Eric Schmidt handles Nexus S on video

mobile

Seeing an image or two is one thing, but there’s nothing like seeing an unannounced, highly anticipated smartphone star in a crystal clear video — especially when the CEO of the company behind the phone is the one showing it off. Eric Schmidt decided to bring a shiny new Samsung-built Nexus S on stage with him at the Web 2.0 summit yesterday, and O’Reilly Media managed to capture the whole affair on film. The unreleased Gingerbread phone is looking awfully sexy, though plasticky, as Schmidt fondles it while discussing NFC. Hit the jump for the video and get ready for a formal unveiling Google’s Nexus S, which will take place in the next few weeks.

It took forever to load. I think the phone looks too rounded.

    • Anonymous

I think most of the loading times were in part to a shoddy network connection, but that’s T-Mobile for you!

      • Neoprimal

At least it loads, which would take a lot longer on any of the other networks (or not at all on ATT).

      • Scott

Funny, loaded up and started playing in about 15 seconds on my iPhone 3G. No hiccups or stops either. maybe I’m on 4G? haha

      • Neoprimal

His map was loaded completely. As far as the cellular network goes, all it’s really responsible for is downloading the map/satellite image/traffic data etc. the rest is up to either a wifi network (which he wasn’t on) or the GPS (which was what seemed to be blinking). Now – we all know the story about the Galaxy S and their notoriously slow GPS lock….so, yeah that wasn’t the greatest example there, but he’s probably testing the phone himself so he just used it as a quick example (and gave the blogs some fodder for hype).

How is this phone a “highly anticipated smartphone” when the last one was cancelled because it was a failure?

    • Kyle4miller

The last one was hardly a “failure” …. it was an excellent phone with great specs and great looking hardware to boot. The reason it didn’t have groundbreaking sales is because of the WAY google sold the phone. Instead of putting it in t-mo/at&t/etc stores around the country where it was visible to the general public they sold it online. And, honestly, I don’t think MOST of the general public really understands the idea of buying a phone outside of contract just yet. They’re too used to the old paradigm of two year carrier-bound contracts and price subsidies.

The Nexus One is still MORE than comparable performance/hardware wise to most of the top android phones out there today. It pretty much set the 1ghz processor as the smartphone industry standard.

Obviously you must be a Jobs nuthugger. The Nexus One IMO is the best looking, feeling and more able then any other device currently made barring any OS. Even today when any app or any android product is advertised it still uses the Nexus One as their flag ship device, wonder why? I still use my Nexus One on a daily basis and I have tried all devices, none can stand up to the Nexus One including the I-Phone.
      PS.
The Nexus One was not cancelled, still sold in very large quantities in Asia. The Nexus One is called The Developers Device for a very good reason. As far as not selling large quantities in this country is very simple, the Carriers do not want to sell an unlocked device without all their network bloatware. That is very easy to figure out. Not everyone has $550.00 to shell out for a device, they would rather go to a carrier who is pushing out bloated devices for $200.00 that are locked down and filled with network garbage. My Nexus One rooted and running fast as lightning will be top dog for a while yet, at least until we start seeing some of these newer big powered devices.

the suspense is killing me! good conversations in this video though.

  • Booboolala2000

Good show TMO, searching for signal…hilarious. I only hope that a nexus variant comes to VZW. I would so jump on it.
And as to those that thought the first Nexus was a fail, the phone wasn’t, the one carrier and distribution part was. The phone itself is still awesome.

It wasn’t searching for a signal, if it was it would have SEARCHING in place of the T-Mobile network ID. HILARIOUS. It was also on WiFi for those of you that can’t tell by the missing data network icon and WiFi signal bars.

  • The Android Guru

The phone looks great & I cant wait to purchase it. The only people who hate on the Nexus One are people who never owned it. It set the bar for every other phone to follow & this one will too!

    • Anonymous

      i agree

    • Anonymous

The nexus one is great. Wish I could’ve owned one. But, Sprint declined : ( But, I got an EVO : ) However, the nexus s will not set the bar for anything. Iti s Samsung. Samsung=bad build quality and lack of timely updates. The Galaxy S phones came with 2.1. Not only have they not gotten Froyo, but Samsung has yet to even give a clue when they will. Gingerbread? Ha, forget that! Sorry, just don’t trust Samsung. That thing looked so shiny and plasticy. Ewww.

    Tmobile = dealbreaker

    • zps

      why?

      • Anonymous

Have you looked at their coverage map? They barely have any 3G, now they are trying to march to the 4G drum.

      • zps

t-mobile is far superior to AT&T in los angeles, and i have used both services for years.

  • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

Is there ANYONE in this world better than Eric Schmidt??? Really! C’mon! He never says wrong things, he leads the perfect company. No wonder I and all the other Goofans (aka Apple Haters) love giving him ALL our information without a single ounce of remorse! I am telling you, if Google is Skynet, then I am loving Skynet and firmly believing that Terminator was made up by Apple years ago to make people hate Google, even before Larry and Sergei thought of the company… You know that’s true. The evil Apple empire if, quite indeed, the devil’s temple!

    • Anonymous

Goofan where the heck you been? We’ve only had norm’s silly behavior to make fun of over the last few days.

      • Anonymous

You have some balls making fun of anybody’s silly behavior, after your misinformed rants about Flash & Android as if late. Damn, that was a long sentence!

      • Anonymous

Hey tim242 good to see you again. Here take your pitcher of Google cool aid back. You forgot it when you ran away after I brow beat you on a previous thread.

  • Anonymous

I’d love to get one of these, but… we’re not all on T-Mobile. I guess Verizon and Sprint categorically refused to allow an unmolested version of Android to be featured on any of their phones? I would have included AT&T in this discussion, but with their rejection of sideloading, it’s clear that they’re not serious about coming to this party.

Besides, as definitive as that Gingerbread experience might be… I want a QWERTY keyboard. Apparently, this makes me some kind of freak. So I’ll just stick to my D2 and get around to rooting it for an optimal experience.

Nice to know the “real” Google experience is coming back again, though. It’s always good to have a benchmark against which other phones can be measured in a relatively objective fashion.

    • MyPhoneCaptivates

      you freak.

  • Joe D.

Buyers Guide is an excellent tool for you gals to provide, spesh since you to such an wickedawesome job of detailing products!

I notice the ridiculously priced Klipsh ear buds are on there but consider the Bose IE2, sounds great and with their “ear holder” they are staying put no matter what the activity.!

And yes I would like an Nexus S :D
