually have time to watch a whole movie, but I sometimes have time to watch a TV show, or even a clip from a TV show.

    • Anonymous

Do you kno that Netflix carries shows? Complete seasons in fact.. New show clips can be found for free too.

      • Goodman

I know that Netflix has some shows too (I watched Heroes & Dexter on it). Netflix is more about movies though, which I rarely have time for. With Hulu the focus is TV, with lots of new half hour shows & clips. Not knocking Netflix (I’m sure I’ll have both over the holidays). But in general Hulu is a better fit for me.

im watching parks n recreation right now on netflix…

How did you ever find time to write this reply???

Still too expensive. I’m not paying them to watch ads, period. The cable days are coming to an end.

Still too damn expensive for shows.. Lower it by 7.99, then it will be awesome.

  • http://walledcity.com/supermighty Supermighty

I will pay up to $45 a month for unlimited ad-free TV and movie content, but I will not even pay $5 the same content with ads.

There is no price I will pay for ad supported TV over the Internet. Because it’s always been free before and because I want the experience of the TV show, not the ads.

5 bucks a month would have been great…

  • Josh Shearin

and loose the ads for the paid version!

    • Brad

      *lose

Sorry, hate to be the grammar cop, but I’m really getting sick and tired of seeing people use that word wrong.

  • Anonymous

$8 is more reasonable, I just have to decide if the plus content is worth it as I have playOn running on my PS3 and already have full Hulu access.

    • Brad

I’m considering going that route as well, and dumping my satellite service. The thing to keep in mind is that regular Hulu has no HD content, whereas Hulu Plus does.

    • Goodman

I tried PlayOn on my iPad and Roku & was pretty disappointed. Glad they had a free trial period.

      • Anonymous

Well, its only $30 first year and $20 every year after… the free hulu makes it worth it to me. Plus it has a lot of other channels and music.

  • Booboolala2000

And still not available on Google TV. Very stupid.

  • BestBuyKnowItAll

Still to expensive for TV shows. Just DVR them lazy asses! $7.99 for TV shows that were just on last week? Who pays for satellite TV, then pays $7.99 a month on top of that to watch same shows just aired? DUMB!

    • Goodman

Yeah, but they have other shows as well, and I can easily watch them on my IPad and iPhone too. I can even start on one device and resume on another.

    • Anonymous

Dumb is keeping satellite. Read my posts above, I’m saving a ton for the same content.

  • larry91403

Maybe I’d consider it if they stopped being such dicks about HOW I can watch hulu! Maybe I want to watch hulu from my boxee hacked AppleTV – why is that their business? They want me to pay, they are gonna have to let me play.

  • Visual Mofo

Maybe I’ll consider if they drop the price to, $5. And NO ADS!

  • Jamullian

$5 and Google TV then I’ll bite.

  • Griggs

$5 with ads maybe $8 without ads maybe. The way it is now…NOPE

Does BGR know they can’t use dollar signs in their headlines or the right nav drops words?
