AT&T: 80% of network now ugraded to HSPA+; data growth slowed in Q3

General

AT&T might not call its HSPA+ network “4G” like T-Mobile does, but trust us when we tell you… AT&T’s enhanced 3G network can move. The screen shot above, taken just outside New York city on Wednesday afternoon, shows an iPhone 4 enjoying download speeds of 5Mbps on AT&T’s HSPA+ network. According to AT&T CTO John Donovan, 80% of AT&T’s network is now covered by HSPA+, though he did not elaborate on average speeds are experienced in various regions. Donovan also discussed the growth rate of data traffic on the carrier’s network, which is up 3,000% over the past three years — from approximately 1 billion MB in Q3 2007 to a staggering 30.3 billion MB in Q3 2010. Growth has slowed in recent months, from 50% growth in Q2 of this year to 30% in Q3, but the carrier isn’t expecting its data growth rate to continue decreasing. AT&T is currently preparing to launch an LTE network next year that will be even faster than its HSPA+ network, which has a theoretical downlink limit of 21Mbps. AT&T has not publicly stated firm speed expectations for its LTE network.

speeds still suck balls in NYC on my iPhone 4 …gotta love AT&T.

Only about 20% of the country has AT&T 3G.
So only about 16% has this new high-speed.
And only the few people with the NEWEST cell phones can use it anyway.

Great. Why not actually get AT&T working… and widespread… BEFORE trying to increase speeds?

A network that you can reach… doesn’t do any good… at any speed.

Look at that. In East Harlem NYC, I just did a Xtreme Speedtest on my iPhone 4. Got 5,029KB on the down and 405kb on the Up. With all the geeks in midtown clogging up the network…Looks like the good speed is in Upper Manhattan :D

If you want a reason for a slowdown in data traffic growth, just look at their exorbitantly costly data plans.

Who cares about this BS of hspa+ being faster than everyone when yesterday I was at the steeler game in pittsburgh and the couple behind me one with an iphone 3GS and another att phone I didn’t recognize could not even get a signal to do anything. Are you kidding me I will stick with verizon. I asked them if they wanted to use the hotspot on my droid so they could get online. LMAO
